Chapter 30: Collecting Firewood and Digging Wild Vegetables

After returning to the educated youth site, Bai Guoguo opened the door, took a backpack, a kitchen knife, and a rope, and went out.

Since I haven't found an excuse to go to town alone, there is no reason to use the machetes and axes in the space.

Even the rope in his hand was the straw rope that Uncle Zhao used to make when he was moving the furniture yesterday.

Because the conditions do not allow it, I can only make do with it for the time being. But later when there is no one in the mountains, I can take it out and use it secretly.

The educated youth compound is located at the foot of the mountain, so it is more convenient for them to go up the mountain than for the villagers in the village.

Bai Guoguo went up the mountain along the path that had been trampled by people in the past. She tied her trouser legs tightly with straw ropes to prevent snakes and insects from crawling in.

Holding a wooden stick picked up from the foot of the mountain, Bai Guoguo sharpened one end of the stick with a kitchen knife and used it to knock on the grass to explore the way and protect himself.

Maybe it was time to go to work, I didn’t see any adults along the way, only children in groups of three or four picking up branches and digging wild vegetables.

When these children saw Bai Guoguo, they were curious but didn't dare to get close. They just whispered to each other from a distance.

It was very cold and the children were all wearing patched cotton jackets, but they looked quite thick so they shouldn't be cold.

It may also be that they have to go up the mountain to work, which will wear out their clothes, so the adults in the family let the children go out wearing worn-out clothes.

"Hello, children. I'm the new educated youth in our team. My last name is Bai. This is my first time in the mountains and I don't know the way. Is there any child who can show me the way? I can give you candy as a reward."

Bai Guoguo took advantage of the cover of his trouser pocket and grabbed a handful of colorful fruit candies from the space.

Seeing that some children were moving strangely around Candy, they were about to step forward, but were stopped by a chubby little boy of seven or eight years old.

"We don't know you, so we can't eat your candy. What if you're a bad guy?"

After hearing what the little boy said, the children who were ready to move just now were suddenly frightened and took several steps back.

One timid girl was even on the verge of tears.

"It's good for children to be vigilant, but I'm not a bad person. I was picked up yesterday by Captain He Gang from the third squad of your production team."

Bai Guoguo liked the clever little boy from the bottom of her heart, but she was afraid of scaring the two timid girls, so she had to explain to them patiently.

"Oh, so it turns out that these are the educated youths my second uncle brought back. That's all right, everyone, don't be afraid!"

The chubby little boy raised his round head and put his hands on his hips, saying with relief like a little adult.

That little look was even cuter, making Bai Guoguo smile: "Oh, then we are really destined to meet. It turns out that Captain He Gang is your uncle. He helped me a lot yesterday. Come on, sister will treat you to some candy. The orange candy is delicious!"

"Okay then, thank you, sister. But we won't eat your candy for free. We'll show you the way. We know exactly where to find firewood and wild vegetables in this mountain."

The little boy tilted his head and thought, since they were people his uncle knew, it should be okay for this sister to treat them to candy.

Moreover, they were helping others by eating their candy, so it didn't seem like they were taking advantage of them in vain. So they waved and asked their friends behind them to come over.

Bai Guoguo looked at the scene in front of him and became more interested in the little boy. This little guy was amazing.

When he is with children who are one or two years older than him, they all seem to assume that he is the boss and listen to him.

"Come on, give each of you one. There aren't many candies, but we'll all have something sweet to eat. If you're lucky enough to catch a pheasant or rabbit later, I'll treat you to some meat."

Bai Guoguo smiled and distributed candies to the little ones. There were five children in total, three boys and two girls.

The boy was a little braver, so he tore the candy open and put it in his mouth. The two girls, about eight or nine years old, took the candy timidly and said thank you in a low voice.

Then he opened the candy, licked it, wrapped it in candy paper and carefully put it in his pocket. Bai Guoguo felt sad when he saw it, so he said that he would treat them to meat if he hunted wild game.

"Sister Bai, you don't know, pheasants and hares are so sharp and run so fast that it's impossible to catch them. Unless you're as skilled as my grandmother, who can pierce them with a dart, I don't think you'll be able to catch them today!"

The little boy in the lead held a candy in his mouth, shook his little head happily, and spoke like a little adult.

"Oh, your grandmother is an expert, really amazing. Do you know how to throw darts?"

When Bai Guoguo heard what the little boy said, he immediately became interested. He didn't expect that there really were masters in the mountains of Northeast China.

"That's right~, my great-grandmother is really good, she even beat up the Japanese devils. But my great-grandfather, grandfather, father and second uncle are also good, they have all beaten up bad guys. When I grow up, I want to be a member of the People's Liberation Army, beep beep beep and beat up the bad guys!"

When the little boy heard someone praising him for being so cute, he was so happy that he made a lot of gestures and said a lot of things.

The children nearby were also grinning from ear to ear, arguing with each other about how powerful someone in their family was. For a moment, the forest at the foot of the mountain was filled with the joyful laughter of children.

After eating Bai Guoguo's candy and chatting with her, the children are now much closer to her.

Several children led Bai Guoguo for a walk in the woods not far from the foot of the mountain, enthusiastically sharing their experiences in picking wild vegetables and fruits along the way.

Bai Guoguo also knew the names of several children. Well, the chubby little boy was 8 years old. He was the son of He Gang, named He Hu, and his nickname was Hu Zi.
