Chapter 14.14 Pei Duo reveals the secret to Jiang Ninghui...
Jiang Ninghui prepared lunch and went outside the courtyard to see if she could wait for Young Master Pei. Unexpectedly, she actually did wait for him.
As the young man approached, she asked softly, "Young Master Pei, school's over, where have you been?"
Pei Duo looked down at her, his eyes as cold and aloof as ever: "I ran into an acquaintance on the way and we chatted for a bit."
Jiang Ninghui, unsuspecting, entered with Pei Duo one after the other.
Zhao Zhixue had missed a morning of classes and had been reading in his room since he got back. He only closed his book when Jiang Ninghui called him to eat. When he came out and saw Pei Duo, he was taken aback: "Brother Pei, you just came back from school?"
When he left, Pei Di was still in school.
Pei Duo: "A friend came to Qingping Town to visit me, and we spent some time together in a teahouse."
Jiang Ninghui, who was in the kitchen, listened to their conversation, keeping her head down and remaining silent.
It turned out that the young master was unaware that Young Master Pei had come out to look for her.
I thought of what Liang Wentao said: "This place is extremely secluded. Even if Young Master Pei turns Qingping Town upside down, he still won't be able to find her."
But Young Master Pei came looking for him.
He rescued her from dire straits when she was in danger.
After lunch, Zhao Zhixue instructed Jiang Ninghui, "Wife, we will be going back to the countryside the day after tomorrow. Try not to go out these next two days. If you are bored, talk to Sister Mu next door."
Jiang Ninghui lowered her head and drank her porridge, replying, "I understand."
Zhao Zhixue stood up: "Brother Pei, shall we go now?"
Pei Duo: "I have some personal matters to attend to. If Brother Zhao is in a hurry, you can go to the school first."
Zhao Zhixue didn't stand on ceremony either.
He missed some classes in the morning and wanted to make up for it in the afternoon.
Pei Di is a prodigy; he can skip a day or two of class without any problem, but he can't.
Jiang Ninghui ate very slowly today.
Although she was out of danger, she had not yet fully recovered from the fright she had experienced that morning.
Although her life at home was difficult from childhood to adulthood, she had never suffered such terrible torment. She still felt a chill when she thought about Liang Wentao's cold and venomous eyes, and the way those three burly men looked at her, as if they wanted to tear her to pieces.
Suddenly, an oil paper package appeared in front of her. Jiang Ninghui was stunned for a moment, and when she looked up, she saw Young Master Pei withdraw his hand.
She looked at him, puzzled.
Pei Duo's gaze fell on the woman's slightly pale face: "A friend gave me some pastries, but I don't like sweets, so please eat them, sister-in-law."
Jiang Ninghui glanced at the oil paper package on the table, her fingers tightening around her chopsticks, and finally asked the question that had been on her mind: "Young Master Pei, how did you find me?"
Pei Duo: "My sister-in-law rarely goes out when she comes to town, and she has never made enemies with anyone except Liang Wentao, who has ill intentions towards you. I guessed that your disappearance was related to him, so I went to investigate around the restaurant."
Jiang Ninghui's heart skipped a beat, and a bittersweet feeling welled up inside her.
She never expected that the person who understood her best was not her husband, but his good friend, Young Master Pei.
She wanted to laugh, but couldn't, and was afraid that the burning tears in her eyes would spill over.
So he lowered his head and casually asked, "How did Young Master Pei know I was in the cellar?"
The young man's dark pupils were fixed on Jiang Ninghui, who had lowered her head, and there was a hint of meaning in his eyes: "I have had excellent hearing since I was a child. I can hear any movement within a hundred feet, even if the sound is very faint, if I concentrate."
Wh...what?
Young Master Pei could hear the slightest sound within a hundred feet if he concentrated!
Then, separated by that wall, wouldn't Young Master Pei have heard all the shameful sounds she made while sharing a room with her husband?
In an instant, Jiang Ninghui felt as if she had been rolled in fire from head to toe, burning intensely.
Thinking back to those nights she spent in the same room with her husband, he deliberately acted fiercely, forcing her to open her mouth and make a sound.
The shameful sounds of impact and the extremely low moans...
Jiang Ninghui stood up abruptly, her cheeks flushed red: "Young Master Pei, please continue eating. I'll go back to my room first."
After saying that, she hurriedly rushed back into the house, closed the door, and shut herself in the small room, feeling ashamed and embarrassed.
There was no coal burning in the house, and it was ice cold.
Jiang Ninghui seemed oblivious to the cold at that moment. She stood there blankly against the door until she heard the young man's cold and indifferent voice from outside.
"Sister-in-law, I'm going to school."
Jiang Ninghui hesitated for a moment before replying, "Mm."
Pei Duo walked out of the courtyard and closed the gate behind him.
As the young man turned to leave, a rare smile flickered across his usually stern face.
Jiang Ninghui stayed in the house for a while before going to the kitchen. She found that the pots and pans in the kitchen had been washed clean. On the warm stove was a plate of pastries, three pieces of which were exquisite pastries she had never seen before. The pastries were petal-shaped, green on the outside and red in the middle.
She picked up a piece of pastry, smelled its sweet aroma, took a small bite, and felt the soft, fluffy texture spread between her lips and teeth.
Jiang Ninghui's eyes immediately welled up with tears.
This was the best food she had ever eaten in her more than ten years of life.
Young Master Pei is truly an exceptionally good person; he is the best male doctor she has ever met.
