"So you left just now because you were afraid I'd find out you were injured?" Pei Xi looked into his eyes and continued to ask.
Jiang Cheng looked at her and fell silent for a moment.
Her eyes were too clear; he simply couldn't explain himself.
Noticing his silence, Pei Xi's eyes reddened again.
She was the one who asked him to play ball; if it weren't for her, Jiang Cheng wouldn't have gotten injured.
Why didn't you want me to know you were injured?
"Don't cry."
Two voices rang out at the same time, and both of them were startled.
After a few seconds of silence, Pei Xi said, "I didn't cry, my eyes are just red."
After saying that, she raised her hand and rubbed her eyes hard, then took a few deep sniffs.
Jiang Cheng watched her movements and noticed her reddened eyelids, and for a moment he was at a loss.
His hands, hanging by his sides, crumpled his clothes. This situation was so unfamiliar to him that he didn't know what to say. He could only stammer, "Don't cry."
Jiang Cheng somewhat hated his own clumsy tongue.
"You still haven't told me why you don't want me to know?" Pei Xi looked up at him, a shallow frown between her brows. "Do you think it's cool to silently endure your injuries and not let anyone know?"
Her gaze was intense, and though her words were clearly aggressive, her voice was choked with emotion.
Jiang Cheng clenched his fists, his thumb nervously rubbing the knuckles of his other fingers. He managed to utter a syllable, but then swallowed it back, like a child who had done something wrong.
After a long pause, he looked at Pei Xi and said softly, "I'm sorry."
He knew that Pei Zhi would be very happy if he helped her win the competition, and he only wanted to make her happy.
This was the only thing he could do for her within his limited abilities.
But it seems he messed it up.
So I'm sorry.
"What do you have to apologize for..." Pei Xi's heart softened immediately; she hadn't expected Jiang Cheng to apologize to her.
He's the one who got hurt, so what does he have to apologize for?
"I made you worry," Jiang Cheng said.
“Who’s worried about you…” Pei Xi rubbed her sore nose, lowered her head so that Jiang Cheng wouldn’t see her eyes, and gently tugged at his sleeve. “Come on, let’s hurry back to the clinic to find the doctor.”
Jiang Cheng nodded and obediently followed beside her as the two slowly walked back to the clinic.
The doctor looked at the scans. Pei Xi crossed her hands and clenched them tightly. Every time the doctor frowned, her hands clenched even tighter.
After a few seconds, the doctor put down the X-ray, looked up at the two of them, and said, "There's no obvious bone displacement or soft tissue damage. It's not a big problem."
Pei Xi visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
Seeing Pei Xi's anxious expression and reddened eyes, the doctor comforted her, "Young lady, don't worry too much. A broken rib isn't a big deal. It will be almost healed in a few weeks. Besides, he only broke two ribs, so the recovery will be even faster. Just rest more."
Pei Xi nodded and thanked the doctor.
She knew, of course, that a broken rib was not a fatal injury.
To doctors who encounter countless unfamiliar patients every day, this is hardly a big problem.
But she is not a doctor.
Jiang Cheng was no stranger either.
She knew he would be alright, but she also knew he was in a lot of pain.
Pei Xi was still a little worried, so she asked the doctor, "Does it need to be hospitalized for observation for a few days?"
The doctor shook his head helplessly, then smiled and said to Pei Xi, "You'll get an IV drip in a bit, then you can go home and rest."
He handed a form to Pei Xi and said, "Go give this to the nurse outside and have her take you to the nursing room for your injections later."
"Okay." Pei Xi nodded in agreement, took the form, and went out to find a nurse.
Inside the room, the male doctor watched Pei Xi's figure disappear through the door, then winked at Jiang Cheng and said, "Young man, you've got a good girlfriend. Look how much she cares about you. You'd better take good care of yourself in the future. You can't let such a pretty girl cry."
Jiang Cheng sat in the chair, his eyes darkening, and remained silent.
The male doctor glanced at Jiang Cheng's cold and indifferent face. He had long since noticed that this young man was the kind of person who was taciturn, so he didn't pay any attention to him. He just said to himself, "Treat her well. If you miss this opportunity, it will be a regret for a lifetime."
After saying that, he shook his head, seemingly moved by the scene, his tone filled with sighs and envy.
Just when he thought he would still not get a response, a soft "hmm" suddenly came from inside the room.
Jiang Cheng's gaze was deep and his voice was unusually low: "No, it won't happen."
You won't miss it.
He will try his best to be worthy of her, so he won't miss out.
