Pei Zhi thought Pei Xi would be sad and upset.
But to his surprise, she acted as if nothing had happened, happily celebrating her birthday with them, cutting the cake, singing, and playing games together.
Shi Chen, Shen Miaoyi, and many others came to celebrate her birthday, and no one could see a trace of unhappiness on her face.
Pei Zhi suddenly realized that his worries were unnecessary.
Time flies, and in July, Pei Zhi received his admission letter from Peking University as scheduled, majoring in clinical medicine.
This summer, something even more shocking than Pei Zhi's choice to study medicine was that Shi Chen went to police academy.
Everyone assumed he would choose a major with lots of girls and a relaxed lifestyle, drift through university for a few years, have countless carefree relationships, and then go home to inherit the family business and become a spoiled brat with no great ambitions.
Unexpectedly, he ended up in a police academy where there were far more men than women.
Pei Zhi was amazed for several days.
Meanwhile, Tong Kai went to a remote key university across most of the country, while Qin Yufan, whose grades were not good, chose to repeat a year.
In the blazing summer sun, everyone has their own settling down. Some get what they want, some live a mundane life, some move forward, and some have regrets.
On the day Pei Zhi went to Peking University to register, Pei Ruoyun saw him off; Pei Xi did not go.
Because No. 1 Middle School has started.
Pei Xi has become a true senior student. The senior student that Pei Zhi once described as "different from you second-year high school students" has finally become her.
A new batch of first-year high school students arrived at the school. The row of photos of the third-year students on the honor wall was taken away by the logistics teacher and was about to be put into the warehouse. Pei Xi happened to run into them and took out two of the photos.
This is a photo that she once personally placed on the wall of honor.
Later, when Pei Xi passed by again, he would still subconsciously look up, only to find that the photos on the wall had been replaced with new ones when he looked up at empty space.
But habit is a terrible thing. When she passed the basketball court after school, she would subconsciously look inside, and then suddenly realize that Pei Zhi and Shi Chen had left, and the crisp and pleasant sound of Pei Zhi's three-pointer swishing through the net was no longer heard on the court.
Pei Xi was surprised to see a tall, honest-looking man who looked familiar. He then remembered that the man was the center forward from Pei Zhi's team.
I asked Pei Zhi and found out that he had repeated a year of high school.
Another change at the start of the new semester is that the number of people going to Grandma's dessert shop for shaved ice has decreased from four to three.
Sun Yufei joined their ice cream-eating group.
The parasols outside the dessert shop were put up again, but the people who usually sat at the table were now three girls.
It seems like a long time ago that Pei Zhi and Shi Chen, with their messy, disheveled hair after playing ball, sat on their chairs with their collars pulled up to fan themselves, attracting frequent glances and whispers from the girls buying desserts.
Pei Xi goes to and from school regularly every day, living a simple life between school, the dessert shop, and home.
But after Pei Zhi went to Jingjiang, she suddenly found that her house had become bigger and emptier.
Sometimes when Pei Xi passed by his room, he would subconsciously open the door and take a look, only to see Pei Zhi's empty and neatly made bed.
His desk still held the teaching materials he had used before. Pei Xi would sometimes feel a little dazed, thinking that Pei Zhi had gone out to play ball with Shi Chen and would probably come back with the ball for dinner just as it got dark.
Then she would laugh and feel a little confused.
Fortunately, Pei Zhi contacted her every day, and would video chat with her every night when he returned to his dorm room, without fail.
Pei Xi asked Pei Zhi if he got along well with his roommates at school, and Pei Zhi said they were pretty good. She then asked if the coursework was difficult and if he was busy, and Pei Zhi said he was a little busy, but he could manage. It was mostly just routine small talk.
Sometimes Pei Zhi would excitedly talk about many things, such as that he had met a real cadaver, but he wouldn't be able to start dissecting until next semester.
For example, when he first smelled formaldehyde, he found it strange and pungent.
For example, he joined the school basketball team and I heard that he can play in the college league in the fall, but I don't know if he can make the starting lineup.
For example, he knew all the canteens inside and out, and he knew exactly which window in which canteen had the best food. He even became familiar with the ladies serving the food.
Pei Xi listened patiently, occasionally asking a few questions, which Pei Zhi then answered in detail.
Sometimes, when there's nothing new, the two of them won't say anything. Pei Xi will bury herself in her work and quietly do her homework, while Pei Zhi won't hang up the video call and will do his own homework on the other side of his phone, just quietly keeping her company.
Pei Xi kept her head down, unaware that Pei Zhi would look up every now and then, gazing tenderly at the top of her head for a few seconds before lowering his head again.
This is the first time they've been separated for so long since they were children.
Pei Zhi recalled the few days he spent at home last autumn when Pei Xi went to Yi City to participate in a competition.
The thought that Pei Xi was just like him back then made his heart ache.
Pei Xi never told him that she was lonely at home alone, but she would occasionally say that she missed him a little.
Pei Zhi couldn't stand hearing this. Every time she said she missed him, he felt very uncomfortable, and his heart would ache.
One day, when Pei Zhi was video chatting with her in the dormitory, a few boys suddenly barged in and greeted her.
Several people called her "sister" in unison, praising her beauty. Pei Zhi frowned and chased them away like geese, kicking and punching them. The scene was noisy and chaotic, almost out of control at one point.
