Chapter 51 Then tell me why Pei Xi was crying just now!

When Pei Zhi received the call and rushed to the hospital, Jiang Cheng's IV drip had just been started.

Pei Xi had just watched the nurse leave when he heard a familiar voice coming from the corridor, asking for directions to the infusion room.

She hurried outside and immediately saw two tall figures. She waved to them, "Brother, Brother Shi Chen, over here."

Pei Zhi looked over upon hearing the sound, then quickly ran to her side.

His chest heaved up and down, clearly indicating that he had rushed here.

"What's going on?" Pei Zhi asked, frowning.

Pei Xi briefly explained the situation to Pei Zhi.

Pei Zhi frowned deeply and muttered under his breath, "That bastard Pan Qing."

After finishing his tirade, Pei Zhi's face showed a hint of unease. He raised his hand to scratch his brow and asked Pei Xi, "...How is Jiang Cheng doing now?"

Pei Xi pointed towards the entrance of the infusion room, "They're getting an IV drip inside. The doctor said they can go home after it's finished."

Pei Zhi said "Oh," then turned his face away and stopped talking.

Pei Xi stared at him intently; she knew perfectly well what Pei Zhi was thinking.

If he truly harbored ill will towards Jiang Cheng, his first reaction upon hearing of Jiang Cheng's injury would not have been one of anxiety and anger.

The only reason they're doing this now is because they're too proud to go in and show concern.

But this opportunity might just be the perfect chance for Pei Zhi to soften his attitude towards Jiang Cheng. If that happens, then it could be a blessing in disguise.

So she looked up at Pei Zhi and said, "The doctor prescribed two boxes of painkillers. I'll go get them. You two can go in by yourselves."

After saying that, she quickly walked to the stairwell, leaving the two of them behind, and went downstairs by herself.

Before Pei Zhi could speak, he only saw her departing figure.

He stood there, hesitated for a moment, and then took a step toward the infusion room.

From the doorway, you could see Jiang Cheng sitting in a chair inside, resting with his head down, his long eyelashes obscuring his eyes, so it was unclear whether he had closed them or not.

Pei Zhi hesitated, as if something was blocking his way at the door, and suddenly found it difficult to move his legs.

The commotion at the door startled Jiang Cheng. He looked up, his face noticeably pale.

Pei Zhishen took a breath, finally stepped inside, walked to his side, and stopped in front of him. His lips moved, and as if he had made a huge decision, he asked, "...Are you alright?"

Jiang Cheng nodded and said in a low voice, "It's nothing serious, just two broken ribs."

Pei Zhi: "".

...He suspected that Jiang Cheng did it on purpose.

The calmer he appeared, the more uneasy Pei Zhi felt.

However, to the best of his ability, Jiang Cheng never thought that way.

He genuinely didn't think it was anything serious.

A hint of awkwardness flashed across Pei Zhi's face. He turned his face away and said hesitantly, "Thank you for today."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Cheng neither agreed nor disagreed, but simply nodded.

There wasn't even a "you're welcome" from them.

She accepted Pei Zhi's thanks quite naturally.

But for some reason, Pei Zhi felt inexplicably relieved when he didn't say anything impolite.

No one spoke in the room, and an eerie silence fell over it.

After a while, Pei Zhi rubbed his nose, then waved to Jiang Cheng, glanced at him, and quickly looked away. "Alright, you can rest now. I'm leaving."

After saying that, as if something was chasing her, she couldn't wait to walk out of the infusion room.

After going outside, he leaned against the wall and scratched the hair on the top of his head.

He felt inexplicably guilty, as if he owed Jiang Cheng something.

He hates owing people things, and this feeling is making him very unhappy.

Shi Chen followed and came out. When he saw Pei Zhi's appearance, a knowing look flashed in his eyes. He said calmly, "In my opinion, you don't need to take this to heart. Anyway, it wasn't for your sake."

Pei Zhi was taken aback, and suddenly realized that what Shi Chen said made some sense.

"Then what was he doing it for?" Pei Zhi raised his hand and touched his chin, feeling that something was not quite right. "Would it be worth risking a broken bone just to show off?"

That's too high a price to pay.

Shi Chen smiled, then shrugged. "There might be some reason we don't know."

As soon as he finished speaking, a mischievous thought suddenly welled up in his heart. Glancing at Pei Zhi's expression, Shi Chen curled his lips and asked, "By the way, didn't you notice that Pei Xi's eyes were very red just now, like he had been crying?"

Pei Zhi was taken aback. He had arrived in such a hurry that his mind was preoccupied with how to meet Jiang Cheng and what to say, and he hadn't paid attention for a moment.

Now that Shi Chen said that, Pei Zhi frowned and thought back for a moment. Pei Xi's eyes were indeed a little red just now, as if he had really been crying.

Pei Zhi suddenly felt the hair at the back of his head stand on end.

He wasn't the one who got hurt, so why is she crying?!

He rested his chin on his hand, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper. After a long while, he finally turned to look at Shi Chen and asked him, "Do you think Pei Xi would cry if you were the one who got hurt?"

Shi Chen: "......"

"...Probably not." He said cautiously.

"That's right!" Pei Zhi looked as if he were facing a formidable enemy, gripping Shi Chen's shoulders with both hands. "Then tell me why Pei Xi was crying just now! What reason could she have for crying!"

Shi Chen: "......"

She certainly had reason to cry.

You just don't know it.

Shi Chen sighed silently. The feeling of seeing through something but not being able to say it was actually quite painful.

He raised an eyebrow at Pei Zhi and "kindly" guessed, "Maybe she was scared. After all, this is no small matter, and it's normal for a girl to be scared."

Upon hearing this, Pei Zhi seemed to remember something, then frowned and nodded.

He suddenly remembered that two years ago, Pei Xi picked up an injured kitten by the roadside. He didn't know what had happened, but the kitten had a limp in one hind leg and kept meowing in pain.

On the way to the pet hospital, Pei Xi held it and cried with heartache.

Later, she spent a lot of money to cure the kitten and found it a good home to adopt it.

Pei Xi has always been so kind; he would cry even when he saw a kitten that was injured, let alone a human being.

Pei Zhi suddenly realized that he was seeing threats everywhere and that his concern had clouded his judgment.

The knot between his brows suddenly disappeared. Pei Zhi put his arm around Shi Chen's neck and his tone became more relaxed: "Jiang Cheng was injured because he was targeted by villains while working for the team. Pei Xi must have thought of these things, which is why she cried. She has always been very soft-hearted."

After saying that, he patted Shi Chen on the shoulder and spoke earnestly, even with a hint of comfort: "If you were the one who got hurt, Pei Xi would definitely be sad too. Don't overthink it."

Shi Chen: "............"

He really doesn't need to overthink it.

But isn't it a bit ridiculous that the person who should be thinking the most is advising him not to think too much?

Shi Chen shook his head. How come he hadn't noticed before that Pei Zhi's intelligence was so worrying?

If things continue like this, one day Jiang Chengzhen might steal his house and he won't even know it.

A hint of interest flashed in Shi Chen's eyes.

Tsk, he's actually kind of looking forward to it.