She wondered which lucky young lady would marry Young Master Pei in the future. She wanted to work hard to save some money so that she could present Young Master Pei with a wedding gift of her own when he got married.
May Young Master Pei and his wife enjoy a long and loving marriage.
After today's dangerous incident, Jiang Ninghui has stayed at home for the past two days and has not gone out.
She went to Young Master Pei's room four times a day to add charcoal to the brazier. The room was very warm, and every time she burned charcoal, she would shamelessly linger inside to enjoy the warmth.
Jiang Ninghui suddenly felt that this winter didn't seem so unbearable after all.
On her day off, Jiang Ninghui got up early to make breakfast. She was going home for two and a half days this time, so she didn't need to bring too much stuff, just two changes of underwear. She and her husband had agreed last night that after breakfast, they would walk back with Young Master Pei.
No sooner had they finished breakfast than they heard the sound of horses' hooves outside.
Jiang Ninghui peeked out of the courtyard and saw the same driver from last time.
The coachman entered and respectfully bowed to Pei Duo: "Young Master Pei, when shall we depart?"
Pei Duo: "A quarter of an hour later."
The driver smiled and said, "Then I'll wait for you all outside."
Pei Duo turned around, his gaze sweeping over the busy figures in the kitchen, and looked at Zhao Zhixue: "Brother Zhao, let's go together in a quarter of an hour."
Zhao Zhixue was not keen on riding in Pei Duo's carriage.
If the villagers saw this, they would privately compare him to Pei Duo.
According to them, he was four years older than Pei Duo, but inferior to him in every way. Just as he was thinking of refusing, he heard Pei Duo say, "I have circled a few key points in the book, which may be mentioned in next year's provincial examination. Since I have nothing to do in the carriage, I might as well chat with Brother Zhao for a while."
Zhao Zhixue cupped his hands in greeting: "In that case, my wife and I will shamelessly benefit from Brother Pei's generosity."
Jiang Ninghui finished packing in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, then boarded the carriage with her small bundle in her arms.
Young Master Pei sat in the middle, she sat to Pei Duo's left, and the young master sat to Pei Duo's right.
Today's carriage was different from the previous two. Inside the carriage was a small square table with tea and two plates of snacks. The snacks were of a different kind that she had never seen before. Jiang Ninghui glanced at the beautiful design and thought that she would try to make them later.
Pei Duo and Zhao Zhixue were discussing two books.
Most of the time, the young master would ask several questions, and then Young Master Pei would offer a hint.
Seeing her husband so earnest, Jiang Ninghui prayed once again in her heart, hoping that he would pass the provincial examination next year.
Otherwise, her good days will be over.
"Sister-in-law, if you're bored, have some snacks and tea to cheer yourself up."
Jiang Ninghui was about to wave her hand and refuse when she heard Young Master Pei say, "This came with the carriage and cannot be taken away. It would be a waste not to eat it."
Zhao Zhixue looked up from his book, suddenly enlightened by Pei Duo's few words of advice. He smiled at Jiang Ninghui and said in a very gentle tone, "Wife, these pastries look exquisite. You've never eaten them before. Take this opportunity to try them, or you'll miss out."
Jiang Ninghui didn't dare tell her husband that she had tried it a couple of days ago.
She nodded gently: "Thank you, Young Master Pei."
The carriage ride from town back to the village took an hour. There were ten pastries on two plates. Jiang Ninghui tasted one of each and then felt embarrassed to eat any more.
Knowing they were returning today, both the Pei and Zhao families waited at the door.
The Pei couple and their son, Pei Gongzi.
The Zhao couple were waiting for their husband.
Jiang Ninghui was already used to no one waiting for her. After getting off the carriage, she called out to Uncle Pei and Aunt Xie, and then followed her husband to the Zhao family's gate, obediently saying, "Father, Mother, we're back."
Neither Zhao's father nor Li paid any attention to her; instead, they surrounded Zhao Zhixue, showering him with concern and care.
Zhao Zhixue smiled and told the elderly couple about his experiences in town over the past few months. The three of them were very happy together, and Jiang Ninghui seemed to have become the superfluous one.
Pei Duo exchanged a few words with his father, and before entering the house, he glanced at the lone figure carrying a bundle and bowing his head as he entered the Zhao family home. The three members of the Zhao family were still chatting happily outside.
Xie hadn't seen Duoge'er for three months, so she chatted with him for a while. Her beautiful and gentle eyes were full of smiles.
Pei's father laughed and said, "Duo-ge'er, I've never seen your mother smile so happily when you're not around."
Madam Xie chuckled and patted Pei's father's arm: "You talk too much."
The three entered the house, where a charcoal fire was burning, filling the room with warmth.
Xie was sensitive to the cold, so in winter, the house had to be heated as warmly as in spring. Pei's father, regardless of the season, wore only thin clothes. Soon after the father and son entered the house, their foreheads were covered with a thin layer of sweat.
When Xie saw this, she was a little puzzled: "Duo'er, in your letter you asked your father to pack more coal, saying that you are afraid of the cold this year, how come you started sweating so soon after entering the house?"
Pei's father also glanced at him and clicked his tongue: "What's wrong with you, kid? Why are you so hot and cold all the time?"
Pei Duo paused slightly in the hand holding the porcelain teacup, his thin eyelids drooping down onto the teacup.
A pair of bright, watery eyes seemed to be reflected in the tea.
It's damp.
They look so pitiful.
