As if in response to Pei Xi's words, the rain outside suddenly stopped and gradually began to subside as soon as he finished speaking.
Sudden rain comes quickly and always goes quickly.
Jiang Cheng looked down at her face.
Her skin was porcelain white and clean, her amber pupils were as moist as if they had been washed by rain, and her long eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings.
The rising mist carried her faint, sweet fragrance to his nose.
Jiang Cheng's Adam's apple bobbed, and he hastily looked away, nodding softly, "Okay."
As soon as he finished speaking, a noise suddenly came from the doorway, a rattling sound, as someone was pulling on the outer iron gate.
Pei Xi was startled and instinctively hid behind Jiang Cheng.
"Someone..." she whispered, "Could it be that group of people..."
Jiang Cheng slightly opened his arms to block her, shook his head and said, "It shouldn't be."
The debt collectors knew Jiang Jin wasn't home, so there was no need for them to return.
With a "whoosh," the iron gate outside was opened a crack, and a woman crouched down and sneaked in.
A cold look instantly settled on Jiang Cheng's face.
Jiang Jin looked pale and haggard, her hair disheveled, as if she hadn't slept for several days.
She walked into the courtyard, looked up and saw the two people standing at the door of the inner room. Her expression froze, and she looked at Pei Xi with shining eyes.
Jiang Cheng subconsciously turned to the side, blocking Pei Xi completely.
He looked down at Pei Xi and said, "The rain has almost stopped, you can go first. Turn left after you exit the alley, and walk straight, that's the bus stop."
Pei Xi roughly guessed that the woman in front of him was Jiang Cheng's mother who was in debt. She would only feel awkward if she was here, so he nodded and said, "Okay, I'll go now. Thank you."
As they spoke, Jiang Jin stepped forward, her eyes already filled with frost.
Pei Xi wasn't stupid; she was acutely aware of the suffocating atmosphere between the two of them, so she immediately turned and left.
Out of politeness, she looked at Jiang Jin and said, "Hello, Auntie. I just happened to be passing by, and Jiang Cheng brought me in to take shelter from the rain."
She waved her hand, "The rain has stopped, I'm leaving now."
Jiang Jin didn't respond, but just stared at her, looking her up and down.
A hint of excitement appeared on her pale face, and she uttered two "good"s in quick succession.
Pei Xi felt inexplicably unwell, hurriedly said goodbye, and quickly walked towards the door.
The moment she stepped out, she glanced back at Jiang Cheng. He remained in the same position, standing quietly by the door, his face stern.
Pei Xi withdrew his gaze and quickly ran towards the alley entrance.
Inside the courtyard, Jiang Jin looked at Jiang Cheng, her tone tinged with excitement, "What's your relationship with that girl from earlier?"
Jiang Cheng coldly replied, "We have absolutely no relationship."
Jiang Jin sneered and waved her hand dismissively, "Are you kidding me? If it were no big deal, would you have brought her home?!"
After saying that, she looked at Jiang Cheng's face and chuckled, "I knew it! It's not like I gave you a pretty face; it's not all that matters. You don't have the ability to get your rich father to acknowledge you, but you certainly attract women."
"That girl was decked out in designer brands from head to toe; she's obviously a rich girl. I don't need to teach you how to handle women, do I?"
"Remember this: the reason I kept you alive, you little bastard, was so I could enjoy a comfortable life later, understand? Otherwise, when your damned father disowns you, I'll strangle you!"
Jiang Cheng had heard these words countless times since he was a child. He was born to be a bargaining chip for Jiang Jin to hook up with a rich second-generation, but she didn't buy it at all.
Trying to control a man with a child is ridiculously foolish.
Jiang Cheng hated her when he was a child, but now that he's grown up, he only feels sorry for her.
Because of a man's words and attitude, and because her carefully planned wishes were completely thwarted, she turned into a self-destructive, hysterical madwoman.
Jiang Cheng stared at her coldly, then looked away, only to find the door wide open.
And standing outside the door was a person.
Pei Xi had returned at some point and was looking at him in shock across the courtyard, their eyes meeting.
Jiang Cheng felt a chill run down his spine, as if someone had poured a bucket of cold water on him, the coldness running from head to toe.
When did she arrive?
Jiang Cheng clenched his fist, staring intently at her, his veins bulging from the effort.
In fact, Pei Xi had only taken a few steps when he realized that he had left his drawing tools on the sofa, so he immediately turned back.
When she heard Jiang Jin speak at the door, a familiar dream instantly flashed into her mind.
The grotesque features on her beautiful face overlapped with those in her dream, and the angry, shrill voice also overlapped automatically. Pei Xi was so shocked that she covered her mouth.
She stood at the doorway, looking around the room again and again, replaying her dream in her mind.
Yes, just like in my dream.
This is the house from my dream.
Jiang Cheng's mother is the woman in his dream.
She had aged a lot, so she didn't recognize her at first, but her voice hadn't changed; it was exactly the same as in her dream.
Pei Xi's eyes instantly filled with shock.
In other words, she dreamed again of...something that actually existed...but that she had never seen before.
Just like the scar on Jiang Cheng's hand.
Pei Xi tried desperately to regulate her breathing and calm herself down. She looked at Jiang Cheng, who was looking at her, and forced a smile, not caring if it looked stiff. Then she said, "I...I forgot to take my bag."
Jiang Cheng paused, then immediately turned around, went inside to get her bag, and came out to hand it to her.
"Thanks."
