When the two were taken back to the office by the dean of students, blood was still seeping from the corner of Jiang Cheng's mouth.
The two men stood with their legs apart and hands behind their backs in front of the desk, their heads slightly lowered, silent and not uttering a word, their postures remarkably identical.
The director sat in his chair, looking at the two of them, and sighed three times, his face turning ashen.
His facial muscles twitched with anger, causing his glasses to tremble.
The top student and the second-ranked student in the grade actually got into a fight in the school corridor!
If word gets out, how will the school face?!
"Why did you fight?" the director asked in a deep voice, his voice tinged with anger and a hint of sorrow.
A moment of silence fell over the office.
Jiang Cheng raised his hand and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with his fingertips. Pei Zhi turned his face to the side, his jawline taut and sharp.
The two of them kept their mouths tightly shut, not saying a word, as silent as a gourd.
The head of student affairs slammed his hand on the table, his glasses trembling again. "Have you all gone mute?!"
Pei Zhi turned his head, frowned, and suddenly spoke up, correcting his choice of words: "It wasn't a fight, it was me beating him up unilaterally."
Head of Academic Affairs: "?"
You sound pretty proud of yourself?
He said "Oh," and frowned at Pei Zhi, "So what do you mean?"
Pei Zhi looked at him and said in a deep voice, "What I mean is, if you're going to punish someone, just punish me. He didn't lay a hand on me."
The head of the teaching department scoffed, a forced smile on his face, "You still complain about fairness and justice?"
He then looked at Jiang Cheng and asked him, "And you?"
Jiang Cheng nodded slightly: "I think he's right."
Pei Zhi: "?"
Jiang Cheng added, "But I don't intend to hold him accountable, so don't punish him."
The Dean of Students: "?" So you two have arranged everything perfectly for me!
He scoffed, looking at the injury on Jiang Cheng's face, and said, "You're quite magnanimous."
Then he picked up the teacup on the table, took a sip of strong tea, and looked at the two people in front of him. "I'll ask you one more time, why did you fight?"
The office remained silent.
Two tall figures stood there quietly, like two pleasing door gods.
The director spat out a tea stalk and said, "Like to waste time? Then let's wait it out here and see who can outlast whom."
After saying that, he put down his teacup and pretended to pick up the documents on the table to look through them, as if he were ignoring the two of them.
After a moment, Pei Zhi couldn't hold back any longer and broke the silence. He frowned and said, "Do I need a reason? I just don't like him."
The director lifted his eyelids to glance at him, chuckled, and almost laughed, "What did Jiang Cheng do to you?"
Pei Zhi snorted, a hint of sullenness in his voice, "I just find him annoying. Seeing him makes me not bother anyone else."
Upon hearing this, the director frowned, his sparse, bushy eyebrows furrowing, and then turned to look at Jiang Cheng beside him.
He didn't say a word, showing no anger whatsoever after being hit.
It was as if the person Pei Zhi was talking about wasn't him at all.
He had heard that the two of them had never gotten along well. As the saying goes, two tigers cannot share one mountain, and teenage boys are at the age when they like to compete.
The director touched his eyebrows, indicating his understanding.
Actually, he didn't intend to make things too difficult for the two of them, because their grades were good enough, and they weren't usually troublemakers, so there was no need to make a big deal out of it.
Seeing that he couldn't get anything useful out of him, the director said to Pei Zhi, "Then give him a demerit and notify his parents."
"Write another self-criticism and submit it tomorrow."
Pei Zhi nodded, having no objections.
The director picked up his teacup and tapped it on the table. He looked at the two of them and said, "Alright, those who need to apply their medicine should go, and those who need to go see the show should go. Let's leave it at that. If something like this happens again, it won't be so simple."
"You two are role models for our school. You should set an example for other students, understand?"
The two nodded perfunctorily, then left the office one after the other.
Pei Xi arrived just in time to witness this scene.
She saw Pei Zhi ahead, quickly walked up to him, grabbed his sleeve, and looked at his face with concern, asking, "A classmate told me that they saw you fighting with Jiang Cheng in the hallway and that you were arrested by the dean of students! Are you alright?"
Pei Zhi felt a warmth in his heart, "What could possibly happen to me? I wasn't the one who got beaten up..."
Before he could finish speaking, Pei Xi's expression changed, and he looked at Jiang Cheng standing behind him.
His lips were bright red, and there was a bruise on his cheekbone; his handsome face was bruised.
Although it wasn't disfigured, it actually had a more battle-damaged aesthetic, but it still looked somewhat horrifying.
Pei Xi was stunned, and opened his eyes wide in surprise.
How could Jiang Cheng, with his fighting prowess, be beaten so badly by Pei Zhi?
Pei Xi's brow furrowed deeper as he looked up at Pei Zhi and demanded, "What are you two doing? Why are you both bleeding?"
Pei Zhi coughed and said somewhat awkwardly, "Men, it's normal for them to fight a couple of times if they disagree."
He scoffed again, "Besides, we've never gotten along, what's the big deal?"
Pei Xi looked the two of them back and forth several times, and asked with some doubt, "Why is it that only Jiang Cheng has injuries on his face? He didn't fight back?"
Pei Zhi: "".
Just as he was silent, Jiang Cheng suddenly whispered from behind, "No, it's because I can't beat him."
Pei Xi looked at the two of them suspiciously; she could tell they were both lying to her.
Don't tell her the truth.
"you..."
Just as she was about to speak, Pei Zhi clicked his tongue, ruffled her hair, and said quickly, "This is an adult matter, kids shouldn't interfere."
