Tong Kai rolled his eyes, too lazy to pay him any attention.
The ball bounced to the ground and was caught by Zhang Xinghua, who was standing nearby. Seeing him holding the ball, Qin Yufan reached out to him: "Hua Zi, give me the ball. Today I'm going to show this bastard what it means to look down on people!"
Zhang Xinghua looked at him, spun the ball in her hand, but didn't give it to him.
Qin Yufan was a little confused, thinking he was spacing out, so he called out to him again, "Hua Zi? What are you doing? Give me the ball."
Zhang Xinghua remained unmoved.
He just stared straight at them, his gaze lingering on the other three.
"Hua Zi, what's wrong?" Qin Yufan glanced at his face and sensed that something was off about his expression.
Pei Zhi and Tong Kai also looked over upon hearing the sound.
Meeting the gazes of the three men, Zhang Xinghua took a deep breath and spoke in a voice that was neither too loud nor too soft: "Brothers, I... have something I want to tell you."
"What's wrong?" Even the usually oblivious Qin Yufan noticed the trouble in Zhang Xinghua's eyes and asked with a frown.
Pei Zhi rested his elbows on his knees, looked at Zhang Xinghua, and lowered his gaze.
His intuition told him that it was definitely not a good thing.
Sure enough, the next second, he heard Zhang Xinghua say, "My mom is transferring me to a school in Yi City."
Upon hearing this, Qin Yufan and Tong Kai were instantly shocked. Tong Kai immediately asked, "Holy crap, when?"
Zhang Xinghua looked at him, took a deep breath, and didn't reply for a moment.
His face was etched with worry, almost overflowing with emotion.
Two seconds later, a clear, melodious voice came from the sidelines: "Tell me, when are you leaving?"
Zhang Xinghua turned to look at Pei Zhi, her eyes showing even more difficulty. After a few seconds, she finally answered, "In half a month."
As soon as he finished speaking, the air fell silent.
Two weeks later, which means he won't be able to play anymore.
Because the inter-school basketball tournament is still almost a month away.
"Damn it!" Qin Yufan was the first to erupt, cursing in disbelief, "Hua Zi, you're so unfair! You just abandoned us like that?!"
Tong Kai also found it hard to accept, after all, Zhang Xinghua was an indispensable member of their team.
No one can stand the thought of someone leaving so suddenly.
What's more, there's also the two-year brotherhood they've built up.
Tong Kai looked at Zhang Xinghua in silence, unsure whether to be angry or sad.
A look of guilt appeared in Zhang Xinghua's eyes. He knew that such a decision was a huge blow to the group of them.
Just as everyone fell into a stiff silence, Pei Zhi suddenly stood up and walked to Zhang Xinghua's side.
He raised his hand, patted his shoulder, and smiled slightly, saying, "It's okay, we'll still be brothers after you're gone."
Zhang Xinghua was somewhat surprised when she saw the smile on his lips.
He thought Pei Zhi would be angry.
After all, he knew that Pei Zhi had always taken basketball very seriously, and this was their last inter-school basketball tournament, so Pei Zhi was determined to win.
He looked at Pei Zhi and murmured, "Brother Pei...aren't you angry with me?"
Pei Zhi chuckled, "Why blame you? Transferring schools isn't something you can decide."
He hooked his arm around Zhang Xinghua's shoulder and pulled hard, pretending to threaten him, "However, if you forget about us after you leave, I won't let you off the hook."
Zhang Xinghua was somewhat moved, glancing at Qin Yufan and Tong Kai standing beside her, her eyes slightly warming.
"I'm sorry to our team," he said softly.
He deserted his post at the crucial moment, and even he felt like a bastard.
However, he argued with his mother for a long time and had several fights, but his mother refused to give in.
His mother didn't like him wasting too much time playing basketball.
Zhang Xinghua hesitated for a long time, unsure how to tell them about it.
He thought that if Pei Zhi beat him up, he would accept it and promise not to dodge at all.
But to his surprise, Pei Zhi wasn't angry with him at all.
Upon hearing his apology, Pei Zhi chuckled, pulled him closer to his chest, and said nonchalantly, "What's there to apologize for? Do you really think our team can't function without you?"
He glanced at Qin Yufan and Tong Kai beside him, and then said, "Maybe after you leave, we'll become even more invincible."
Tong Kai is smart; he can tell that Pei Zhi is helping Zhang Xinghua relieve his psychological pressure and prevent him from feeling too guilty.
So he echoed Pei Zhi's words, saying, "That's right. It's not hard to find a three-legged toad, but it's not hard to find a two-legged defender. I don't believe that there isn't someone better than you at No. 1 Middle School. Maybe after you leave, we can find someone even better than you."
"Who is stronger than Hua Zi?!" Just as the words were spoken, a wise yet unassuming voice came from the side.
Qin Yufan stared wide-eyed, her face filled with disbelief. "How could it be so easy to find? Do you think you're buying cabbages?!"
Tong Kai took a deep breath and then glared at him.
With disdain.
This is the kind of person who is all brawn and no brains.
He quickly tugged at Qin Yufan's arm and whispered in his ear, "...If you don't speak, no one will think you're mute."
Qin Yufan looked bewildered, her lips twitched a couple of times, but she obediently closed her mouth in the end.
Pei Zhi smiled and patted Zhang Xinghua's shoulder twice. "If you consider us brothers, then don't blame yourself."
He raised his hand and ruffled Zhang Xinghua's hair, then said, "Because of you, we were able to beat No. 5 Middle School for two consecutive years. You are clearly a hero, don't think of yourself as a sinner."
Tong Kai echoed, "Yes, Hua Zi, Pei Zhi is right."
