Chapter 174: "The Figure in the Mist"

Figure in the Mist

Lin Yu and Su Na stared nervously at the figure in the mist, unblinking, not daring to breathe. The fog thickened around them, as if isolating them from the rest of the world, leaving only the mysterious figure looming ahead. Lin Yu's heartbeat was like a rapid drumbeat, each one pounding heavily on his chest. His hands unconsciously tightened around his sword, his knuckles turning white from the strain.

"Who are you?" Lin Yu asked loudly again. His voice echoed in the fog, but it seemed to be swallowed by the thick fog, so weak and hollow. His throat was tight, and there was a subtle tremor in his voice. Although he tried to remain calm, the fear in his heart was still with him.

The figure remained silent, only slowly approaching them. Every step felt like a tread on their hearts, causing their breathing to quicken. The figure moved through the mist, appearing and disappearing, as elusive as a ghost.

Su Na held Lin Yu's arm tightly, her nails almost digging into his flesh. Her body kept shaking, and she said in a trembling voice, "Lin Yu, I'm scared." Her eyes were full of fear and helplessness, as if she would be swallowed by this endless fear in the next second.

Lin Yu sensed Suna's fear. He suppressed his inner panic and comforted her, "Don't be afraid, I'm here." His voice was firm, but his heart was filled with anxiety and doubt. He didn't know whether this sudden figure was friend or foe, nor did he know what would happen next.

Finally, a figure approached them. It was a gaunt, elderly man, his face covered in deep wrinkles, like the furrows of time. His eyes, sunken in their sockets, held a mysterious and weathered expression, as if he had endured countless trials and tribulations. His hair was gray and tangled, and his clothes were tattered, stained and dusty.

"Old man, why are you here?" Lin Yu asked doubtfully. He stared at the old man closely, trying to find some clues from his expression and eyes.

The old man glanced at them, a look that seemed to see through their souls. He slowly said, "I've been waiting for you." His voice was low and hoarse, as if coming from far away, carrying an indescribable heaviness.

Lin Yu and Suna looked at each other, confused. They didn't understand why this strange old man said he had been waiting for them. It all seemed so strange and unbelievable.

"Waiting for us? Why?" Lin Yu pressed on. His brows furrowed, his doubts growing deeper.

The old man sighed deeply, a sigh that seemed to contain endless stories and vicissitudes of life. "This is your fate, and it is also my mission. Follow me, I can help you leave here." With that, he turned and walked deeper into the fog.

Lin Yu and Suna hesitated for a moment, their hearts full of contradictions and struggles. On the one hand, they were full of suspicion and vigilance towards this old man who suddenly appeared; on the other hand, they were eager to leave this terrible place.

"Lin Yu, can we trust him?" Su Na asked in a low voice, her eyes closely following the old man's back, her heart full of uneasiness.

Lin Yu pondered for a moment, gritted his teeth and said, "We have no choice but to follow him and give it a try. But we must remain vigilant."

They followed the old man cautiously, each step filled with caution. Mist swirled around them, blurring their vision. The silence was eerie, with only the sound of their footsteps and breathing echoing through the mist.

As he walked, Lin Yu suddenly felt a chill running down his spine. He had a strong feeling that countless pairs of eyes were watching them in the darkness.

"Suna, be careful." Lin Yu said softly.

Su Na nodded, her hands tightly grasping the corner of Lin Yu's clothes, not daring to relax at all.

The old man was walking slowly in front, his figure appearing and disappearing in the fog, making it difficult to understand.

"Old man, how far is it to get out?" Lin Yu couldn't help but ask.

The old man did not answer, but continued walking silently.

Lin Yu and Suna became increasingly nervous. They didn't know how long they would have to walk in the fog, nor did they know what was waiting for them ahead.

Suddenly, a cold wind blew, bringing with it a pungent smell of decay.

"What's that smell?" Suna covered her mouth and nose and said with disgust.

Lin Yu looked around vigilantly, and the uneasiness in his heart became stronger.

Just then, they heard a sinister laugh that echoed in the fog, making it difficult to tell the direction.

"Who is it?" Lin Yu shouted loudly.

The laughter continued, as if mocking their helplessness and fear.

The old man stopped and slowly turned around. "These are the evil spirits here. They won't let you go easily." His voice was particularly eerie in the terrifying atmosphere.

Lin Yu and Suna's faces turned pale in an instant, and their eyes were filled with fear and despair.

"Don't be afraid, as long as you follow me, there is hope." said the old man.

They had no choice but to continue following the old man. But with every step they took, the fear in their hearts grew...
