The pocket money Pei Ruoyun was referring to included all expenses except for basic breakfast and lunch.
In other words, for the next two weeks, Pei Zhi's spending will be limited to swiping his meal card when eating at school.
Before going to bed that night, Pei Xi felt a pang of guilt. She went to Pei Zhi's room, leaned against the door, and looked at him, saying, "Brother, how about I share my allowance with you..."
“No need.” Pei Zhi sat on the bed and refused decisively.
“She cut off my allowance, and I turned around and spent your money. What kind of behavior is that?” He looked at Pei Xi, his tone firm and resolute. “A real man should be responsible for his actions. A gentleman’s agreement is a promise, and I have a clear conscience.”
It's just pocket money.
As long as he doesn't spend it, it's fine.
He could endure eating only steamed buns and pickled vegetables for half a month straight.
Pei Xi frowned upon hearing this, then carefully asked, "Brother, do you remember that Shi Chen's birthday is the day after tomorrow?"
Pei Zhi: "".
The resolute expression on his face suddenly froze.
Pei Xi added, "Didn't you say you were going to give Shi Chen a pair of sneakers? Those shoes don't seem cheap."
Pei Zhi: "..."
That idiot Fei Zhi will only cause trouble for him at crucial moments!
He's out of pocket money, where am I going to get the money to buy him sneakers?!
Pei Zhi's face showed a hint of difficulty. Realizing that Pei Xi was looking at him, he coughed and looked away, saying, "You don't need to worry about that. I... I have my own way. He will definitely receive a gift."
A hint of suspicion flashed in Pei Xi's eyes, and he looked like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
She wanted to offer to buy it for him, but then she thought that Pei Zhi would definitely disagree.
Pei Xi sighed inwardly.
Unfortunately, the girl who sells knitted dolls in Yi City has stopped supplying them, saying that the production schedule is too slow. Otherwise, she could have let Pei Zhi inherit her "business".
Seeing Pei Xi's suspicious look, Pei Zhi walked over and ruffled her hair. "Don't worry about me. If I don't have money, I'll go out and earn it. I don't believe I can't even earn this little bit!"
If Jiang Cheng can make money, why can't he?
"Trust your brother." Pei Zhi looked at Pei Xi with confidence and certainty.
Pei Xi pursed his lips and hummed in agreement.
-
The next morning, Pei Xi got up and found that Pei Zhi was gone.
His room was empty; it seemed he had left quite some time ago.
Pei Xi sent him a message while eating breakfast, but waited for several minutes without a reply.
What she didn't know was that Pei Zhi had been wandering around the roadside for almost two hours since he left home in the morning, but he hadn't found a single temporary job.
He was sitting on the curb, looking dejected.
When you go to a construction site, they not only require someone with experience, but they also say that just by looking at his delicate skin, they can tell he can't do these kinds of jobs, and they just wave him away.
When you go to a restaurant, they don't hire temporary workers; they pay wages monthly.
He delivers food... He doesn't have a car, only a small, unusable electric scooter.
Pei Zhi scratched his hair hard.
He really wanted to dilute his boastful words from last night.
How come Jiang Cheng can find so many places to work, while he can't find even one?!
Just as he was sighing, a group of elderly men and women suddenly passed by, talking excitedly.
Pei Zhi keenly noticed the words "daily payment" and "meals provided".
He jumped to his feet, stepped forward, and, true to his nature, asked the woman leading the group, "Auntie, where are you all going?"
"Let's go pick apples at the orchard!" the older woman replied enthusiastically, looking at the handsome young man in front of her.
She looked to be in her fifties or sixties, with rosy cheeks and a robust build; she was clearly a skilled worker.
Pei Zhi rubbed his hands together and asked, "Can I come along?"
The woman was somewhat surprised. "Are you sure? We are indeed short-handed right now, but there's a condition: you have to be able to persevere. This job is quite tiring."
Pei Zhi saw that things were going well, so he nodded, "I'm sure."
The woman smiled and said, "Two hundred and thirty a day, paid daily. Can you accept that?"
"Sure," Pei Zhi nodded hurriedly.
Although 230 couldn't even buy a sleeve of the shirt he was wearing, it was the only job he could find.
Upon hearing this, the woman pointed to the bus not far away with a hearty expression, "Alright, then you can get on the bus with us. This bus goes directly to the orchard."
And so, Pei Zhi sat among a group of elderly men and women as the car bumped along towards the apple orchard in the suburbs.
Upon arriving at the orchard, the leader counted the number of people, then divided them into groups of two, with each group responsible for a specific area.
Pei Zhi and another stout woman in her fifties were assigned to the same group.
The leader explained the precautions: one person was responsible for standing on the ladder to cut the apples, while the other person was below, carrying the basket on their chest to catch them.
Pei Zhi readily chose to be the one cutting the apple.
It wasn't until he stepped onto the ladder that Pei Zhi tragically remembered something—he was afraid of heights.
But seeing how old the woman was, Pei Zhi couldn't bear to let her come up while he went down, so he mustered up his courage and climbed the ladder.
He cut it off with scissors and handed it to the older woman below, who then put it in the basket she was carrying on her back.
They cooperated quite well back and forth.
It's just a bit inefficient.
Pei Zhi was not skilled and was also afraid of heights, so his hands were a bit slow. While others had picked a whole basket full, they had only filled half of theirs. The old lady below looked up and urged, "Young man, hurry up! If you can't manage, let me go up and pick some more."
