Chapter 46 Did I step on you?
Yan Shuang then remembered that she had just hung up on him, and a sense of guilt immediately welled up in her heart.
“I’m sorry, I’ve been really busy lately,” she said, taking the keys. “Would you like to... come in and have a seat?”
"Won't this disturb your rest?"
"No, it won't happen." Yan Shuang pushed open the door and gestured for him to come in.
The apartment wasn't big, but it was very clean. Lin Chengyu's gaze quickly swept around the room, finally landing on an exquisite cat tree in the corner.
"Do you have a cat?" he asked.
"Okay, call him Snowball." Yan Shuang put down her bag and called softly towards the bedroom, "Snowball? Come out and greet the guest."
An orange cat strolled out gracefully, its eyes warily fixed on the stranger.
"So beautiful." Lin Chengyu squatted down and held out his finger for the cat to sniff, his movements as practiced as if he often dealt with animals. "I also had a Ragdoll when I was in England."
Yan Shuang was worried about who would take care of Xueqiu when she went to America tomorrow, and Lin Chengyu's appearance was like a savior from heaven.
"I have a favor to ask," she said shyly. "My company has arranged for me to go on a business trip to the United States at the last minute. Could you please look after Xueqiu?"
Lin Chengyu's fingers were lightly scratching Xueqiu's chin when he heard this, he paused for a moment.
Yan Shuang didn't notice that his eyes behind his glasses suddenly darkened.
“Of course.” He looked up, his face regaining that reassuring smile. “I really like cats.”
"Great!" Yan Shuang exclaimed with relief, hugging a pile of cat supplies. "These are its treats, toys, and the vet's phone number..."
"How long will you be in America?" Lin Chengyu took the things, his fingertips "casually" brushing against the back of her hand.
"It's not clear yet." Yan Shuang didn't seem to care about the small touch. "It's related to a company project."
The air suddenly became somewhat stagnant.
Lin Chengyu quietly arranged the cat food, his profile appearing exceptionally handsome under the light.
After a few seconds, he looked up and gave a slightly forlorn yet forcedly cheerful smile: "Then I'll wait for my sister to come back."
This title sent a shiver down Yan Shuang's spine.
Lin Chengyu called her that with a hint of coquetry, making it hard for her to refuse.
"I'm so sorry for standing you up so many times," Yan Shuang said apologetically. "I'll make it up to you when I get back."
Lin Chengyu stretched out his hand and hooked his little finger together, "Pinky promise."
Yan Shuang chuckled and obligingly extended her little finger: "Pinky promise."
Lin Chengyu smiled and picked up Snowball: "Then let me show it around my house first? We can come back to pick up the other things tomorrow."
"Okay, thank you for your help." Yan Shuang saw him to the door. "Thank you so much."
Lin Chengyu stood in the corridor, holding a cat in his arms, his eyes behind his glasses curving into crescents: "Sister, you don't need to be so polite."
He paused, then said, "I'll miss you."
-
The next day, when the doorbell rang, Yan Shuang was deep in a chaotic dream.
She dreamt that she was standing in an airport, but she couldn't find her passport. Behind her was Shangqiu Zhu's cold and aloof face, which made her extremely anxious.
Yan Shuang struggled to open her eyes. Her phone showed 9:30 a.m., five hours before her flight.
She dragged her tired body to open the door and saw Lin Chengyu standing outside, wearing a light gray casual suit, his eyes behind his glasses filled with concern.
"Good morning, sister." He smiled and held up the paper bag in his hand. "I brought you breakfast."
Yan Shuang then remembered that she had asked him to come and pick up Xueqiu's supplies today.
She rubbed her temples, somewhat slow to react: "So early...please come in."
Lin Chengyu's gaze lingered for a second on her messy hair and the straps of her nightgown before he politely looked away: "You look like you didn't sleep well."
"I was packing until four in the morning." Yan Shuang took the paper bag, which contained her favorite soy milk and pan-fried buns, both at the perfect temperature. "Thank you."
