Chapter 45
The battle between Dante and Shelley was almost a one-sided massacre, just like Shelley's previous battles with Vladimir and Romain Rolland.
What's different this time is that while Vladimir and Romain Rolland were crushed last time, Shelley is the one being crushed this time.
Dante merely swung his arm, which was already piercing Shelley's chest, and Shelley's entire body was reduced to ashes. The severed arm fell to the ground, but the still-active nerves caused it to swing a few more times, smashing several craters into the ground.
Finally realizing he had been attacked, Shelley tried to grab Dante's hand with his intact arm. But instead, the hand Shelley was trying to use to grab Dante vanished in an instant.
This failed counterattack was still somewhat effective, at least making Shelley realize the vast difference in fighting ability between himself and Dante.
When Dante pierced Shelley's chest, he didn't attack from the very center. Therefore, Shelley's spine was undamaged, and he can still control his legs.
Dragging her battered body, another massive impact occurred between the ground and Shelley, sending her flying backward.
—To avoid being intercepted by the few remaining strange creatures, Shelley did not rush upwards this time, but flew backwards at an angle of almost forty-five degrees.
Seemingly, Dante also felt that Shelley's vitality was a bit exaggerated. Ashes once again flew up from beneath Dante's feet, propelling him toward the flying Shelley, while a ring of ash also swirled around his right hand, which he used to attack.
With a flick of his wrist, he destroyed one of Shelley's legs, taking advantage of Shelley's loss of balance as he plummeted towards the ground. This time, Dante aimed for Shelley's head.
Dante's idea was simple—no matter how strong the vitality, it would stop after the head was destroyed, right?
Barry, who was watching intently from the sky, noticed Dante's intention and suddenly shouted out.
"Strike the spine!"
Dante paused his arm, which was originally aimed at Shelley's head, and changed course to strike Shelley's spine.
It was an ordinary strike, and Shelley landed quickly.
It was just that it landed in two parts.
Blown into the air by Barry, Don Quixote stared blankly at the battle that could only be described as an overwhelming victory. After a long while, he finally spoke: "Such power, how terrifying..."
“If Don Quixote had gone up there, he probably could have escaped. Dante is much slower than you.” Barry, who was also watching this scene, was no less shocked than Don Quixote. “Although I’ve always known that Dante is strong… this is the first time I’ve seen Dante’s fighting power so directly.”
Below Barry and Don Quixote, Romain Rolland, having confirmed the end of the battle, rose from the ground carrying Pu Songling and Vladimir in each hand.
Pu Songling and Vladimir were equally dumbfounded, and even Romain Rolland was no better off.
This time, it was Vladimir who broke the silence first.
"I suddenly feel like God is unfair! I want this kind of superpower too!" Vladimir, who was being carried because of his height after Romain Rolland rose above the ground, suddenly swayed. "Why can't my 'Lolita' do this?!"
Romain Rolland, carrying Vladimir, rolled his eyes, bent down and put the still-swaying Vladimir on the ground. "Dante couldn't even transport large quantities of supplies, how can you compare to that?"
Vladimir started acting unreasonably, "Then how about I switch with him!"
No one around him paid any attention to Vladimir.
Dante was squatting on the ground, watching Shelley's limbs continue to regenerate. Every now and then, he would reach out and scratch the parts of Shelley's body that were regenerating, destroying the parts that were almost fully regenerated once again.
Beneath his feet, the ground in contact with him was constantly turning to ash, causing Dante to sink deeper and deeper. Yet Dante made no move to shift his position.
So the UN members standing around silently watched Dante sink deeper and deeper, occasionally reaching out to make a couple of cuts on the corpse (which looked like it) that was barely left with only its head and chest, surrounded by burnt ashes.
Vladimir: "...Okay, I don't want this ability anymore. It's called 'Divine Comedy,' but when I use it, it looks like a cult performance."
Romain Rolland: "Dante, would you mind switching positions a little?"
Don Quixote, however, was still staring at the ashes at Dante's feet, which were clearly armor. But he expressed a hint of confusion: "What kind of magic is this? How can it have such power?"
Pu Songling, who was writing something with his head down, suddenly looked up at Don Quixote upon hearing this, and then said with a sudden realization, "Right, he introduced himself as Cervantes, you don't know him, Don Quixote."
"Dante's special ability is 'Divine Comedy,' which instantly incinerates everything he touches, like paper."
Everything, regardless of its material, will immediately begin to burn once Dante touches it, and... anything ignited by Dante is not much harder to ignite than a piece of rice paper.
Because of the influence of the supernatural ability, the burning is quite thorough. Even very thick materials will not leave much ember after burning. However, these embers will retain some of the properties of the "Divine Melody," and if they come into contact with other materials within a certain period of time, they will be able to be "re-ignited."
The sheer destructive power inherent in this supernatural ability, combined with the nature of "secondary ignition," results in a terrifying level of destruction.
Incidentally, the three most lethal figures within the UN are Dante, Shelley, and Christie.
Now, just as the UN members were watching Dante's cult scene, Christie, who was slowly walking towards them, finally arrived.
When she was some distance from Dante, Christie stopped and took out a handkerchief to wipe the cold sweat from her forehead.
Barry used his eyes to gauge the distance between the Nautilus and this point—well, probably only about two hundred meters.
"Christie's physical condition is still as poor as ever."
Don Quixote poked Barry, who was flying in the air, with his lance. "Don't stab people where it hurts!"
“It’s alright.” Christie put away her handkerchief. “It’s a fact that my health is not good, and that’s undeniable.”
The essence of "No One Survives" is the creation of a death-inducing supernatural ability within the body. Therefore, Christie naturally also possesses a large amount of "No One Survives" within her body.
However, "no one survives" is an uncontrollable killing of all living things, including... even probiotics.
Based on the examination results, all the doctors who handled the case reached a consensus:
"It's a miracle that Christie can still live a normal life."
Therefore, no one tried to treat Christie's condition, and Christie could not turn off her passive ability, "No One Survived," on her own.
Fortunately, the superpower bearing the name "No One Survives" isn't serious enough to kill its own owner.
However, problems still exist, such as Christie's surprisingly poor physical condition.
Taking a deep breath, Christie looked again at Shelley, who was being pinned to the ground by Dante.
"Alright, Aligieri, it's my turn to take over now."
Dante, who had been waving, readily retreated, turning a large section of the ground to ashes as he had already sunk quite a bit.
Slightly speechless as she watched Dante continue to wreak havoc, Christie stepped forward and looked at Shelley, whose body was gradually recovering.
Because of the direction they came from, Christie was now standing directly above Shelley, so Shelley could see Christie approaching without having to look up.
Christie looked at Shelley, and Shelley looked back at Christie.
Even after experiencing such a battle, Shelley's expression remained remarkably calm, so calm that it seemed as if nothing had actually happened.
It seems that she had just finished a walk with Stevenson, rather than the end of a life-or-death battle.
Looking at Shelley like this, Christie sighed helplessly.
"Sorry, go to sleep."
As she spoke, Christie gently placed her hand on Shelley's forehead.
Only through this direct contact was it truly a case of (no one survived).
