Streetlights, residential buildings—all sources of light disappeared, even the moonlight was faint, and the surroundings were plunged into deathly darkness.
Pei Xi's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately took out his phone and turned on the flashlight.
This little bit of light was completely useless; she couldn't even see Pei Zhi's figure clearly, and it could only slightly illuminate a small area in front of her.
Fear of the darkness instantly overwhelmed her reason; Pei Xi's mind went blank for a moment, and she subconsciously whispered towards Pei Zhi, "Brother, come here, I'm scared..."
"Don't be afraid."
Pei Zhi's voice came through the phone, followed by footsteps. Using the light from his phone, Pei Zhi walked over to her.
"Don't be afraid." Pei Zhi put his arm around her shoulder and repeated, his voice visibly tense, "...because your brother is afraid too."
Pei Xi: "..."
She almost forgot that being afraid of the dark was a family tradition, and Pei Zhi was even more so than her.
"Then let's hurry... let's hurry home."
Before he could finish speaking, Pei Xi suddenly stopped, a chill running through him.
Footsteps could be heard outside the stadium.
She hugged Pei Zhi's arm and whispered in his ear, "Someone's coming."
Pei Zhi nodded. "I heard you."
Although it was only four words, you could tell that he was trying to appear calm.
When the sun was high in the sky, Pei Zhi was fearless, but in the darkness, all his supernatural powers were taken away.
All that remains is weakness, pitifulness, and helplessness.
The surroundings were silent. Pei Xi heard the footsteps outside seem to slow down, and then a dark figure slowly walked into the stadium.
Using the faint light from their phones, they could see that the dark figure was very tall and was constantly approaching them.
A sense of unease rose in Pei Xi's heart, but before it could escalate into fear, she heard a familiar voice: "Pei Xi?"
Pei Xi paused for a moment, then tentatively called out, "Jiang Cheng?"
"It's me," Jiang Cheng's deep voice came.
Pei Xi's pounding heart instantly returned to the ground. She held up her phone and saw Jiang Cheng walking towards them until she could see his face clearly.
She felt the muscles in Pei Zhi's arm relax as well.
"How did you know it was us?" Pei Zhi asked, looking up.
Jiang Cheng's face was hidden at the boundary between light and darkness, making his features appear even sharper and more angular, and his eyebrows and eyes even darker.
He tilted his head and said, "I saw the electric scooters parked outside."
"oh."
Jiang Cheng said, "The infrastructure around here is quite old, the power lines are aging, and power maintenance is frequently required. A power outage notice was issued yesterday."
"oh."
After Pei Zhi said that, nothing more was said.
An eerie silence suddenly fell between the three of them.
After a few seconds, Jiang Cheng asked softly, "Aren't you leaving? We can't play basketball in this situation, can we?"
Pei Zhi pursed his lips and remained silent.
Pei Xi suddenly raised his hand and grabbed Jiang Cheng's clothes.
Jiang Cheng was taken aback, lowered his eyes, and saw Pei Xi looking up at him. "Is this a safe way to go?"
Jiang Cheng saw the lingering fear in her eyes, then directly raised his hand and grabbed her wrist.
“Go this way,” he said.
The warmth from her wrist dispelled all of Pei Xi's lingering fear. Pei Xi stood up, turned to Pei Zhi, and said, "Brother, follow me."
Pei Zhi: "".
Then he stood up and grabbed Pei Xi's clothes without saying a word.
So the final formation became Jiang Cheng grabbing Pei Xi's wrist in front, and Pei Zhi pulling on Pei Xi's clothes from behind.
The three of them walked in a line, following each other closely. Jiang Cheng suddenly felt like the mother hen in the eagle catching chicks team.
She tried her best to protect her two little chicks.
He chuckled silently, then turned to Pei Xi and said softly, "Don't be afraid."
Pei Xi gave a soft "hmm".
The next second, Pei Zhi suddenly stepped on something and reflexively yelled, "Ah—"
Pei Xi was startled and shuddered.
Jiang Cheng said in a deep voice without turning his head, "Don't shout."
Pei Zhi: "..."
That was his instinctive reaction; can you blame him?
He looked down, bent over, and kicked the thing he had just stepped on away in a fit of anger.
The three of them slowly walked out of the huge stadium and to the roadside, where Jiang Cheng led them to stop in front of the electric scooter.
Pei Zhi got on the electric scooter, turned on the headlights, and the view ahead became brighter, instantly making him feel much more at ease.
“There are lights on the road ahead,” Jiang Cheng said softly.
“Okay.” Pei Xi nodded.
Jiang Cheng then looked at Pei Zhi, who was riding a small electric scooter, and asked, "Can you go back by yourself?"
With the light on, Pei Zhi spoke with more confidence, "Of course I can, who do you think I am?"
Pei Xi: "".
So it turns out that the person who was trying to hide their head in their waistband just now was someone else entirely.
Jiang Cheng frowned and said, "Don't push yourself. If it doesn't work, I can take you back."
"Who's not good enough?" Pei Zhi suddenly shouted, "I'm perfectly capable, okay!"
Jiang Cheng's face remained expressionless, or perhaps he had already gotten used to it; a helpless smile flashed in his eyes.
In all honesty, he had absolutely no intention of provoking or mocking anyone.
Does it sound that similar?
He asked again, still not entirely sure, "Are you sure you can get Pei Xi home safely?"
Pei Zhi nodded, his expression indignant. "Of course."
Jiang Cheng decided not to challenge Pei Zhi's pride any further—although he had no intention of doing so at all. He raised his brow slightly and said, "Then you guys go back. I'm going home too."
