Chapter 56 You've come to America?
In the library of the University of Southern California, Yan Shuang was buried in a pile of financial reports, the blue light from her laptop screen reflecting on her slightly tired face.
Three consecutive days of project discussions made her almost forget the time, until her phone vibrated and broke her concentration.
The name displayed on the screen made her pause slightly: Lin Chengyu.
She then remembered that she had forgotten to thank the person who had received the package last time.
"Hello, Mr. Lin?" she answered the phone, her voice tinged with apology.
"Sister." Lin Chengyu's gentle voice came from the other end of the phone, the background unusually quiet. "Did I disturb you?"
"No, it's just finished for now." Yan Shuang closed her laptop and rubbed her temples. "By the way, thank you for the last delivery. I was planning to treat you to a meal after I got back to China."
A soft laugh came from the other end of the phone: "Can't you treat me today?"
Yan Shuang happened to hear his English in the background at that moment, and she asked in surprise, "You've come to America?"
"Are you busy today?" Lin Chengyu's voice suddenly lowered a few decibels. "I just arrived in Los Angeles and I'm not familiar with the area... If you're free tonight, could you have dinner with me?"
Yan Shuang glanced at her watch; it was 4:20 PM. She really didn't have any plans for today.
"Okay, where are you? I'll come find you." She readily agreed.
Lin Chengyu didn't expect it to go so smoothly. "Shall I come pick you up?"
"Aren't you unfamiliar with her?" Yan Shuang asked, somewhat surprised.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone.
“I can use Uber,” Lin Chengyu explained.
Yan Shuang laughed out loud: "Alright then, see you at the entrance of USC at 5:30."
After hanging up the phone, Yan Shuang tidied up the documents on the table.
Unbeknownst to her, in the coffee shop diagonally opposite the library, a tall, slender figure was putting down his phone, a triumphant smile playing on his lips.
Lin Chengyu picked up his coffee and took a sip. His gaze passed through the glass window and landed on Yan Shuang, who was walking out of the library in the distance.
His eyes darkened.
In fact, he had been in Los Angeles for five days.
I appear at this coffee shop every afternoon at three o'clock sharp, just to see Yan Shuang walk out of the library building.
On the first day, she rushed to the lab building; on the second day, she had a heated discussion with her classmates; on the third day, she almost bumped into a tree while walking and reading alone...
When the waiter came to refill his coffee, he glanced curiously at the Asian man who had been sitting in the same spot for five consecutive days. Underneath the sketchbook open in front of him were portraits of the same girl in different scenes.
"Sir, is there anything else you need?" the waiter asked.
Lin Chengyu looked up and gave a polite but distant smile: "No need, thank you."
After the waiter left, Lin Chengyu slowly packed up his things and glanced at his watch as he stood up.
It's 4:40, fifty minutes before the agreed time.
He turned and walked in the opposite direction, his back straight as a pine tree, showing no trace of the bewildered newcomer he had just spoken to on the phone.
At 5:25, Lin Chengyu stood under the sycamore tree in front of the USC School of Economics, his slender figure casting a slanted shadow.
The air was filled with the scent of California laurel, and the setting sun gently enveloped him. Just standing there, he exuded a cool, aristocratic air that seemed completely out of place amidst the bustling campus.
A gentle breeze rustled the sycamore leaves, and a few golden leaves swirled down onto his shoulder, only to be casually brushed away by him.
He glanced down at his watch; Yan Shuang should be out soon.
There were many students coming and going around him, and many blonde, blue-eyed girls frequently glanced at him, some even deliberately slowing down their pace in an attempt to attract his attention.
Finally, a hot white girl boldly stepped forward, tossed her long hair, and revealed a confident smile.
"Hi, are you new here? I haven't seen you before."
Lin Chengyu didn't even lift his eyelids, his gaze still fixed on the exit of the teaching building, as if no one was in front of him at all.
Undeterred, the girl took another step closer: "Would you like someone to show you around the campus?"
This time, Lin Chengyu finally reacted. He slowly raised his eyes, his amber pupils as cold as ice, and his thin lips parted slightly: "No."
The sound wasn't loud, but it was chillingly cold.
The girl shivered at his gaze and awkwardly backed away.
Seeing this, several girls who were initially eager to try also wisely gave up the idea.
Just then, the doors of the teaching building opened. Yan Shuang walked out carrying a stack of documents, her hair slightly disheveled by the wind. Lin Chengyu's gaze softened instantly, and the corners of his mouth turned up slightly.
He stood there, watching the evening breeze flutter her ivory-white silk dress, watching her walk towards him step by step in nude strappy high heels.
He had rehearsed this moment countless times: in front of the hotel dressing mirror, in the back seat of the car he came in, and every dusk he had seen her over the past five days.
But reality is far more exciting than imagined.
