After the New Year, the winter vacation seemed to be sped up, and after the Lantern Festival, school would start again.
Pei Xi only found out about Jiang Cheng's change of residence the day before school started.
Pei Zhi stayed at home for almost half a month, and his injuries had mostly healed. There was still some fluid buildup in his knee, but it didn't affect his normal activities.
So the brother and sister went to the supermarket together.
There was no biting winter wind outside; it was a mild, sunny day.
When they arrived at the supermarket, Pei Zhi was in charge of pushing the shopping cart, while Pei Xi walked beside him, filling it with whatever delicious or useful items she saw.
“These strawberries are fresh. If you like them, bring two more boxes,” Pei Zhi said.
Pei Xi glanced at the shopping cart. "I've already taken two boxes."
Pei Zhi clicked his tongue and frowned, saying, "This box is only a little bit; it'll be finished in a moment. Take some more."
After saying that, he took two more boxes and put them in.
Pei Zhi has always been like this: when buying things, he'd rather buy more than he can eat, even if he can't finish them all, he can't bear not eating to his heart's content.
Pei Xi smiled silently and let him take it.
With Pei Zhi's bold and decisive shopping style, after walking through the fresh produce and snack sections, the shopping cart was almost full.
Seeing that they had almost finished buying, the two pushed the cart to the self-service payment machine to pay.
Halfway there, Pei Xi suddenly exclaimed and looked at Pei Zhi, "Brother, I forgot to get the taro sticks."
Pei Zhi waved to her, "Go on, I'll wait for you here."
Pei Xi nodded, turned around, and quickly walked back to the snack area.
She hadn't seen the taro strips before and didn't know where they were. After searching around, she finally found them on the innermost shelf.
Pei Xi looked up at the flavor labels on the packaging. Just as he picked up a bag of salted egg yolk flavored ones, he heard a familiar voice behind him: "Pei Xi?"
Pei Xi paused, turned around, and a look of surprise appeared on his face.
She hasn't seen Jiang Cheng since the last video call.
He was wearing a black windbreaker, his upper body was tall and broad, and his cargo pants made his legs look straight and long, making him look like a men's clothing model.
Before Pei Xi could react, Jiang Cheng had already pushed the cart over.
Pei Xi glanced casually at his shopping cart. It was quite empty, containing only a few household items: tissues, dish soap, toothpaste, and... a pair of pink slippers.
Pei Xi's gaze suddenly stopped.
Women's slippers.
Neither the size nor the style could possibly be something Jiang Cheng would wear himself.
"Did you come here by yourself?" Jiang Cheng asked from above her head.
Pei Xi snapped out of her daze, looked up at him, and said, "No, Pei Zhi is waiting for me at the payment machine."
After saying that, she waved the taro strips in her hand, "I forgot to take these earlier."
Jiang Cheng nodded, his gaze fixed on her face.
Having not seen her face for half a month, he couldn't help but stare at her for a while longer.
"you..."
"you..."
Two voices spoke at the same time, and Pei Xi chuckled, "You go first."
Jiang Cheng shook his head. "It's nothing. I just wanted to ask if you got a haircut."
Pei Xi was somewhat surprised, "You even noticed that?"
She had just gotten her hair trimmed a few days ago when she went shopping with Shen Miaoyi; it was a little shorter than usual. Even Pei Zhi didn't notice when she got home.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Cheng saw through it immediately.
“Your hair used to be longer than it is now,” Jiang Cheng said.
The ends of his hair, at the position of his shoulder blades. He thought to himself.
"You have a really good memory," Pei Xi exclaimed, half-jokingly adding, "No wonder Pei Zhi couldn't beat you in the exam."
Jiang Cheng curled his lips slightly but remained silent.
Pei Xi glanced at his face, her clear eyes darting around, and pointed to the slippers in his car. "Who did you buy these slippers for? They look like something a girl would wear."
Jiang Cheng was taken aback, and the smile on his lips faltered for a moment.
He had completely forgotten that there were slippers in the car.
When I saw Pei Xi, all I could think of was calling her name.
An unnatural look flashed across Jiang Cheng's face, then he silently swallowed hard.
He suddenly didn't know how to bring it up. These shoes were indeed bought for Pei Xi, just in case.
But he couldn't quite bring himself to say it; if he did, it would sound like he was deliberately inviting Pei Xi to his home.
Pei Xi noticed his predicament, deliberately lowered her eyelashes, and said in a low voice, "I understand. If it's inconvenient for you to say, then I won't ask."
Jiang Cheng immediately retorted, "No."
"It's not for anyone else." His tone was tinged with urgency as he looked down at Pei Xi.
Pei Xi suddenly smiled, blinked, and asked, "For me?"
Jiang Cheng grunted an "Mmm" in his throat.
Pei Xi paused, then suddenly realized something and asked with some surprise, "You moved?"
Jiang Cheng nodded.
A hint of joy flashed in Pei Xi's eyes. "Where did you move to?"
Jiang Cheng said the name of the residential area: "Cuihe".
"Did you rent it yourself?"
"Um."
"Congratulations, Jiang Cheng," Pei Xi said with a smile.
Jiang Cheng was taken aback, then chuckled softly, somewhat bewildered, "Congratulations on what?"
What's there to congratulate about renting an old, run-down apartment?
"You moved out of the urban village," Pei Xi said matter-of-factly. "Isn't that something to congratulate you on?"
"And most importantly, this is a house rented with your own money."
A look of surprise flashed across Jiang Cheng's face.
A strange heat suddenly flowed from my chest, bringing a tingling sensation, and in an instant, a feeling of enlightenment washed over me.
He suddenly understood why he had moved house even though he didn't actually want Pei Xi to come and find him.
He didn't move so that Pei Xi could come and visit him more easily.
It was to tell her, "Look, I've moved out of there."
Although it's only a small step, and although I still have to live in a dilapidated old apartment, I've left the urban village, and things are slowly getting better for me.
Through my own efforts.
And Pei Xi really did see it.
She saw it immediately.
Jiang Chengchui's fingers curled slightly at his side as he stared intently at Pei Xi's face.
He suddenly had a strong urge to hold her in his arms.
