Before Jiang Cheng could speak, Pei Xi continued, "I sent you messages but you didn't reply."
She won't answer my calls.
"I thought you had disappeared."
Her brow furrowed deeper and deeper, and the grievance in her voice grew heavier and heavier.
Jiang Cheng was taken aback, took out his phone from his pocket, and sure enough, saw a dense barrage of message notifications.
He had his phone muted, so he didn't hear it.
His lips moved, and he was about to explain when he heard Pei Xi say in a low voice, "I thought you were angry with me."
Jiang Cheng tightened his grip on his phone.
Why would he be angry with Pei Xi?
"I didn't mean to ignore you, I just didn't see you," Jiang Cheng explained in a low voice, then paused and added, "...Why are you here?"
“I’ve been waiting for you,” Pei Xi replied immediately.
She returned to the movie theater and waited outside until the movie ended, but she never saw him.
I made many phone calls and sent several messages, but they all went unanswered.
She could only wait for him at his doorstep.
"Wait for me...what for?" Jiang Cheng asked.
Pei Xi smiled, and as if by magic, took out a square cardboard box about the size of two palms from behind her back, shook it gently, and said, "It's for your birthday."
Jiang Cheng suddenly froze.
“Zhu Yuan said today is your birthday.” Pei Xi frowned, looking at Jiang Cheng, her tone slightly reproachful, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Before Jiang Cheng could answer, Pei Xi added, "I love birthdays the most because I get to eat cake."
“I carefully selected this cake; this cake is especially delicious.” Pei Xi pouted, as if complaining, “If you hadn’t come back soon, the cake would have melted.”
She talked too much, and Jiang Cheng didn't know where to begin his response, so he simply stood there and listened quietly.
His dark eyes gazed intently at her vivid face.
Even now, he still feels that this scene is so beautiful it's like an illusion.
"Why are you standing so far away?" Pei Xi frowned, finally realizing his silence, and waved to him, "Come here."
After she finished speaking, she stood up, but unexpectedly her legs went weak and she almost fell back down.
Jiang Chengfei quickly stepped forward and firmly supported her arm.
Pei Xi looked up at him and smiled, "Thank you."
She paused for a moment, moved her leg muscles a few times, and only after confirming that she was alright did Jiang Cheng release her.
His eyes darkened.
I don't know how long she waited there; her legs were even numb.
"Let's go inside and eat the cake." Pei Xi tugged at Jiang Cheng's sleeve.
"Okay." Jiang Cheng nodded, opened the door, and the two walked into the house.
The door to the inner room was opened, and the lights were turned on, instantly illuminating the room.
Pei Xi placed the cake on the coffee table, then carefully untied the wrapping ribbon and opened the box.
It's a gradient blue cake, the color scheme resembling the transition from dark to light seawater. There aren't any extraneous designs, but it looks exquisite and beautiful.
Jiang Cheng had never eaten such an exquisite and beautiful cake before.
He sat on the sofa and watched Pei Xi take out the candles and stick them in one by one.
"Do you have a lighter?" Pei Xi turned to ask him.
Jiang Cheng nodded, found a lighter, and then lit the candles one by one.
The colorful candles instantly ignited with a bright golden flame.
"Wait a minute, there's one more thing." Pei Xi smiled at Jiang Cheng, a sly glint in his eyes.
She took something out of the bag, folded it in her hand, and handed it to Jiang Cheng with a smile, "A birthday hat, you have to wear it too."
Jiang Cheng glanced at the old-fashioned paper hat in her hand, then obediently lowered his head, revealing the top of his head to her, and said, "Okay."
Pei Xi was taken aback, not expecting him to be so cooperative.
So she respectfully complied and placed the paper hat on Jiang Cheng's head.
"Okay," she said.
Jiang Cheng looked up, and Pei Xi, seeing his face, burst out laughing.
His stern features, paired with that silly hat, actually made him unexpectedly cute.
"Alright, now you can blow out the candles and make a wish." Pei Xi picked up the cake on the table and presented it to him.
The warm yellow candlelight illuminated their features, and Pei Xi said softly, "You can make three wishes on your birthday."
Jiang Cheng looked at her through the candlelight and nodded. "Okay."
Then he looked at the flickering flames and silently recited in his mind.
My first wish is that Pei Xi can always be safe, healthy and happy.
His second wish was to earn lots and lots of money.
My third wish...
His third wish is that Pei Xi can spend his birthday with him next year.
He's not greedy; he just wants it to be next year.
After making his promise, he took a deep breath and blew out all the candles.
Pei Xi put down the cake and asked him curiously, "Did you make three wishes?"
Jiang Cheng nodded, "Yes."
Pei Xi smiled and moved closer to him, as if sharing a secret, and whispered, "I'll tell you, the third wish is the easiest to come true."
After saying that, she smiled and pretended to be serious, saying, "I've done the calculations, and I'm sure it will come true."
Jiang Cheng looked at her, his eyes filled with tenderness, and he silently curled the corners of his lips.
He said, "Okay."
