Chapter 8 She hasn't been back for almost half a year.

Pei Xi never expected that the police station, which they couldn't get into when they fought on the basketball court last time, would eventually let them barge in.

Pei Zhi and Shi Chen had bruises on their eyebrows and mouths, their school uniforms were filthy, and their hair was messy and stuck to their foreheads. They looked as disheveled as could be.

Those thugs were frequent visitors to the police station, and the officers knew what kind of people they were. In addition, with Shen Miaoyi and the old lady testifying that they were the ones who started the trouble by using counterfeit money, the police did not make things difficult for Pei Xi and the others. They simply called their guardians, asked them to come to the police station to sign some documents, and took them back.

Shi Chen's father arrived quickly, his face as black as the bottom of a pot. After signing the papers, he took Shi Chen away.

After Shen Miaoyi and the old woman confirmed that everyone was alright, they went back to the shop to clean up the mess left by the fight.

Only Pei Xi and Pei Zhi remained in the lobby of the police station.

A kind-hearted policeman with a square face brought some medicine and asked Pei Xi to treat Pei Zhi's facial wounds. He even joked, "Young man, you're so handsome, you can't let him get disfigured."

Pei Xi thought the policeman made sense, so he quickly got some medicine to disinfect the wound. Pei Zhi, who could never tolerate pain, writhed in agony.

He kept moving around, making it difficult for Pei Xi to apply the medicine properly. He accidentally pressed his hand on the wound, which made him wince in pain.

Pei Xi couldn't stand it any longer and said softly, "Pei Zhi, don't move."

"...oh."

Pei Zhi was already feeling guilty because he had implicated Pei Xi, and when he heard her voice turn somber, he immediately stopped moving and endured the pain as the medicine was applied.

Time passed unnoticed, and it was already pitch black outside. Pei Xi glanced at the wall clock; it was almost nine o'clock.

She clutched her stomach, feeling completely empty after all that commotion, and whispered in Pei Zhi's ear, "I'm so hungry."

Pei Zhi's eyes showed even deeper apology, and he lowered his voice: "Bear with it a little longer, and your brother will take you to eat something delicious later."

The square-faced police officer yawned, nestled in his seat, and looked at the two of them. He frowned, glanced at his watch, and asked, "Young men, where are your guardians? Why haven't they arrived yet?"

Upon hearing this, Pei Zhi's expression suddenly froze.

He leaned back in his seat, his gentle expression vanishing instantly. He turned his head away, his lips forming a tight line.

Pei Xi glanced at his tense jaw, then looked at the square-faced policeman and said softly, "Officer, let's wait a little longer."

The square-faced policeman nodded, about to speak, when the sound of a door being pushed open came from the entrance of the hall.

The group paused, looking towards the door. A young man in a suit and tie walked in, wearing glasses, with a neat hairstyle, and carrying a black briefcase, exuding the air of a social elite.

The young man entered the house with the sound of his leather shoes clicking on the tiles. He glanced at the two siblings sitting there, then walked straight up to the square-faced police officer and extended his hand in a businesslike manner: "Hello, I am Ms. Pei Ruoyun's lawyer, the guardian of the two children. My surname is Yan."

-

"President Pei is very worried about you. She instructed you to make sure to call her back after you get home."

At the entrance of the police station, Yan Mo looked at the two siblings. His deep, mechanical voice was devoid of emotion, as if he were just a machine relaying messages.

Pei Zhi draped one arm over Pei Xi's shoulder, remaining silent with his lips pressed tightly together.

That was a posture of resistance and defense.

Pei Xi silently squeezed Yan Mo's palm and said, "Okay, I'll call her when I get back. You can tell your mother first so she doesn't have to worry."

"Okay." Yan Mo nodded and looked at Pei Xi, saying, "I'll take you back."

“No need.” Pei Zhi pulled Pei Xi’s wrist and turned around directly. “We’ll go back ourselves.”

Just as he lifted his foot, Yan Mo's voice came from behind: "President Pei instructed that it's too late and not safe, so he asked me to personally escort you..."

"Does she know I'm eighteen?" Pei Zhi suddenly turned around, a mocking smile in his voice. "I didn't worry much when I was little, so what's there to worry about now that I'm grown up?"

Even though Yan Mo was calm and collected, he was still taken aback by Yan Mo's sudden outburst of emotion.

Pei Xi didn't seem surprised at all, as if it were something he was used to.

She sighed almost imperceptibly, then smiled slightly at Yan Mo, "Thank you, Attorney Yan. My brother and I will go back together, so please don't trouble yourself."

"Okay, be careful," Yan Mo nodded.

Pei Xi then asked, "By the way, do you know when my mother will be able to come back? She hasn't been back for almost half a year."

Pei Ruoyun is determined to build her own bag brand. In the past two years, she has received many foreign trade orders and has been running between the European market and factories in Southeast Asia. She has not been back to Yushi for a long time.

Looking into Pei Xi's expectant eyes, Yan Mo's usually eloquent words suddenly faltered. After a moment of hesitation, he finally spoke, "President Pei is very busy and probably doesn't have time right now..."

Before she could finish speaking, Pei Xi swayed, and Pei Zhi, with a cold face, grabbed her wrist and turned to leave.

Unable to resist Pei Zhi's strength, Pei Xi turned around and gave Yan Mo a slightly apologetic look.

Yan Mo waved his hand, indicating that it was nothing to worry about.

He stared intently at the backs of the two figures, one tall and one short, until they gradually disappeared into the distance. Only then did he take out his phone and dial a number.

The call was quickly answered, and a calm and efficient woman's voice came through: "Hello, Attorney Yan."

"President Pei," Yan Mo said solemnly, "the matter here has been resolved."

Pei Ruoyun gave a soft "Mmm," then asked, "How are they? Are they injured?"

"The police said it's just some superficial injuries," Yan Mo said. "Don't worry, only your eldest son was injured; your daughter is perfectly fine."

The person on the other end of the phone seemed relieved. "How are they doing?"

Yan Mo paused for two seconds, carefully choosing his words before saying, "Your eldest son seems to be very angry."

Pei Ruoyun didn't seem surprised. She gave a soft "hmm" and then asked, "Where's my daughter?"

Yan Mo answered truthfully: "Your daughter is in a good mood, but she just asked me when you can return to Yushi."

There was a pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a sigh of relief after two seconds. "Okay, I understand."

Pei Ruoyun's voice remained calm, so calm that it seemed as if everything that had just happened was merely a routine inquiry.

"Thank you for your hard work, Attorney Yan. Luckily you were on a business trip in Yulin City, which helped me a lot. I will transfer your overtime pay to you later."

"Okay." Yan Mo smiled silently. "Thank you, President Pei."
