Chapter 165 Family

After the New Year's Eve party, Pei Xi also experienced a tense and exciting final exam week. After finishing the last exam, she officially started her winter vacation.

At the start of the holiday, Pei Xi and Pei Zhixian returned to Yulin City.

Jiang Cheng didn't go back with them. His studio had gotten busy again recently, and another mini-program was waiting to be launched, so he needed to stay in Jingjiang for a while longer.

He didn't fly back to Yulin until near the end of the year.

That noon, Pei Zhi drove Pei Xi to the airport to pick them up.

At the parking lot in front of the terminal, Pei Zhi parked the car, got out with Pei Xi, slammed the car door shut, and asked Pei Xi, "Has he gotten off the plane yet?"

Pei Xi nodded. "He said he just got off the plane."

"Then let's go in quickly."

"Um."

The two walked into the building side by side. During the Spring Festival travel rush, there were probably twice as many people inside as usual, and many people gathered at the exit to pick up their relatives and friends.

Everyone craned their necks, their faces beaming with anticipation.

The brother and sister found a good spot to stand, and after a while, they saw a familiar figure carrying a black bag walk out.

Jiang Cheng also immediately noticed the two people outside the fence. His expression relaxed slightly, and he quickened his pace.

Pei Xi eagerly grabbed Pei Zhi's sleeve and went to greet him.

Seeing Jiang Cheng walk out of the exit, Pei Xi immediately hugged his arm, winked sweetly, and called him by his full name: "Long time no see, Jiang Cheng."

The two hadn't seen each other for almost two weeks since the holiday started, which was indeed a long time.

Jiang Cheng smiled and unconsciously raised his hand to touch Pei Xi's face with the back of his fingers.

Pei Zhi stood to the side with his arms crossed, coughed lightly, and said, "My sister insisted on coming to pick you up, so I had no choice but to come and see her off."

The implication is that I didn't come specifically to pick you up; I'm just a driver.

Upon hearing this, Jiang Cheng smiled and raised an eyebrow, saying, "Then thank you for bringing Pei Xi over."

Pei Zhi: "..."

Did they really think of him as a driver?

Seeing Pei Zhi's discomfitured expression, Pei Xi couldn't help but chuckle.

It's all because he's always so arrogant and stubborn that he always ends up getting outmaneuvered.

To avoid another argument, she took Jiang Cheng's hand and shook it, "Let's go home quickly, my mother is still home..."

Before Pei Xi could finish speaking, Jiang Cheng's phone rang.

Jiang Cheng paused, took out his phone, and frowned slightly when he saw the number on it.

Then he answered, "Hello?"

A young female voice came from the other end of the phone: "Hello, this is a staff member from Yushi Prison. Are you a family member of Jiang Jin?"

-

Half an hour later, at the hospital entrance.

Pei Zhi stepped on the brake, glanced at Jiang Cheng in the back seat, and frowned slightly.

"You don't need to go in, I'll go by myself," Jiang Cheng said softly.

Pei Xi turned her head from the passenger seat. Jiang Cheng looked at her, chuckled, and then reached out to touch her face. "Don't worry, it should be soon."

Pei Xi gave a soft "hmm".

Then Jiang Cheng got out of the car, and Pei Zhi and Pei Xi sat in their seats, watching quietly through the car window as Jiang Cheng's figure disappeared.

Jiang Cheng walked at a moderate pace. The staff led him to the morgue, where he saw Jiang Jin's body.

It was lying in the morgue.

Covered by a white cloth, he neither went over nor lifted it to look; he just glanced at it from a distance.

Jiang Jin suffered a sudden myocardial infarction in her cell early this morning, followed by acute heart failure, which led to her sudden death.

He came here as a family member of Jiang Jin to sign the death certificate.

If an autopsy is not required, the body can be sent directly to the crematorium to await cremation.

Jiang Cheng quickly signed the document.

He remained expressionless throughout.

He quietly signed Jiang Jin's death certificate, and then quietly watched as her body was carried away by the funeral home staff.

He knew that this body would soon be pushed into a scarlet furnace and burned to ashes.

In the end, only a handful of ashes remained.

Everything from before was burned to ashes.

Then the wind blew it away, and nothing was left.

The whole process was as Jiang Cheng had said when he got out of the car—very quick and efficient.

When Jiang Cheng walked out of the hospital, Pei Zhi rolled down the car window a crack.

The slightly chilly winter air blew into the car. He watched Jiang Cheng's figure gradually approach from a distance, then glanced aimlessly at the people coming and going at the hospital entrance. As if sighing, he turned his head and asked Pei Xi, "Does he have no relatives left?"

Pei Xi nodded.

Then he shook his head.

After a moment of silence, she looked at him and said softly, "We are."

She paused for a moment, then said, "Aren't we going to take him home in a bit?"

Pei Zhi didn't speak. He looked at Jiang Cheng getting closer and closer through the windshield. Finally, just as Jiang Cheng was about to reach him, he twirled his fingers and hummed in agreement.

After all, he had already called him brother.

Well, he's a real man; he always keeps his word.
