Upon meeting his unfathomable gaze, Pei Xi felt as if he had been burned and immediately looked away.
If Pei Zhi is the kind of sunny, youthful boy who makes people feel close to him, then Jiang Cheng is the complete opposite.
He was so cold that he seemed to not welcome anyone's approach, so cold that he formed his own protective barrier.
Shi Chen's voice, tinged with amusement, suddenly rang out: "We just couldn't get everyone together. Jiang Cheng happens to be here, so I'll ask him to help out."
Pei Zhi remained silent.
But the expression on his face clearly showed his displeasure.
It was common knowledge at No. 1 Middle School that Pei Zhi and Jiang Cheng had always been at odds.
However, according to Pei Xi's observation, it was less about the two disliking each other and more about Pei Zhi's one-sided behavior.
Because Jiang Cheng wasn't targeting Pei Zhi; he treated everyone the same.
Pei Zhi's target was only Jiang Cheng.
As for the reason, Pei Xi never asked.
The common guess is that whenever Jiang Cheng is around, Pei Zhi can only ever rank second in the grade.
Therefore, she was afraid that asking would hurt Pei Zhi's self-esteem and damage their sibling relationship.
Recalling her dream, she unconsciously looked in Jiang Cheng's direction again.
The lights were dim over there, and they could only see Jiang Cheng's face turned towards them, but they couldn't make out who he was looking at.
But Pei Xi inexplicably felt that his gaze was fixed on him.
She took a deep breath and told herself it was just psychological.
A group of people walked over from a short distance away. It was the group from No. 5 Middle School. The leader, a squinty-eyed man with his hands in his pockets, looked impatient and defiant: "Pei Zhi, what are you dawdling about for so long? Are you scared?"
These words hit Pei Zhi right where it hurts. He's a straightforward person and can't stand being provoked.
Pei Zhi chuckled, "Pan Qing, you've got that backwards. It was you guys who lost to No. 1 Middle School twice, not me."
Pan Qing's face darkened, then he sneered, "Pei Zhi, don't be so smug. Don't be begging us to back down later."
Pei Zhi shrugged and raised an eyebrow, looking disdainful. "Enough talk, let's see who's the best on the court."
Pan Qing gave him a cold look and turned to find the other students from No. 5 Middle School.
Pei Zhi looked at the group of people and unconsciously clenched his fists.
Pei Zhi made some tough remarks, but in reality, he wasn't entirely confident.
I heard that a guard who retired from the youth training team transferred to No. 5 Middle School. They haven't played against each other yet, so I don't know how good he is.
However, judging from Pan Qing's arrogant attitude, he is probably not someone to be trifled with.
But the harsh words had already been spoken, the atmosphere had reached this point, and the die was cast; there was no turning back.
As for Jiang Cheng...
Who my teammates are doesn't matter anymore.
The most important thing is to bully those bastards from No. 5 Middle School.
Pei Zhi gave Shi Chen a wink, signaling that they were about to start, and while loosening his joints, he said to Pei Xi, "Just wait here, your brother will be done soon."
Pei Xi nodded, "Okay."
Pei Zhi had taken her out to play ball many times since she was a child, so she easily found a seat by the court and sat down.
A battle is about to break out.
The court was suddenly filled with the sounds of intense ball-bouncing and the friction of shoe soles.
Pei Zhi has a strong competitive spirit, especially when playing ball. Once he starts playing, all his carefree attitude disappears, and he becomes completely focused and serious.
Pei Xi had watched a lot of sports since she was a child under Pei Zhi's influence, and she could tell that the group of people from No. 5 Middle School were not incompetent; they had some skill.
But Pei Zhi's side is clearly superior.
Pei Zhi's strength goes without saying, but what's surprising is that Jiang Cheng's strength is actually on par with his.
On the court, the two surprisingly shared a strange sense of understanding.
Jiang Cheng made several brilliant passes, assisting Pei Zhi to score several points in a row.
"Pass the ball!"
"Give it to Jiang Cheng!"
Three points, awesome!
"Shi Chen, set a screen for me!"
"Be ready to retreat and defend!"
“…”
Cheers and commands filled the air as Pei Zhi fought with increasing ferocity. After several rounds, the group from No. 5 Middle School began to show signs of weakness.
Pei Zhi is undoubtedly the team's scorer; once the ball falls into his hands, his shots are almost guaranteed to make.
But Pei Xi's gaze was unconsciously drawn to Jiang Cheng.
He plays very quietly, unlike Pei Zhi who directs the entire game. He doesn't get excited after scoring, but he makes every pass decisively and is accurate and ruthless when he has an open three-pointer.
Those cold eyes seemed perpetually calm and undisturbed.
But it's clear that with him on the team, it's become more stable.
A number of spectators gradually gathered around the field.
Just as everyone was expecting Pei Zhi to press his advantage, suddenly, a wail rang out from the field: "Ah—it hurts—!!"
Everyone stopped moving. On the No. 1 Middle School side, a boy wearing glasses was lying on the ground, his body curled up, one hand covering his ankle, his expression extremely painful.
"My feet hurt so much... They... They were using tiptoeing!"
The bespectacled man was in so much pain that sweat beaded on his forehead as he glared fiercely at Pan Qing, the boy from No. 5 Middle School, with his squinty eyes.
Pei Zhi immediately understood what had happened. Seeing that he couldn't beat the bespectacled man, Pan Qing deliberately placed his foot under the man's feet as he jumped, causing the man to twist his ankle when he landed.
This is the most common dirty trick on the court.
Pei Zhi slammed the ball to the ground with a loud thud, rushed over to Pan Qing, grabbed him by the collar, and said fiercely, "You're never going to stop committing fouls, are you? If you can't play, then don't play!"
