Chapter 130 The Orient Express
On the east side of the building where Atsushi Nakajima was located, Christie stepped through the door and looked around.
There were no weapons in sight to the left or right, so it seemed like this place was undefended.
Even if the situation was misjudged, shouldn't the other side at least have left one or two weapons just in case? Or is Holmes just that confident in his judgment?
With a slight sense of doubt, Christie continued to walk calmly down the corridor, glancing around warily.
After advancing a distance of more than ten meters, Christie suddenly stopped.
A huge crack appeared in the wall to her left, and a dark gun barrel was pointed at her from there.
"Good day, Christie, as you probably didn't expect there to be a natural gap here that I could use." Holmes' voice came from the loudspeaker above Christie's head. "If any equipment had been brought here, you would have noticed, wouldn't you? It's a pity that the gap is natural, but it just allows me to start a dramatic show."
Such completely random events cannot be predicted in advance.
“I’m starting to doubt the quality of construction in Yokohama.” Christie remained calm despite the gun being pointed at her, even turning to examine the gun for a moment, while speaking to Holmes, “Are you sure I’m real?”
“Indeed, this puzzle is quite good. Christie, you even prepared more than one misleading option.” Holmes’s voice carried a slight hint of pride. “At first, I was indeed quite distracted by this misleading option. But fortunately, I realized it very quickly.”
"So, I adjusted my whole approach and decided to try a different solution."
Holmes paused at this point.
"Wait a minute, the fighting has already started on the other side... Christie, the distractor you prepared wasn't actually 'Romain Rolland's imitation of the movements is different from Christie's,' but rather 'Romain Rolland's imitation is confirmed,' right?"
The so-called "urgency" or "restraint" in the actions of both sides were nothing but a smokescreen; Christie knew from the beginning that this level of concealment would not work. But she wanted to use it to give Holmes another hint.
That is, "Romain Rolland's 'Lives of Great Men' has a flaw in its imitation," which is to give Holmes this kind of illusion.
In this way, Holmes, having seen through the "fast and slow" trap, would subconsciously focus his attention on finding the differences between the two sides.
Christie, confident in Romain Rolland's ability to mimic, was certain that Holmes wouldn't be able to discover anything from this angle either.
"So, I simply re-examined the two of you, assuming that 'Romain Rolland's imitations are flawless,' and discovered a small problem."
Holmes chuckled softly: "It's really a very small problem, just a little shiver that someone who's always been in a warm room will involuntarily shiver a couple of times when they come into a cold environment."
"Even if Romain Rolland was an excellent imitator, he couldn't possibly replicate the environment you're in, could he?"
Christie was often unwell, so she had to be careful to keep warm before coming from the Nautilus.
A fatal error here is that the normal environment Romain Rolland was in was definitely different from the temperature Christie, who always paid attention to keeping warm; he perfectly imitated Christie. However, the objective environment does not change simply by imitating.
Therefore, even though Romain Rolland, who was always in a low-temperature environment, imitated Christie, he was more composed when facing cold winds than Christie was in a warmer environment.
For Sherlock Holmes, such a slight error was enough for him to make a judgment.
Christie, who had been listening quietly to Holmes explain his reasoning process, sighed and clapped softly: "Indeed, as always, your observational skills are as amazing as Holmes'."
“You flatter me, Christie, that is indeed a fine riddle.” A rustling sound of fabric came from Holmes’s side, as if he were removing his hat in greeting. “Then, Ms. Christie, please stay where you are; someone will be here to arrest you soon.”
Christie tilted her head slightly: "Not yet, Holmes."
Holmes paused, then asked, "What?"
"You haven't solved all the mysteries yet, how can you expect the criminal to willingly surrender?"
"Not over yet?" Although Christie couldn't see Holmes' expression, she was sure he was frowning. "My reasoning should be quite comprehensive by now."
"That's right, your current reasoning, based on the existing intelligence, has already confirmed everything."
Christie gave a smug smile: "But Holmes, there's a fatal flaw in your reasoning."
Holmes's smile froze, a sudden sense of foreboding washing over him: "What?"
“Because of you, there was a fatal lack of intelligence.” “Christie” standing in front of the monitor smiled. “And Holmes, your absolute confidence in your reasoning made you forget to consider some more dramatic possibilities.”
Christie took two steps forward, gripped the muzzle of the gun with one hand, and gently pulled the trigger with the other.
To Holmes' astonishment, "Christie" watched her hand being struck by a bullet without flinching, showing no sign of pain.
Even the sounds that came out were not the sounds of flesh and blood being hit.
Just as if to prove that his special abilities meant that firearms could no longer threaten him, Christie did not continue after firing a single shot, but instead took two steps back and returned to the area below the broadcast.
"For example, I don't think anyone has ever said that Romain Rolland can only have one biography, right?"
"But the other two people in his personality are both powerless..." Holmes said, then suddenly realized, "The biography can grant him superpowers, but it doesn't need to describe someone who also has superpowers!"
“That’s right. Romain Rolland’s [Biography] effect is actually ‘gaining an additional superpower by imitating a person’s life in real life,’ not just those who write about superpowers can gain superpowers.” Standing here, “Christie” raised her hand, revealing the palm that had just been hit.
The area that was hit was not covered in blood, but rather revealed a broken piece of stone.
"Your fatal mistake was that you didn't know Romain Rolland had another special ability called 'David'."
