Chapter 19 Red Star Production Brigade

He Gang saw that Bai Guoguo had bought enough things and the other three educated youth seemed to have finished their shopping as well, so he gathered them together and prepared to go back.

He Gang put all the things that Bai Guoguo had bought before, as well as the shovel and some bowls and chopsticks that he bought later, into the big pot, ready to carry them all away by himself.

Bai Guoguo naturally couldn't be so tactless as to let the other person take all the responsibility, and the two of them had a tug of war.

Finally, He Gang symbolically stuffed a few bags of snacks into her hands and asked her to carry them.

He put all the other things into the pot, picked them up at once, and walked out with big strides.

Bai Guoguo had no choice but to stamp her feet and then followed. The other three people who had been invisible beside them looked at each other helplessly, and followed with their bags in their hands.

He Gang, who is about 1.9 meters tall and has long legs, walked in front easily, looking after a large pot of food without any effort.

Bai Guoguo, who was only carrying a few bags of snacks, had to jog hard to keep up with him.

Not to mention the three people behind who were carrying large and small bags of things. When they arrived in front of the tractor, all three of them were sweating and out of breath.

"Hey, why did Brother Gangzi buy so many things?"

He Hongjun saw his brother Gangzi carrying a big pot with the food in the pot sticking out like a small mountain. He quickly jumped out of the car, walked over quickly and offered his hand to help carry the pot.

"These aren't mine. They belong to Xiaobai, an educated youth. She's planning to rent a single room in our brigade's educated youth center, so she bought some extra stuff."

With the help of He Hongjun, He Gang placed the big pot steadily in the tractor bed.

He turned around, took the several bags of snacks from Bai Guoguo's hand and put them into the pot. He lifted the tractor seat and took out two large snakeskin bags from underneath to cover it.

In this way, outsiders can only see the bag on the pot and have no idea what is inside. It is very thoughtful.

The other three people did not have such treatment. They could only move their things into the truck bed with great effort and then climb into the truck and sit down silently.

They were numb to the different treatment that the team leader named He had shown to Bai Guoguo along the way, and they didn't even have the mood to argue.

"Brother He, thank you so much. Without your help, I wouldn't be able to carry so many things. And the same goes for Comrade He Hongjun. When I get settled in our brigade, I'll invite you all to have a hot pot meal."

Bai Guoguo climbed into the car and sat down where he had placed his package, then said to the two of them with a smile.

"Oh, that's great! I can tell my sister cooks delicious food! I'm really benefiting from Gangzi's brother!"

He Hongjun touched the Lei Feng cap on his head and laughed with his teeth bared.

"Don't be polite, sister. But I'm still looking forward to seeing your cooking skills. Sit tight, I'll be driving soon."

He Gang slapped his good brother aside and thought to himself, what are you laughing at? If anyone should be laughing at this girl, I should be the one.

"Hey, thank you for your hard work, Brother He!"

Bai Guoguo agreed crisply, so He Gang smiled and took the handlebars, turned around and started the tractor.

The big tractor was spewing black smoke all the way, carrying several people, and drove towards the dirt road in the countryside.

After more than an hour of bumpy ride, the tractor finally drove into a large village with about 200 households.

Along the way, people kept greeting He Gang, and some children heard the sound of the tractor and ran after it laughing all the way to the earth dam in the center of the village.

This dam is about the size of two basketball courts. The ground is compacted tightly and flat. It should be a place used to dry grain in rural areas.

There is also a large thatched shed beside the dam, which contains a huge stone mill and several large stone rollers.

I think this should be the place used to grind grain, and those millstones should be used to grind millet.

I had seen Bai Guoguo in some rural areas when he was shooting materials as an internet celebrity in the 21st century.

I heard from local old farmers that these dams are used for irrigation and are flattened by hand using large stone rollers.

Every year when we dry the crops, we use a roller to press them down beforehand, so there is basically no weed growth. It has been used for decades and the ground is still flat.

Those huge ten-mill rollers can be used to grind and shell millet, as well as to grind the drying yard. They can also be used to grind the foundation and yard of a new house.

If Bai Guoguo had not been to the rural areas in the north in his previous life, he would not know the uses of these things. Look, the three educated youth next to him are very curious about these things.

There is a row of newly built red brick houses on the edge of the dam, and next to the brick houses there are several short, dilapidated and old houses.

There was a white sign next to the door of a red brick house with the words "Red Star Production Brigade Office" written on it in black brush.

Some of the houses next door were labeled "Red Star Production Brigade Accounting Office," some were labeled "Red Star Production Brigade Health Center," and two were labeled "Warehouse."

Bai Guoguo remembered that He Hongjun had said before that He Gang took the lead in building a brick kiln in the brigade and built a new office for the brigade.

This should be it. The adobe houses next to it should be the old offices.

When the people in the house heard the sound of the tractor, they all came out. A man in his fifties, several middle-aged people in their thirties and forties, and three female cadres came to greet them.

When He Gang and He Hongjun saw everyone coming, they jumped out of the car swiftly, greeted He Gang's uncle, Captain He, first, and nodded to other village cadres.

"Gangzi, Hongjun, you've all been picked up, right? The educated youth have all worked hard. Welcome everyone to our Red Star Production Brigade. Come, come, come to our brigade. We've prepared a welcoming banquet for you at the brigade leader's house."

A square-faced middle-aged man in his thirties or forties greeted everyone with a hearty laugh. An old man in his 50s, walking in front, was holding a pipe and smiling and nodding. This man should be the team leader.

"I'm Old Li, our brigade's accountant. This is Captain He. This is Team One's captain, He Long. This is Team Two's captain, Li Dashu. You all know Team Three's captain, He Gang. This is the women's director, Sister Huang Hongying. The other two are Doctor He and Nurse Yang from our clinic."

Old Li, the accountant of the Red Star Brigade, seemed to be a very eloquent person. He gave a long introduction to the educated youth.

Bai Guoguo and the other three quickly jumped off the tractor and greeted everyone one by one.

After everyone exchanged greetings, the team leader considerately sent them to the educated youth site first, and asked them to come back for dinner after they were settled.

Others go to work when they should, and go to work when they should.

So He Gang drove the tractor again and took them to a large yard in the village very close to the foot of the mountain.

That was the Red Star Brigade’s educated youth center, and it was where they would live for the next few years!
