Christmas arrived a few days after the first snow.
Pei Xi wasn't really into this kind of holiday, but many people at school were quite enthusiastic about it, busy making "peace apples" and giving out small cards.
Every year around this time, Pei Zhi receives a large number of beautifully packaged apples, many of which are secretly placed on his desk. He doesn't know who sent them and can't return them, so he can only take them home.
So, around Christmas, we never lacked apples at home for quite some time.
Pei Xi looked around the classroom and saw everyone fiddling with those colorful packages. Without even thinking, Pei Zhi's desk must already be overflowing.
During lunch break, Pei Xi thoughtfully found a plastic bag and prepared to give it to Pei Zhi to put apples in.
Pei Xi went upstairs to Pei Zhi's classroom. There weren't many people in the classroom, and he wasn't there either. Pei Xi went straight in, found Pei Zhi's seat, and stuffed the bag into the crevice of his fully packed desk.
She walked out the back door, and just as she stepped out, a girl stopped her and said politely, "Excuse me, could you do me a favor?"
Pei Xi looked at the apple in her hand and saw her shy expression, thinking that she was probably here to give Pei Zhi something again.
She had seen this situation far too many times before.
So she smiled and asked, "What kind of help?"
The girl leaned closer to her, lowering her voice: "Could you tell me where Jiang Cheng from your class sits?"
Pei Xi's smile froze.
She blinked, and after a couple of seconds, she realized that she was referring to Jiang Cheng, not Pei Zhi.
Pei Xi quickly snapped out of his reverie and pointed to the clean, simple table by the window, "His seat is over there..."
Before she could finish speaking, she caught a glimpse of Jiang Cheng, who had arrived at some point and was standing by the fence not far away, his dark eyes fixed on her.
Pei Xi's outstretched finger froze for a moment.
Then it turned around and pointed behind the girl.
"Why don't you just ask him directly?"
The girl was startled, turned around and looked over. The moment she saw Jiang Cheng, a look of nervousness appeared on her face.
Jiang Cheng didn't look at her, but stared intently at Pei Xi.
The girl hesitated for two seconds, and had just taken half a step forward when she heard Jiang Cheng's cold voice: "Please take it back, I don't need it."
The girl froze in her tracks, her head hanging low, her expression awkward and somewhat dejected.
Then he walked away quickly without saying a word.
Pei Xi watched her retreating figure and, for some reason, suddenly felt a pang of heartache.
She must have mustered up a lot of courage to make the decision to come.
As Pei Xi was thinking this, she suddenly felt something was off. Wait a minute, that's her love rival. Why is she feeling sorry for her love rival?
She frowned. When a person encounters a rival in love, their first reaction is usually to feel nervous or angry, but why didn't she feel any of that?
As she was thinking this, she didn't notice that Jiang Cheng's gaze was fixed on her, deep and unfathomable.
"You need to show her my seat."
It was a very light and understated statement, but for some reason, it felt like an ant had stepped on Pei Xi's nerves.
She looked up and met Jiang Cheng's gaze, suddenly feeling a little guilty.
"...She asked me." She said weakly.
Jiang Cheng seemed to sigh very softly, "Do you point people out to everyone who comes to you with this question?"
His tone wasn't accusatory, not harsh at all; it was just like a normal inquiry.
However, Pei Xi seemed to, apparently, inexplicably detect a faint hint of resentment.
She almost thought she had misheard.
“I…” Pei Xi hesitated for a moment before answering, “I just find it hard to refuse.”
When others ask her politely, she has no right to refuse. Should she deliberately lie and say she doesn't know?
"Are you angry?" Pei Xi frowned, looking at him with a probing gaze.
"No." Jiang Cheng turned his head to the side, his voice unusually low.
He knew his emotions were irrational, so he forcefully suppressed them.
Otherwise it would look too ugly.
Then, as if by magic, he pulled out a pink object from behind his back and handed it to Pei Xi, saying, "This is for you."
Pei Xi was taken aback, only then realizing that his hand had been behind his back the whole time.
She smiled and took it, looked it over, and then looked up at him and asked, "Did you just buy this?"
Jiang Cheng hummed in agreement.
He wasn't interested in these things, but he overheard them saying that giving this as a gift symbolizes peace, so he thought he'd buy one for Pei Xi.
May she always be safe and sound.
Pei Xi held the apple inside, the wrapping paper making a slight rustling sound. Suddenly, she understood something, and a flash of inspiration struck her.
She seemed to understand why she didn't feel nervous or angry when she saw girls expressing affection for Jiang Cheng.
Because she seemed to genuinely believe that Jiang Cheng only had eyes for her and would only treat her well.
She will not have any rivals in love.
Hmm, Pei Xi felt a little embarrassed; she suddenly realized how narcissistic she was.
Having lived for over a decade, she had never realized she was such a narcissistic person before.
That's really strange.
She looked at Jiang Cheng, clutching the apple in her hand, and blinked shyly, "...But I didn't prepare a gift."
Jiang Cheng was taken aback, a look of confusion in his eyes, and asked, "What are you preparing?"
His tone was so matter-of-fact that even Pei Xi was taken aback.
The implication is that as long as I give it to you, that's enough; what do you need to prepare?
Just as Pei Xi was about to speak, he heard a familiar voice from the side: "Pei Xi, what are you doing standing here?"