Lin Chengyu walked to the kitchen with practiced ease to get a plate: "Go wash up, I'll heat it up for you."
Yan Shuang nodded and dragged herself into the bathroom.
The warm water washed away some of her fatigue, and she quickly put on some light makeup and changed her clothes.
Stepping out of the bathroom, breakfast was already neatly laid out on the coffee table, and Lin Chengyu was tidying up Xueqiu's belongings on the balcony.
"You don't need to go to all that trouble," Yan Shuang said, feeling a little guilty. "I can do it myself."
Lin Chengyu turned around: "You sit down and eat breakfast, I'll do these."
His gaze swept over her, and he smiled, "You look beautiful today."
Half an hour later, the luggage and cat supplies were all packed.
Yan Shuang checked her passport and ticket repeatedly, then suddenly felt dizzy and had to hold onto the sofa for support.
"What's wrong?" Lin Chengyu immediately stepped forward and placed his hand on her lower back.
"It's nothing, I'm probably just too tired." Yan Shuang forced a smile. "I've been under a lot of work pressure lately."
Lin Chengyu frowned and reached out to feel her forehead: "You have a slight fever, take some fever reducer first." His voice suddenly became firm, "My car is downstairs, I'll take you to the airport, you can sleep for a while on the way."
Yan Shuang wanted to refuse, but a wave of exhaustion washed over her, and she finally nodded.
A discreet black BMW was parked downstairs. The driver got out and opened the door as soon as he saw Lin Chengyu.
"To the airport," Lin Chengyu instructed briefly, letting Yan Shuang go first. "Lie down for a while, I'll wake you when we get there."
Yan Shuang wanted to be polite, but the slight swaying of the car as it started felt like the best lullaby, and she unconsciously closed her eyes.
In a daze, she felt someone gently turn her head to one side, followed by a firm and warm touch.
Yan Shuang unconsciously rubbed against him in her sleep and smelled a refreshing fragrance.
The driver saw this in the rearview mirror and was so shocked that he almost stepped on the wrong gas pedal.
In the back seat, the young master, known for his "germaphobia" and "absence from women," was carefully letting a woman's head rest on his shoulder.
Lin Chengyu's gaze was not his usual gentle and polite one, but rather a kind of greedy focus.
The driver quickly looked away, and the car drove onto the highway. Yan Shuang slept even more soundly.
Lin Chengyu's fingers gently brushed through her hair. "Sister..." he murmured silently, his lips almost touching her ear, "Come back soon."
Yan Shuang frowned in her dream, as if sensing something, but ultimately did not wake up.
"Young Master..." the driver couldn't help but ask, "Should we wake Miss Yan? We're almost at the airport."
"No need." He glanced down at his watch. "Let's drive around the ring road again."
The driver opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing and silently changed his route.
Twenty minutes later, Lin Chengyu gently squeezed Yan Shuang's wrist: "Sister, we've arrived."
Yan Shuang groggily opened her eyes and realized that she had been sleeping on Lin Chengyu's shoulder the whole way. She immediately sat up in embarrassment: "I'm sorry, did I press on you?"
"It's okay." Lin Chengyu smiled innocently. "Feeling better?"
Yan Shuang nodded. Although her head still felt a little heavy, it was much better than in the morning.
She tidied her hair, then suddenly realized something was missing: "My hair clip..."
“Here it is.” Lin Chengyu picked up the fallen hair clip from her seat and naturally helped her fasten it back in place.
Yan Shuang thanked her.
When she got off the bus, Lin Chengyu insisted on helping her with her luggage.
People were coming and going at the airport entrance. He grabbed Yan Shuang's wrist and said, "I'll come pick you up when you come back."
Yan Shuang was taken aback for a moment, but then she realized what was happening.
She nodded; they did indeed need to meet frequently and play the role of an engaged couple.
"I'll be going now." She smiled at Lin Chengyu. "I'm leaving Snowball in your care."
Lin Chengyu leaned close to Yan Shuang's ear and whispered, "Remember to miss me."
Then, without waiting for her to react, he gracefully stepped back, waved, and left.
