When I got home from school, Li's mother had already prepared dinner.
As soon as Pei Xi entered the house, he smelled a wonderful aroma of food.
Li's mother brought the dishes over, and the brother and sister washed their hands and sat down at the dining table to eat, facing each other.
While eating, Pei Xi picked up some food and glanced at Pei Zhi's expression, then asked softly, "Brother, are you busy tomorrow?"
Pei Zhi paused for a moment, then replied, "Shi Chen invited me to his house to play games."
Pei Xi responded with an "Oh".
Pei Zhi looked up at her, his brow furrowing slightly. "What's wrong? Do you have something to do tomorrow?"
Pei Xi was taken aback, then shook his head and said with a smile, "No, I was just asking."
Pei Zhi gave an "oh" and continued eating with his head down.
Pei Xi didn't rush to eat. She gently bit her chopsticks and secretly observed Pei Zhi's expression, trying to find something unusual on his face.
But it didn't happen.
He remained calm and composed.
Pei Xi frowned slightly.
Given how gossipy those boys at school are, she must have heard it all, so Pei Zhi couldn't possibly have missed it.
As Pei Xi was thinking, Pei Zhi suddenly put down his bowl, the chopsticks hitting the bowl with a crisp sound. "I'm full. I'm going back to my room to play games. You can eat slowly."
After saying that, he stood up, turned around, and went upstairs.
Pei Xi watched his back. He had his hands in his pockets, and he walked with long legs and a leisurely pace. He really didn't seem any different from usual.
She furrowed her brows, looked away, and focused on eating.
After dinner, Li Ma cleaned up, and Pei Xi went upstairs as usual and took a shower.
After drying my hair, it was already getting dark outside, with only a sliver of the setting sun remaining.
Thinking of Pei Zhi, she was still a little worried. She went out and walked to Pei Zhi's room. She found that his door was ajar and there was a crack in it.
Pei Xi walked over quietly, pressed his ear to the door, and found it unusually quiet inside.
There was no sound at all.
Pei Xi was taken aback, then reached out and pushed the door open.
There was no one inside.
Pei Zhi is not inside.
"Pei Zhi?" she called out instinctively, but the corridor was empty and no one answered.
Pei Xi's heart skipped a beat for no reason, as if someone had bumped into him.
Where did Pei Zhi go?
She walked to the second-floor staircase and called out to Li Ma, who was cleaning downstairs, "Li Ma, did my brother just go out?"
Li Ma exclaimed, "No, I've been downstairs the whole time and haven't seen him. He's not in his room?"
Pei Xi shook his head. "Then I'll look again."
The Pei family's house has three floors, with several rooms on each floor. The downside of such a large house is that with so many rooms, it's easy to not even find a living person.
After searching all the way to the third floor, Pei Xi suddenly noticed that the door connecting to the terrace was slightly ajar.
She slowly walked over and, through the glass in the door, saw Pei Zhi's back.
He was wearing only a single layer of clothing, sitting motionless in the sunlight, lost in thought.
The wind outside was strong, blowing his hair into disarray at the back of his head, and his shirt clung to his back, revealing the shape of his shoulder blades.
But he seemed completely oblivious to the cold.
Pei Xi stopped in his tracks for a moment.
Because Pei Zhi's back view looked... somewhat sad.
She knew better than anyone that Pei Zhi was in a bad mood.
Don't be fooled by his talkative nature and how he wears his heart on his sleeve; when he's truly upset, he doesn't show it outwardly.
He will be completely different from usual, becoming quiet and prone to daydreaming.
When he's angry, he'll curse and throw punches, but when he's truly heartbroken, he'll just sit there silently, lost in thought.
When she was injured before, Pei Zhi would sit quietly by her bedside all night, just like that.
Pei Xi silently walked downstairs to Pei Zhi's room, took a baseball jacket, and draped it over his arm.
Then I went back upstairs.
She slowly pushed open the balcony door, walked behind Pei Zhi, and gently draped her coat over his shoulders.
Pei Zhi's shoulders twitched, then he turned to look at her, a lingering look of bewilderment still in his eyes.
Pei Xi held his shoulder, her tone slightly reproachful: "Why is my brother here alone in the wind? I've been looking for you for ages."
After saying that, she went around to the other side and sat down next to Pei Zhi.
Pei Xi leaned on the bench, observing Pei Zhi with a proud expression, "This jacket looks so handsome on my brother."
Pei Zhi couldn't help but chuckle, looking at her and asking, "Did you need something?"
Pei Xi raised his hand to straighten the coat he was wearing, and said as he did so, "I just wanted to tell my brother that he is too outstanding, so it is normal for people to be jealous of him. Don't pay any attention to it."
Pei Zhi curled his lips into a smile and raised his hand to rub the back of Pei Xi's head twice.
"Hmm, I know." Pei Zhi withdrew his hand, raising an eyebrow. "Do you need to tell me these things?"
He's not stupid; he can tell that some of their words are driven by jealousy and malice, and he won't fall into their trap.
What truly touches people's hearts is the truth.
They said he was no match for Jiang Cheng.
He will always be subordinate to Jiang Cheng.
Pei Zhi had no way to refute it.
He had always told himself that his dislike for Jiang Cheng stemmed from his inability to tolerate Jiang Cheng's arrogance.
But he knew that he was actually jealous of Jiang Cheng.
He just didn't want to admit it.
Or perhaps they dare not admit it.
Jiang Cheng seems to be better at everything than him.
