Chapter 64 Parents are here! "They've all been officially hired, what else could they be but sons-in-law..."
Before boarding the train in the provincial capital, Chen Mian's parents called her again to let her know their arrival time.
The next day, a small pimple appeared on the corner of her mouth and didn't go away for several days.
On the phone, Chen's parents were trying their best to hide it, but after all, it was the first time the two of them had traveled far from home, and Chen Mian could still sense their tension and unease between the lines.
If it weren't for the fact that they were so far away, Chen Mian would have liked to go back and pick them up.
She wished there were faster modes of transportation.
So she comforted herself while decorating her new home.
She secretly set aside a small portion of the money she earned from starting the farm to buy supplies. The loan hadn't been approved yet, so she had to be careful with her spending.
The gap in the courtyard wall has been repaired, and the dilapidated wooden door has been completely renovated.
There were two rooms in total. The slightly larger one also served as a living room. Apart from that, there was only a shack with a mud stove inside.
The yard was quite large. After Ji Yu finished painting the wooden door, she suggested, "How about I build you another room in the next few days? It's too small now, and your family can't fit in it all."
Chen Mian hung the washed sheets and duvet cover on the clothesline. "No need, this will last for a few months. I'm not some rich lady, I don't care about those things."
She turned around and beckoned Ji Yu to come out and air the blankets too. The sun was warm today, and she even wanted to sunbathe herself.
She placed the potted plant that Ji Yu had given her in the living room and took meticulous care of it every day. The patterned tablecloth on the dining table was a gift from Dilidar.
She is six months pregnant, and her belly is already showing.
He seemed to be in good spirits, though it would have been even better if he hadn't started rambling on about family matters the moment he saw Chen Mian.
Having not seen each other for a long time, Dilidar was very resentful: "I've already told him I'm in good health, but he and my mother just won't let me go out. I'm about to suffocate."
"If Mom hadn't let it slip, I wouldn't have known you were back." She frowned, her cheeks puffed out in anger. She had gained a little weight since becoming pregnant, and her round cheeks were quite adorable.
Chen Mian couldn't resist and gently pinched it.
Dilidar got even angrier. "Kapok, are you going to bully me too?"
Chen Mian blinked innocently, "I didn't, I just think you're cute."
"Then I'll pinch your cheeks too."
"Here, for you." She leaned closer and offered the pregnant woman her equally pinchable cheek.
The pregnant woman is the most important, she thought.
"I want to eat walnuts; I need to give my son some extra nutrition."
During her second trimester, Delidar was inevitably a little paranoid. She leaned back on the sofa, eating walnuts.
Suddenly, she glanced mysteriously outside the door. Her husband, Batur, was repairing the courtyard wall with Ji Yu. "I think Batur is having an affair."
“He hasn’t been hugging me in bed lately,” Delidar said in a muffled voice, sniffing. “He must be seeing someone else.”
“I can smell other women’s fragrances,” she said, her voice growing increasingly distressed, on the verge of tears.
Chen Mian was still clueless. "?" She put down the half-peeled walnut in her hand and reassured her, "No, Batur is a very good person. He wouldn't let you down."
"You're probably just bored at home alone, that's why you're overthinking things."
“No, he…” Dilidar bit her lip and swallowed the words back before she could finish. “Never mind, it’s alright.”
How could she tell Chen Mian that her husband had a very strong libido and needed her help to relieve it almost every day in various ways?
In the last two weeks, however, the frequency of his visits has suddenly decreased, and he has even refused when she brings it up herself.
She and Batur grew up together; he wasn't the type to keep his feelings to himself.
The last time I saw him acting this strangely was back in high school when a senior confessed her feelings to him.
The senior student was very enthusiastic, lively and cheerful. Even after her confession failed, she still grabbed him and kissed him before running away.
Afterwards, Batur looked at her with the exact same expression as now, his face full of guilt and bewilderment.
Hopefully, she guessed wrong this time.
Dilidar patted her round belly and resumed chatting with her friend about everyday life.
"When are you going to come to my house to play? I'm afraid they won't let me go out again after I go home this time."
Chen Mian thought about her schedule for a moment, "I probably won't have much time lately. My parents are arriving tomorrow, and I need to pick them up. I also need to buy a lot of things, and the farmland outside is still lying fallow." She comforted her, "Time flies, just hang in there a little longer, and you'll be free."
A gentle breeze swept by, and the forsythia on the table swayed gracefully. Spring is the perfect time for sowing, and she couldn't miss it.
Dilidar asked curiously, "With so much land, have you decided what to plant? How about planting walnuts with our family? My dad can teach you if you don't know how."
Chen Mian shook her head. "I'm planning to grow peaches. I've also considered walnuts, but their growth cycle is too long, and I don't have that much time and money to spend."
However, I'm not planting all 200 acres on peaches; I also need to grow other things, as well as enough food for my family.
