Chapter 64 Why are you only coming back now?

Jiang Cheng arrived at the abandoned amusement park.

He pushed open the door and went inside. Everything was the same as when he last came: the uneven road, the faded and worn-out carousel, and the wild grass swaying in the wind.

The only difference is that there's one less person by my side.

He came with Pei Xi last time.

Pei Xi also said with a smile that they were friends.

What he didn't tell Pei Xi was that his last visit here wasn't the first time he'd come here since it was abandoned.

He has come here many times over the years.

Whenever he's in a bad mood, he comes here, leans against the pillar in front of the carousel, and sits quietly by himself.

In the stillness, he seemed to be able to touch a precious warmth through the desolate, long-forgotten landscape before him.

The light of the setting sun was too dazzling, and as Jiang Cheng looked at it, his vision suddenly became blurry.

The scene before me seemed to have changed.

After a heavy snowfall, in the dead of winter, soft gloves, pink little figures, and laughter like that of a little oriole.

Jiang Cheng blinked, feeling a burning sensation in his eyes.

He lowered his head, rubbed the corner of his eye with his palm, leaving a slight red mark on his skin.

I sat there for what seemed like forever, until the sun began to set, the streetlights along the road came on, and the lights on the tall buildings in the distance started to come on one by one.

Jiang Cheng chuckled, suddenly feeling utterly bewildered.

He was never blessed on his birthday anyway, and he was used to it. I don't know what he's upset about now.

They're becoming less and less self-aware as they get older.

This was just his life as it always was.

Jiang Cheng curled his lips into a smile, his eyes filled with sarcasm, as if he were mocking his current self.

He stood up, dusted himself off, put his hands in his pockets, and walked toward the door.

He took long strides and walked very fast, returning to the alleyway entrance of the urban village in just a few minutes.

The alley was still messy, a gray and dilapidated place. The streetlights were old and in disrepair, many of them barely shining, pitifully emitting their last faint light.

But in such a cramped and gloomy environment, even a little bit of dim light is a blessing and a luxury.

Jiang Cheng lowered his head and quickly walked past the last alleyway. As soon as he turned into it, he suddenly stopped in his tracks.

He opened his eyes and for a moment thought he was hallucinating.

Not far away, under the dim streetlights, a person was sitting on the steps by the door, arms wrapped around knees, head drooping, dozing off like a kitten.

Jiang Cheng felt as if his blood had frozen.

He stood still, his fingers trembling slightly inside his pocket.

Pei Xi's hair was not tied up, but draped over her shoulders, gently sliding to both sides as she moved her head, shimmering with a supple sheen under the light.

He could even see her eyelashes casting a shadow on her porcelain-white face.

Jiang Cheng even slowed his breathing, instinctively not daring to disturb the scene.

The scene before him was so beautiful that it seemed like a one-sided illusion.

He was afraid that he would disappear in the blink of an eye.

In an instant, the person not far away seemed to realize something and slowly raised their head.

Jiang Cheng met those amber eyes.

Even under such lighting, those pupils still shone brightly.

He saw her gaze linger, her expression somewhat bewildered, as if she were trying to determine whether the person before her was a hallucination caused by her distress.

He remained silent, letting her look at him.

The two of them, one sitting and the other standing, gazed at each other silently through the dim light.

After what seemed like an eternity, Pei Xi finally spoke, cautiously calling his name: "Jiang Cheng?"

She frowned, her eyes welling up with tears. "Why are you only getting back now..."

The voice carried a complaint, yet also sounded aggrieved.

It's stringy and sticky, like sweet candy.
