Chapter 18: Escape

Escape

Lin Yu and the others struggled to crawl through the cramped ventilation duct. The duct was thick with dust, like an invisible veil. Every breath they took felt like they were inhaling countless tiny particles, leaving their throats and noses dry and tingling. In the darkness, the only sounds were their heavy breathing and the rustling of their bodies against the duct.

"Everyone, be careful. Don't make too much noise," Lin Yu said in a low voice, his tone particularly muffled in the cramped space. His heartbeat was pounding, each beat tinged with fear of the unknown and a desperate desire to survive. He crawled forward cautiously, keeping a vigilant eye on what was behind him. Beads of sweat dripped down his face and onto the dusty pipe.

Suna coughed a few times, each one resounding in the silent tunnel. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand, fearing the noise would attract the enemy. "This place is so filthy! I don't know if I can get out safely." Her voice was tinged with tears, filled with fear of the unknown and helplessness at her current predicament. Her clothes were stained by the dust and dirt in the pipes, and her hair was disheveled and stuck to her face, making her look disheveled.

Old Chen panted heavily, his breaths echoing in the pipes like the strain of a bellows. "No matter what, we have to try." His voice, though tired, was filled with determination. He thought of his family and the mission he shouldered; he couldn't afford to fail here.

Suddenly, they heard the mysterious man's shouts and footsteps behind them. The sound was amplified in the ventilation duct, appearing particularly clear and terrifying, like the sound of death ringing in their ears.

"Oh no, they're catching up!" The hooded man's voice was filled with anxiety and fear. His breathing became rapid in an instant, and his body trembled involuntarily.

Lin Yu's heart tightened. "Everyone, hurry up!" he shouted, his voice filled with anxiety and tension. He quickened his pace, his hands and knees rubbing against the rough pipe wall, causing waves of pain, but he ignored it completely. He had only one thought in his mind, which was to escape from here as soon as possible.

They turned left and right in the ventilation duct, and the turns of the duct scraped their bodies from time to time, causing a stinging pain. But they did not dare to stop for a moment, as if an invisible giant hand was chasing them closely from behind.

Finally, they saw a faint light ahead, which seemed so precious in the darkness, as if it was the dawn of life.

"That should be the exit!" Suna said excitedly, her voice full of hope and anticipation. Her eyes were fixed on the ray of light, as if it was the most beautiful thing in the world.

However, when they approached, they found that the exit was blocked by a solid iron fence. The iron fence was rusty, but it still firmly blocked their way.

"Damn it! What should I do?" Old Chen angrily pounded on the iron bars, his fists clashing with them with a dull thud. His eyes were filled with despair and anger, like a wild animal trapped in a cage.

Lin Yu looked around, his eyes searching quickly in the darkness. Suddenly, he found a loose screw next to him. "Maybe we can unscrew it." There was a hint of hope in his voice, as if he had found a ray of light in the darkness.

Everyone worked together, reaching out their hands to try to turn the screw. Suna's fingers trembled with nervousness, Lao Chen's forehead was covered with sweat, and the hooded man gritted his teeth and exerted all his strength.

Finally, with their joint efforts, the screws were removed, and the iron fence made a dull sound and slowly opened.

One by one, they emerged from the vents, their bodies falling heavily to the ground. The air outside was fresh and cool, a stark contrast to the filth inside the vents. But they didn't have time to enjoy this moment of comfort. They quickly stood up and took in their surroundings.

They found themselves in an abandoned yard, surrounded by weeds. The dilapidated buildings swayed in the wind, as if they would collapse at any time. The walls were covered with vines, the window glass was broken, and the whole place was desolate.

“Find a place to hide first,” the hooded man said, his voice low and rapid.

They hurriedly hid in a dilapidated warehouse in the yard. The warehouse was filled with a rotten smell, and there were piles of miscellaneous items and broken tools everywhere.

"What should we do now? We are not out of danger yet." Suna said worriedly, her voice trembling and her body leaning towards Lin Yu involuntarily.

Lin Yu pondered for a moment, his brow furrowed, his mind racing. "We have to find a way back and report the situation here to the organization." His voice was firm and powerful, like a shot of adrenaline in everyone's heart.

Just then, the sound of a car came from outside the warehouse. The sound came from far away, and the roar of the engine was particularly harsh in the silent yard.

"Are they chasing us?" Old Chen nervously clenched the weapon in his hand, his eyes fixed on the door of the warehouse, his body tense, ready to fight at any time.

Lin Yu cautiously walked to the door and peeked out through the crack. His heartbeat instantly accelerated, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead again. The scene outside made his heart tighten. He saw a black SUV parked in the yard, and several mysterious men got out of the car, holding weapons in their hands and looking around.

"Oh no, it's them." Lin Yu whispered. He turned his head and looked at his companions behind him. "Everyone, get ready. Once we are discovered, we will fight them."

A trace of determination flashed in Suna's eyes, "Okay, at worst I'll die with them."

Old Chen gritted his teeth and said, "Let's fight!"

The hooded man took a deep breath and said, "Follow Lin Yu's instructions."

Lin Yu once again observed the situation outside through the crack in the door. The mysterious man's footsteps were getting closer and closer, and his heartbeat was getting faster and faster. Every second seemed to be as long as a century, and his mind was constantly thinking about the response strategy...