She continued peeling walnuts. "By the way, we still need to build a house. The yard we have now is rented, it's too small, and it's quite a distance from the farm. It would be best to build a yard on our own farm."
Chen Mian had been calculating the accounts for several days, and her head was spinning even more.
She took out the colorful notebook and showed it to Dilidar. Then, with a "humph," she collapsed onto the sofa.
Chen Mian: "I'll wait for my parents to arrive and let them help me make a decision."
"I don't know how to repair houses, it's too much trouble. Why can't repairing a house be as simple as cooking?"
Dilidar frowned. "Cooking is difficult too." She couldn't do it.
.
The next morning, while the sky was still overcast, Chen Mianmian was already up.
She cleaned the yard again. Then, slung her small shoulder bag over her shoulder, ready to head to the train station.
Ji Yu drove him there, saying, "Now that I'm your son-in-law, I have to go with you to pick up your parents."
Chen Mian was speechless. "If I remember correctly, he just got promoted. How come he's already acting like a son-in-law?"
Ji Yu's eyes darted away as he argued, "I've already been officially recognized, what else could I be but a son-in-law?" He couldn't wait to marry his sweetheart the very next second.
However, the person who was still being sarcastic on the way became a completely different person when he met Chen Mian's parents, acting honest and unassuming.
"Hello, uncles and aunts, I am Chen Mubai's comrade-in-arms, my name is Ji Yu."
Looking at the tall figure before her, Chen's mother maintained a gentle smile: "Oh, I know you. Mianmian mentioned that she's been very fortunate to have you taking care of her here."
Ji Yu picked up Chen's parents' luggage and walked towards the car.
Chen Mian, with one arm around her mother, turned her head slightly and said silently, "Wasn't he just a son-in-law? How come he's an ally now?"
Ji Yu smiled wryly, raised her hand to her lips, made a zipping motion, and put her index finger up. "Shh." Let's save him some face.
He wasn't ready; he was too nervous to say anything.
Besides, discussing this kind of thing at the train station is too hasty. Let's wait and see; there's no rush.
The military green jeep started moving. The four of them first went to Chen Mian's farm. The farm didn't have a name yet; they hadn't decided on one.
Chen Mian said that she did not intentionally avoid work, but such a big matter as naming a child should be decided together with her parents when they come.
However, her father was very good at naming children and would often help other people in the village name their children.
The names of the three siblings were all chosen by their father.
Beside the farm, Mr. Chen stared in astonishment at the boundless land. His family originally owned only a dozen or so acres of land in the village, and he never imagined that they would have so much land in their lifetime.
As Ji Yu drove, she introduced the surroundings, and also casually added, "Uncle and Aunt, your daughter is really capable; she has already tidied up the yard."
"My parents were originally going to come pick you up today, but they were worried there wouldn't be enough room in the car, so they're waiting for you at home. Dinner should be ready by now."
Chen's mother was somewhat flattered. She quietly asked her daughter, "Mianmian, isn't this a bit too much of a bother for them? This is too polite."
Chen Mian didn't know how to explain: "It's nothing, they're just Northeasterners, that's how they're polite." Her eyes darted around, and she quickly came up with a reason.
Ji Yu, with her sharp ears, had already heard it. "That's right, Auntie. Everyone in our area is so hospitable. You and Uncle have already come all this way, it would be so awkward if we didn't treat you to a meal, wouldn't it?"
Chen Mian sat in the back row, trying to suppress her laughter. It was clear that someone was genuinely flustered, and even their hometown dialect was coming out.
Ji Yu dropped off the two people's luggage in the courtyard on the way, and then drove back to the wolfberry farm.
Sure enough, the meal was ready.
As soon as Chen's mother entered the door, Yu Xiaoyue greeted her warmly, "In-laws, you've finally arrived! Come in and try our cooking."
Chen's mother: "?"
Whose in-laws are these? Has the eldest son found a wife?
She looked at her daughter in confusion, wondering why no one had told her when this had happened.
Ji Yu, standing behind her, quickly strode forward, nervously winking at his mother. He was truly exasperated; he had been so careful, yet his mother's words had completely broken his defenses.
Seeing her son's anxious expression, Yu Xiaoyue suddenly turned around and said, "Oh dear, look at my mouth, it just feels so familiar when I see you, so I start to babble. Don't be offended, come in and wash your hands so we can eat."
She stepped forward and took Lin Huijun's arm. "My child and your eldest son served in the army together. They were very close, like brothers."
That's why I felt so warm and welcoming when I saw you all. Please don't stand on ceremony, make yourselves at home. Just tell me what you'd like to eat or use, and I'll make sure you're well taken care of.
Ji Feng also took out his treasured liquor, intending to drink a few more glasses while there were many people around.
He raised his hand to indicate, "Sit."
