Jiang Cheng: "".
“I don’t mind,” he said.
Then, very reluctantly, he pulled the lunchbox back a little.
He suddenly felt a pang of regret; he should have ordered something better.
Pei Xi picked up a little rice with his chopsticks, put it in his mouth and chewed it. Sure enough, it tasted just as bad as it looked.
She frowned and asked, "Didn't Brother Jiang say you guys made money? Why are you still eating so simply?"
"I'm not picky about food," Jiang Cheng said.
That's the truth; he really isn't picky about food.
"Then you should eat quickly. Although it tastes terrible, we can't waste it." Pei Xi said as she handed him the chopsticks in her hand.
Jiang Cheng reached out and took it.
The thought that she had just used these chopsticks made him grip them even tighter.
This is really going to be the death of me.
He took a deep breath, looked up at Pei Xi and said, "I'll finish eating soon, right away."
“I’m not in a hurry,” Pei Xi shook his head and said softly, “So you shouldn’t be in a hurry either.”
Jiang Cheng hummed in agreement.
Despite saying that, he still finished his meal in no time, eating incredibly fast.
After finishing their meal, he cleaned up the trash and went out with Pei Xi.
The two walked together toward Peking University.
Around 8 a.m., the school gate was still very lively, with students coming and going in a constant stream.
The two walked together on campus, with students riding bicycles passing by and groups of two or three boys and girls heading back to their dormitories. The summer night breeze was cool and pleasant on their faces.
Jiang Cheng suddenly felt as if everything that had happened today was a dream.
He was actually strolling with Pei Xi on the school's sidewalk.
They were only a few feet apart.
They soon arrived at the dormitory building. Pei Xi looked up at Jiang Cheng and said, "I'm here."
"Mm." Jiang Cheng nodded.
The lights were dim next to the building, and some young couples were saying goodbye to each other; they were probably upperclassmen.
Pei Xi and Jiang Cheng didn't notice that they had joined in without any sense of incongruity.
"Then I'll be going now." Pei Xi was about to take a step when Jiang Cheng suddenly called out to her, "Pei Xi."
Pei Xi paused, "Hmm?"
Jiang Chengjing paused for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Can I ask you something?"
"What's up?"
Jiang Cheng seemed to be considering his words, and after a moment of deliberation, he spoke: "You agreed to Jiang Shuyu's request, is it because...?"
He paused abruptly halfway through his sentence.
I still can't quite bring myself to ask that question.
Pei Xi's eyes lit up with a smile, and she pressed on, "Is it because of something?"
Jiang Cheng paused for a moment, then finally spoke.
"Because of me."
"yes."
Pei Xi answered immediately, the two voices falling almost simultaneously.
Jiang Cheng was stunned.
Their eyes met, and Pei Xi's gaze was honest and gentle, without any pretense.
Jiang Cheng's breath caught in his throat.
After a while, Pei Xi spoke softly: "You don't need to feel any pressure. I came here on my own initiative. Besides, we signed a contract, so we're just work partners now. You don't need to overthink it."
After saying that, she blinked again, a sly smile in her eyes as she did before, and looked up at him. "You probably didn't think too much about it, did you?"
Jiang Cheng: "".
After a moment, he hummed in agreement.
Pei Xi chuckled and waved at him, "Then I'm leaving, bye-bye."
Jiang Cheng watched her figure disappear through the dormitory door. He stood there for a while, then curled the corners of his lips into a smile.
When Pei Xi returned to his dormitory, only Zhuang Tiantian and Qi Yushu were there. One was sitting in a chair applying a face mask, and the other was reading a book on the bed.
"Where's Liangzi?" Pei Xi asked casually.
"I don't know where she ran off to, she hasn't come back yet," Zhuang Tiantian said.
Pei Xi smiled. Although they had only met briefly, she could tell that Chen Liang was also a social butterfly.
Zhuang Tiantian, her face covered by a face mask, suddenly moved closer to her. "Tell me, who did you go out with so late at night?"
“I had dinner with my brother,” Pei Xi said.
Zhuang Tiantian gave her a suspicious look.
Suddenly someone pushed the door open and came in with a familiar high-pitched voice. You could hear the voice before you saw the person. "Holy crap, ladies! I just saw a handsome guy downstairs! It was just too dark, so I couldn't see his face clearly."
Zhuang Tiantian peeled off the face mask, rolled her eyes speechlessly, and said, "Listen to what you're saying, handsome guy, I haven't even seen your face clearly yet."
Chen Liang loudly defended herself: "Being handsome is a feeling!"
Zhuang Tiantian rolled her eyes even more. "So-called feelings are just a woman's imagination."
She then turned to Pei Xi and asked, "Aren't you right?"
Pei Xi pursed his lips and remained silent.
She roughly guessed who Chen Liang had met.
Then she nodded, "...Yeah, but...actually, the one Liangzi was talking about is a really handsome guy."
"You saw it too?" Chen Liang asked in surprise.
Pei Xi nodded. "Yes, I saw it."
She could still see it clearly, she thought.
