That night, Pei Xi couldn't sleep.
She lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
Jiang Cheng's image was all I could think about.
The thin, narrow wrinkles at the corners of his eyes, the gently pulsating veins on his neck, the small red mole on his collarbone, even the taut, well-defined muscles in his waist and abdomen...
Each part played in her mind like a frame of a movie.
It's all so vivid in my memory.
Pei Xi buried half her face in the blanket, feeling her face getting hot again.
She has noticed that whenever she is close to Jiang Cheng, she blushes and her heart races uncontrollably.
She was so embarrassed she wanted to run away.
But I don't dislike it.
In short, it was a very strange and unfamiliar feeling.
Under the dim light of the nightlight, Pei Xi looked up at the ceiling, gripping the blanket tightly, her palms damp with sweat.
Images of Jiang Cheng began to play repeatedly in her mind.
During summer vacation, Pei Zhi got into a fight with some students from No. 5 Middle School on the sports field. Only the two of them were left on the field. He bought her medicine without giving her a chance to refuse and helped her treat her wounds.
In the school corridor, she was helping the teacher put up photos on the honor wall. The old and dilapidated chair was wobbly, and she almost fell off. He happened to be passing by and caught her steadily.
In the Yishi Snack Street, she sat alone in an escape room shop, and he offered to play with her and act as her knight.
At the entrance of the barbecue restaurant, he helped her teach a lesson to the thugs who were harassing her, and even lost his job because of it, but he didn't care at all. He even took her home and gave her his helmet to wear.
At the intersection of the night market, she begged him to help Pei Zhi. He nodded in agreement, played on the basketball court until he broke his ribs, but left without a word...
Every scene flashed through Pei Xi's mind; everything was still vivid in his mind, and he remembered it so clearly.
Pei Xi's heart started pounding uncontrollably again...
She wasn't an ignorant girl, nor was she a dullard; she knew what this feeling probably meant.
Could it be that she has feelings for Jiang Cheng...?
Pei Xi took a deep breath.
She kept saying that she considered Jiang Cheng a friend.
But she knew perfectly well that she had never felt her heart race like this with any friend before.
Jiang Cheng is indeed different.
For her.
She cannot deceive herself.
Pei Xi turned his head and saw a sliver of moonlight peeking through the gap in the curtains.
The moon shone with a soft light, like a gentle eye, silently watching over her thoughts.
With his thoughts in disarray, Pei Xi suddenly remembered something at an inopportune moment.
She forgot to ask him when he could go back to school.
-
"Why don't you rest for a few more days? You won't miss any classes anyway."
In the senior high school Chinese office at No. 1 High School, a refined-looking middle-aged male teacher was checking leave slips while speaking with his head down.
The person standing in front of him said calmly, "Staying at home is no fun."
The male teacher smiled upon hearing this, with a hint of pride in his voice, "Others would be eager to take a few more days off when they're sick or injured, but you're different from them."
Jiang Cheng kept his hands in his pockets, his eyelids slightly closed, and remained silent.
The male teacher looked up and glanced at him, his eyes filled with a sense of pride.
The school has always been very strict about students taking leave, and homeroom teachers rarely approve leave.
Even if leave is approved, two copies of the leave slip are required. After the leave ends, the homeroom teacher and the moral education director need to stamp and verify the slip. In short, the process is very troublesome.
However, this process only applies to half of Jiang Cheng's case.
He came to the homeroom teacher for a stamp, but it was just a formality.
It's almost a certainty that Jiang Cheng will become the top scorer in the city, and he might even be able to challenge for the top scorer in the province. In a sense, he has special treatment at school.
The school has always applied two different standards to students who bring honor and ordinary students.
In theory, as long as Jiang Cheng's grades can maintain this level, the school will not object to him requesting a leave of absence for any length of time.
After all, there was simply no reason to disagree.
"Alright." The male teacher stamped the inkpad and handed the stamped receipt to Jiang Cheng. "Go back to class."
Jiang Cheng nodded and accepted it, thanked him softly, and then turned and left the office.
He crumpled the sick leave slip into a ball and threw it into the trash can by the office door. When he raised his hand, he found that his fingertip was covered with some undried red ink.
He clicked his tongue softly and walked towards the water room.
As soon as Jiang Cheng stepped into the water room, he stopped in his tracks, his expression momentarily stunned.
The people in the water room were also stunned.
Pei Xi stared at him blankly, then opened her eyes in surprise.
Li Yiming, who was holding a mop next to her, shrank back instinctively when he saw Jiang Cheng at the door.
The three of them fell silent for a moment.
Two seconds later, Jiang Cheng lifted his foot, walked to the edge of the pool, turned on the tap, and rubbed the ink on his fingertips.
They acted as if they hadn't seen the two of them at all.
Li Yiming snapped out of her daze, pulled a pack of tissues from her pocket, looked at Pei Xi's wet hands, and asked her, "Pei Xi, I have tissues, do you want some?"
Pei Xi glanced at Jiang Cheng's hunched back, then said softly, "Okay, thank you."
Li Yiming blushed, pulled out a tissue and handed it to Pei Xi, saying shyly, "You're welcome."
He pressed the water off the mop, then said to Pei Xi, "By the way, the teacher asked me to tell you that for this school anniversary celebration, every class needs to draw a blackboard newspaper, and this arduous task is assigned to you."
Pei Xi nodded, not surprised at all, "Okay, I understand."
