Chapter 72 I wanted to go, I was willing
She almost suspected that she had misheard. How could he think so? Was she such a petty person in his heart?
"Why should I punish you?" She just felt incredible.
"You're already punishing me," he said gloomily, "for breaking my promise to you."
Qin Tian was going crazy. Had he always been this sensitive? Or had he eaten some shavings for lunch? She'd come to say goodbye, not wanting to just walk away and cause him to misunderstand, but now, the misunderstanding had gotten worse. It had to be her fault, her poor communication skills. She pondered for a moment, wanting to tell him everything he didn't know. This was the most sincere explanation she could offer him.
"Yes, at first I really wanted you to go with me. Because you're smart, perceptive, and you're calm in the face of adversity. I need you, and I'm afraid I can't do it without you. My dad has been looking for her for so many years and hasn't found her. I don't believe I can find her. But I understand your situation, and I don't blame you at all. I'm too dependent on you. I went through this alone before you came. I figured it out. If I can't find her once, I'll look for her twice, ten times. So, I'm not punishing you. I just want to do what I want to do and what I can do."
She said she needed him, she said she depended on him. He wasn't her second best option, at least not in this matter. But what did it matter now? He and she were destined to have no future. He had no way out. He couldn't, couldn't get close to her again. He had finally managed to pull himself away from her; if he tried again, he wouldn't stand a chance.
She saw him, immersed in darkness, speechless. What else could she do? How could they say goodbye as friends? She let out a long sigh, trying to comfort him.
"Don't be angry... I don't want to say goodbye to you in this atmosphere."
He didn't want to either. This wasn't the night to say goodbye. He'd expected that goodbye to happen in three weeks.
"If you don't want to say goodbye in this atmosphere, then don't go. Refund your ticket." He practically begged, making a final struggle. Just stay, work and live peacefully, wait for Tang Zhixu to return, wait for him to restore the artifacts, and say goodbye like friends. In just two or three weeks, no, just two weeks, all this would be over.
She didn't understand, she was full of grievances, she slowly shook her head and firmly refused.
"I'm going. I did nothing wrong. I'm not punishing you. You're just overthinking it."
He closed his eyes in despair. He turned his head back and covered his face.
He's finished.
The room was completely silent. Was she really in the wrong? Otherwise, why was he so upset? She didn't know whether she should leave or say something.
After an unknown amount of time, he reached out and said, "Give me your phone."
She hesitated, fearing that he would simply refund her ticket.
He knew what she was thinking: "I won't refund your ticket. Give it to me."
He took her phone, entered the password, looked at the text message, and gave it back to her.
He picked up his phone from the table and tapped a few times. He said calmly, "I'll pick you up at your door at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Are you going to take me to the airport? I can go by myself." She was stunned. Did he think the atmosphere today was too bad and wanted to say goodbye at the airport tomorrow?
He glanced at her but didn't answer. He put away the Song rabbit hair lamp and locked it. He shoved his tools into the tool box and turned off the light on the repair table. The office suddenly darkened. He walked out without looking back.
Qin Tian chased him out and shouted at his back: "Are you off work? You really don't have to send me off tomorrow."
He stopped, a few steps away from her across the corridor. His cold voice came over.
"I'm going clothes shopping now. See you tomorrow at eight."
Qin Tian thought about what he meant by buying clothes and seeing each other tomorrow, but when she actually saw his suitcase in the trunk, she knew why he was so upset yesterday.
"I don't need you to come with me," she blurted out.
Tong Zhongyuan ignored her. He held the car door and waited for her.
"Get in the car."
"I said! I don't need you to go with me!"
He took her arm and shoved her into the back seat, closed the door, and sat in the passenger seat himself.
Qin Tian felt a sour feeling in his nose. His expression and body language all showed that he despised her, yet he had no choice but to accompany her to Niya.
Did she do something wrong? She began to understand the punishment he was talking about. He was punishing her by accompanying her to Niya.
He'd expected to hear her yelling at him not to go, but once he got in the car, the backseat was completely silent, as if no one was there. His gaze couldn't help but darted to the rearview mirror. She stared blankly at the back of the seat, her eyelashes drooping. She made no sound, only crystal tears that continuously condensed on her long eyelashes and fell silently.
"Master, stop the car." He said anxiously.
"It's not a good place to park. We have to get on the elevated road."
"Next bite."
The car pulled over, he got out of the passenger seat, opened the back door, and got in. She didn't expect that he asked her to stop so that he could sit over there, and she hurriedly wiped her tears with her hands and shrank as far away from him as possible.
He didn't dare turn around to look at her. She was crying, she was crying, what should he do? He panicked at the sight of her tears, but he knew he couldn't let her cry alone in the back seat, so he sat over without a second thought. What should he do now? He had no idea what to do. What had he done? He had broken the promise first, so why was he doing this to her? The guilt he felt in the previous thirty years combined wasn't as much as what he felt in the past two months. He had no experience dealing with such emotions.
"I'm sorry." He didn't know what else to do except say sorry.
It was her willfulness that forced him to buy a plane ticket to accompany her to Niya. What did he have to feel sorry for? He clearly wanted to go home, so why did he still say sorry? Was he punishing her? She turned her head away, tears welling up in her eyes.
Tong Zhongyuan lowered his head, clasping his hands tightly until his knuckles ached. Never mind. Don't do anything. The more you do, the more mistakes you make. It'll be fine in a little while. Once we get to the airport, everything will be fine.
The car was heading towards a 270-degree diverging bend on the elevated highway. This was the driver's favorite turn, giving him a 30-second dream moment, as if he was driving an F1 car instead of a taxi. Hold on tight, and go!
A sudden centrifugal force pinned Tong Zhongyuan against the car door. He looked up, and the view outside the window tilted. The sky was a clear blue, the sun blazing. Qin Tian was sliding towards him from the left, from far away to near. Her tearful eyes, her stunned expression, gradually became clear in his pupils. It was like Sheeta in the Castle in the Sky, carrying the key to heaven, floating like a feather, landing in Pazu's world. He couldn't resist, he couldn't help himself, all his efforts were in vain. He reached out and pulled her into his arms.
"I'm sorry, I was wrong, I was wrong..." He sighed deeply in her ear.
His breath enveloped her, a blanket of warmth. A strange throbbing surged from his warm embrace, instantly engulfing her. Her heart pounded so hard she forgot how to breathe. A scorching electric current flowed from her heart, flowing through every part of her body. It was palpitations. So this was what palpitations felt like.
The car returned to the straight. The driver was very satisfied. That cornering was amazing. If he hadn't been a taxi driver, he might have been a racing driver.
Qin Tian sat back in her seat and buckled herself in. Her face burned hot. He apologized like this, so she had to show some appreciation.
She said in a low voice, "I don't blame you. I was not thoughtful enough."
He also went to pull the seat belt, fumbling twice before he found it buckled in. He didn't look at her either, he looked out the window. Today was an incomparably sunny day.
"Let's go to Niya together. I'm not angry, I want to go. I'm willing to go."
He spoke softly, as if speaking to himself.
