Qiao Yu nodded.
That's the good thing about teaching adults to read.
She wrote this line of words on the wall. The room was wide and there was not much furniture. She would not walk close to the wall. The words were written there and would remain there for a long time unless someone intentionally erased them.
Qiao Yu said, "I've been in the tribe all this time. When you feel you can recognize all the characters, come find me. I'll test you. If you can recognize them all, I'll teach you how to write them. Then we can write new characters."
After a pause, she asked, "Can you use a stone axe or a bone knife to carve wood?"
This job is simple, and Ming is not a weak person.
He nodded: "Of course."
"Then while you're learning to read, make all the wooden boards. Make as many as there are team leaders, and make them all about the same length and size. Once you're done, I'll use bone spurs to carve the team leader's name on them. That'll be their assessment plaque."
"Okay, okay." Ming was more excited than ever because he had something to do and a goal to strive for in life. He couldn't wait to start doing things.
"From today on, I will tell the people who distribute the meat to give you an extra piece of meat. If you learn to read faster than others and can take on the job of literacy teacher, you will get even more meat." Qiao Yu said.
"The principle in the tribe has always been to reward you for your work. The more you do, the more supplies you'll get. Ming, I don't know what you're capable of, so don't just sit there and wait for me to assign things to you. Find something to do yourself. If there's anything you want to do and can do, tell me. I'll assign it to you if I think it's necessary."
After Qiao Yu said that, Ming simply brought up the Fire Hall assignment: "Do you think I could go and guard the Fire Hall? It's not something I have to do anyway, and it won't interfere with my literacy, assessments, and teaching the children to read."
Qiao Yu didn't say yes or no, but simply said, "The total amount of supplies provided to each location is the same. I'm giving that much meat to the Huotang post. If one more person goes in, everyone will have less work to do, and naturally, less meat will be distributed. If they agree to your inclusion, I have no objection. You can go ask Huo and the other two people."
With the two tasks of assessment and teaching literacy in mind, Ming was no longer so anxious about the job of guarding the Fire Hall.
He nodded nonchalantly, "Okay, I'll ask."
Qiao Yu stood up and said, "I'm going to be busy. If you have any questions, come to me. If you can't find me, you can also go to my father. I go to his house for dinner every day, and he will pass on your words to me."
"Yeah, okay."
When Qiao Yu came out of Ming's house and passed by Huo's house, he paused, took a look at it, and went straight to where the carpentry team was working.
As soon as Yan saw her coming, he quickly put down his tools and asked, "Yu, my father has repeatedly told us to finish building your little house. Tell me how you think it should be done so we can find time to start it."
The carpentry team had been supplemented by some members from the Shanyin tribe, and now numbered thirty-five. She could leave some to work on the doors, windows, and roof beams, and assign a few more to help her build the second floor. It shouldn't be a problem.
Qiao Yu said, "Okay. But first, send me two smart and skilled people. I need to make something."
Yan called two people over.
Qiao Yu explained the principle of the bellows and drew a picture for them: "You two should make one together and see how it works. If there is no problem, you can make a second one."
The two nodded.
Yan said, "We have ready-made wooden boards. They will be ready soon."
"That's good." Qiao Yu said to the two people, "Please."
One of these two people was from the original Valley Tribe, and the other was from the Giant Stone Tribe. Although the one from the original Valley Tribe had watched Qiao Yu grow up, Qiao Yu had been tough since he became the leader, especially when dealing with Hui and Heiye. His attitude and methods had made many people in the tribe feel in awe.
So, although the two didn't know what "please" meant, Qiao Yu's polite attitude and smile were so overwhelming that not only the man from the Stone Tribe, but also the man from the Valley Tribe, seemed flattered. The two smiled back at her and went to select wood planks to make the bellows.
Qiao Yu then said to Yan, "Then see how many people you can spare to build the small building. I will take you there now and tell you how to do it."
Yan called fourteen people, including himself, a total of fifteen people, and followed Qiao Yu to the leader's small building on the top of the mountain.
Qiao Yu told them the method and watched them do it for a while. After feeling that there was no problem, he went to take a look at the fortifications and found Liu Shui to ask him to investigate Zuo's incident.
Then she returned to the carpentry team and instructed the two men to make the bellows and take them to the stone grinding workshop.
The tribe was most in need of tools, so her first task was to forge some ironware, starting with axes, planes, hoes, and shovels. She would also forge some arrowheads for the hunting team to test.
That night, she taught the first person to come. Man, Liushui and all the elders came to listen to the class.
The first thing she taught everyone was to recognize and write their own names. Then she taught them numbers, starting with learning to count from one to fifty, and then writing the Arabic numerals from one to ten.
After class, Hui stayed and told Qiao Yu the news he had heard again.
The news was not much different from what he had first heard, except that there were more details.
After Hui left, Liushui, who had stayed nearby, caught up with Qiao Yu and told him the news he had heard.
The situation is roughly consistent with what Hui said.
"Let's go, we'll talk while walking." Qiao Yu said.
As the two of them walked towards the chief's small building on the top of the mountain, Qiao Yu said, "Before, the tribe was full of things to do, and I left in a hurry, so I didn't assign you and Man any specific work. I think we should share some of it now."
As she spoke, she glanced around and her eyes met Man, who was standing on the road in a daze with his head down. She called out to him, "Man."
After Qiao Yu revealed Zuo's situation, Man had been inquiring about it today and discovered that things were definitely serious. The members of Team Five were resentful, and he felt deeply that he had failed to manage the tribe well. Thinking back on what he had said to Qiao Yu that morning, he felt even more uneasy. He wanted to explain things to Qiao Yu, but with the situation in front of him and the pressure behind him, Man was unable to move forward.
Seeing Liu Shui chatting happily with Qiao Yu, he felt a surge of trepidation. He was worried that Qiao Yu would think he was incompetent and use Liu Shui instead. Therefore, his steps toward Qiao Yu felt like they weighed a thousand pounds, and he hesitated to move forward.
Seeing Qiao Yu calling him, he felt relieved and ran forward quickly: "Yu."
"Let's go to my place and have a good talk." Qiao Yu said.
