Chapter 6 is worth coming all the way back from England.
In the back seat of the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Lin's mother's gaze fell on her son for the umpteenth time.
"Cheng Yu, the ceremony at the hotel is almost over," Lin's mother couldn't help but say, her voice filled with confusion and heartache. "Why do you have to rush there?"
The reading light inside the car cast a warm yellow glow, outlining Lin Chengyu's profile. He had the bone structure of an oriental ink painting, with the transition between his brow bone and nose bridge resembling a meticulous brushstroke, while his jawline flowed like a freehand landscape painting.
At this moment, he was gazing at the neon lights flashing past the window, his phoenix eyes slightly upturned at the corners.
“The flight delay isn’t your fault,” Lin’s mother continued. “The Yan family already informed us.”
Lin Chengyu turned his face, a smile playing on his lips.
"Mom, do you know what the British say? Better late than never."
His voice was very pleasant, with a rhythm unique to someone who had lived in an English-speaking environment for a long time.
As he spoke, his long, slender fingers unconsciously tapped lightly on his knees. His nails were neatly trimmed and his knuckles were clearly defined. These were hands that could both hold a pen to paint and skillfully operate a carving knife.
"You still haven't answered my question." Lin's mother deliberately put on a stern face. "What kind of engagement party is it that made you come all the way back from England? You even put aside your graduation exhibition preparations."
Outside the car window, the light of a red traffic light swept across Lin Chengyu's face, adding a touch of color to his complexion.
"Didn't we say we should learn about the wedding process in China, just in case?"
Lin's mother snorted: "When did you become so concerned about traditional etiquette? Last year when your cousin got married, you made all sorts of excuses to be her best man."
Lin Chengyu chuckled softly, his eyes incredibly deep, giving him a mature charm beyond his years.
Mr. Lin turned around from the front seat and glanced helplessly at his wife: "Forget it, let him be. Anyway, the Lin family should be showing their faces more often in social situations."
Lin's mother would naturally agree to his request.
Lin Chengyu became fascinated with painting at the age of six, and his father hired a master of traditional Chinese painting to teach him at home at a high price. When he was fifteen, he said he wanted to learn oil painting, and he was immediately sent to Florence to study. Now he is pursuing a master's degree in art in London, and his studio is located in Chelsea.
She didn't ask any more questions.
Meanwhile, in the pavilion of the banquet hall.
Yan Shuang sat barefoot on the steps, the openwork design on the back of her dress revealing a small patch of skin. The champagne color made her skin, which rarely saw the sun, look like fine mutton fat jade. The exquisite design of the upper part of the dress perfectly outlined her slender yet full figure.
Without any exaggerated backless or deep V-neck design, the waistline alone reveals her beautiful proportions, which have long been hidden by suit jackets.
She was holding a white rose she had picked, tearing off the petals one by one.
The moonlight washed away all her pretense, and she looked more real than ever before.
Shangqiu Zhu walked forward, deliberately crushing a withered branch with his leather shoes.
With a "click," Yan Shuang suddenly looked up, a look of surprise flashing in her eyes.
She hid the tattered rose behind her back, and a perfect professional smile returned to her lips: "President Shang, why don't you come out for some fresh air too?"
"Hmm." He sat down next to her, about a fist's distance away.
The night breeze swept through the rose bushes, bringing with it a wave of fragrance.
A silence spread among them, yet strangely, it wasn't awkward.
The noise in the banquet hall was muffled by the floor-to-ceiling windows, as if they had temporarily escaped that gilded cage.
"Shuangshuang!"
A slightly shrill female voice broke the silence.
Shangqiu Zhu noticed that Yan Shuang's shoulders tensed almost imperceptibly, and a clear hint of reluctance and annoyance flashed across her face.
Yan Shuang sighed softly, resignedly preparing to stand up.
"I'm going back now, brother-in-law," she said softly, straightening her slightly disheveled skirt as she prepared to return to the banquet alone.
The glass door of the terrace reflected Zhou Yaqin's figure as she frowned and looked around.
Shangqiu Zhu suddenly spoke up, "Trying to sneak away?"
Yan Shuang looked up and slightly widened her eyes.
"What?" Her voice was filled with genuine surprise.
Shangqiu Zhu remained expressionless: "Just cooperate."
Yan Shuang's eyelashes blinked twice quickly.
In the distance, Zhou Yaqin's voice grew closer: "Where did that girl run off to again?"
Before she could react, Shangqiu Zhu had already strode towards the center of the banquet hall.
Yan Shuang blinked and quickly followed in his footsteps.
"I apologize for interrupting everyone." Shang Qiuzhu's voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for the guests at the surrounding tables to hear clearly.
He frowned slightly, looking like he had encountered a tricky business matter. "I just received a call; there's been a problem with the Singapore project."
Yan You was chatting with several socialites while holding a glass of champagne when she heard this and immediately turned around: "Brother Qiu Zhu? What's wrong?"
Her brows furrowed slightly, and her fingers gripped Shangqiu Zhu's sleeve.
Shangqiu Zhu patted Yan You's hand reassuringly, the gesture gentle but lacking warmth: "Our partner in Singapore suddenly changed the terms, and we need to deal with it immediately."
He turned to Yan's parents and nodded slightly, "Uncle and Aunt, I'm so sorry."
Yan Shuang stood beside him and added at the opportune moment, "President Shang, the legal department is already online and waiting."
Yan You's gaze darted back and forth between her sister and fiancé, her lips slightly downturned: "Now? But we haven't even..."
"Work is important." Yan Zhenye interrupted his daughter, his face full of understanding smiles. "Qiu Zhu is a responsible person, and that's the kind of son-in-law my Yan family values."
He patted Shangqiu Zhu on the shoulder meaningfully.
Yan You's red lips parted slightly, her eyes revealing dissatisfaction, "Do we really have to go now? I can go with you..."
"It involves confidentiality clauses." Shang Qiuzhu glanced down at his watch, his face full of impatience.
"Then...come back soon."
Shangqiu Zhu nodded and turned to walk towards the door.
Yan Shuang quickly followed, her posture respectful.
Just like a real secretary.
