Chapter 33: Setting a Trap

Their team's fighting power wasn't great, and the western mountains they were heading to weren't very dangerous, but the rewards weren't great either. Furthermore, capturing animals alive was difficult. If they could also set traps, their gains would surely be much greater than they had been these past two days, and much easier.

After hearing Cang's words, not only the third team, but also the second team looked at Qiao Yu with anticipation.

Qiao Yu smiled and said, "Of course you can. Tonight, I will teach you how to set traps. After dinner, everyone come to the open space."

"Oh, that's great." Everyone shouted happily.

At this time, the prey of the first team had been distributed to each family. The women had already returned and started to grill meat by the fire. The aroma of barbecue filled the tribe.

After dinner, everyone went to the open space without being called. Someone even lit a blazing fire, making the open space as bright as day.

Qiao Yu stood in the middle of the crowd and talked about the traps she had set yesterday and the rich harvest today. She also repeated what she had said to the first hunting team about the importance of learning.

There were no entertainment activities in this era, but people needed spiritual food. She said these things in a simple and easy-to-understand way, and when she talked about traps and snares, she kept giving examples. Not only the hunting team listened attentively, but also the women and children listened with great interest.

After Qiao Yu finished speaking, the three members of the hunting team surrounded her and asked her many questions. It was not until late at night that everyone dispersed.

When Qiao Yu returned to the cave, Shan was still awake. He waited for her to come back and praised her: "Yu, you did a great job."

Qiao Yu also has something to say to him.

"Actually, I want everyone in the tribe to study like this every night. You can talk to the elders about some hunting precautions, and the witch can also tell them what to do if they get injured, or what to do if a child eats something poisonous in the wild. By constantly studying like this, the people in the tribe will become smarter, and our tribe will grow stronger."

Qiao Yufu had this idea as soon as he crossed over. It was just that the timing wasn't right. The people in the tribe couldn't even get enough to eat, and were about to starve to death during the winter. How could they have the heart to listen to such talk?

She had originally planned to wait until winter, when everyone was free, to bring up the topic. Unexpectedly, the trapping and snare-setting activities had sparked a strong interest in learning about traps, so she took the opportunity to bring it up.

Shan's brow furrowed slightly.

"Let me think about it and discuss it with the elders," he said.

Qiao Yu nodded: "Okay. It's late, go to sleep, Father."

The next day, Qiao Yu led the first hunting team to set out again. They left the tribe, found the wooden shovel hidden in the woods last night, and headed straight for the trap site.

This time, with experience, they went to the farthest place first, planning to collect it all the way back, so that they didn't have to worry about whether to carry the prey forward or send it back to the tribe.

Yesterday's catch was huge, and with Qiao Yu's on-site instruction, everyone was enthusiastic about learning how to set traps, so we set a lot of traps yesterday. Although some of the prey escaped due to poor quality, today's catch was still a third more than yesterday's.

Everyone was very excited and kept asking along the way: "Yu, where do we dig the pit?"

Qiao Yu stopped and said, "Let's do it here."

Considering that digging a trap would yield a larger harvest, and that too much prey would be difficult to carry back, she chose a location close to the tribe. However, for safety reasons, she couldn't place it too close, lest anyone in the tribe accidentally fall in. So, she chose the location on the west slope of the second hill.

Dig a big hole, insert thorns and sharp branches into the bottom of the hole, cover it with something to camouflage it, and a trap is ready.

"When setting this kind of trap, you must be careful and never set it in a place where people pass by. If someone falls into it, they will lose half their life if not die, and that will harm them. So you must be extremely careful." Qiao Yu warned.

Everyone nodded to indicate that they remembered it.

Some people didn't care: "No one else comes here except us."

Qiao Yu looked at him seriously. "If we don't come this year, what about next year? What if it's too cold in winter and we don't go up the mountain? And next spring, we forget about it and end up falling in here?"

Everyone looked at the sharp branches at the bottom of the pit, imagined themselves falling in, and being pierced through by the branches. They couldn't help but shudder and began to take it seriously.

"What should we do then?" someone asked.

"Make a mark." Qiao Yu said.

She took out four vines and handed them to everyone: "Find a tree on each of the four sides of the pit and tie the vines to them."

Qiao Yu didn't recognize this vine, but he knew it was often used as rope by the tribe because of its softness and toughness. Qiao Yu had been up the mountain looking for food the other day, and after carefully observing the plants, he discovered that this vine was only found near the tribe, not on the mountain itself.

Best of all, this vine doesn't rot easily. Once tied to a tree, it will still be there next autumn, making it a perfect place for marking.

After setting this trap, everyone set another one by the river before returning to the tribe.

Because they had to set traps and dig pits, and caught a lot of prey, by the time they returned to the tribe, it was already evening, which was later than the previous two days.

As a result, the second and third teams had not returned yet.

"Will they be okay?" Qiao Yu was a little worried.

"No," Shan comforted her. "Cang and Man are both cautious and steady. They know that the dangers in the mountains after dark are several times greater than during the day, so they won't let you come back too late. Didn't you come back later than usual? I guess they've become addicted to setting traps, so they're here later than usual."

Qiao Yu nodded.

Sure enough, before dark, both teams returned. They didn't hunt as many prey today as they did yesterday, but everyone was full of anticipation for the effectiveness of the traps, not the slightest bit of frustration.

Everyone was amazed at the prey brought back by the first team and looked forward to tomorrow's harvest even more.

Keeping in mind the trap they dug yesterday, the first team still got up early and gathered in the open space before dawn.

As a result, the second and third teams arrived just as early as them.

Everyone looked at each other and started laughing.

The urgency is the same.

As soon as each team is assembled, they set off and head in the direction of their own team.
