Chapter 2: The Shadow of Changbai Mountain

The Shadow of Changbai Mountain

On the northeastern border of China, Changbai Mountain winds its way like a sleeping dragon, its summit towering into the clouds, capped year-round by snow. This mysterious and majestic mountain boasts not only breathtaking natural landscapes but also countless hidden secrets. Deep within, perpetually shrouded in thick snow and mysterious mist, it remains untouched, akin to a forgotten corner of the world.

At the foot of Changbai Mountain, there are scattered small villages where villagers have lived by farming and hunting for generations. They are filled with both awe and fear for Changbai Mountain. Many ancient and eerie legends circulate here. These stories of mysterious creatures, bizarre phenomena, and inexplicable paranormal events are recounted by the campfire every night, leaving a lasting shadow in the villagers' hearts.

Bureau 749, a specialized agency specializing in supernatural phenomena and mysterious incidents, received a mysterious report claiming a series of bizarre phenomena occurring in a remote corner of Changbai Mountain. Witnesses claimed to have seen an unknown creature, unprecedented in appearance, enormous in stature and elusive in movement. Every night, its eerie howling echoed through the valley, shattering the tranquility.

To uncover the truth and unravel this mysterious incident, Bureau 749 dispatches an elite team to investigate. Lin Yu, a young and intelligent agent with keen insight and extraordinary courage, is appointed team leader. Joining him are the experienced and agile agent Suna and Lao Chen, a specialist in biological research. These three form a formidable team tasked with uncovering the mysteries of Changbai Mountain.

It was already dusk when they arrived at the village at the foot of Changbai Mountain. The setting sun cast a faint orange glow across the snow. A repressive atmosphere permeated the village, with every household tightly shut, as if hiding from something. Lin Yu and his companions' arrival caught the attention of the villagers, who popped their heads out of their windows, gazing at the strangers with curiosity and concern.

An elderly villager, after hesitating for a moment, slowly walked out of his house and came to Lin Yu and the others. His face was full of traces of time, and his eyes revealed deep worry.

"Can you really solve the problem of that monster?" His voice trembled, full of anticipation and fear.

Lin Yu stepped forward, held the old man's hand, and nodded firmly: "Old man, don't worry, we will do our best."

The old man sighed and said, "That monster is so scary. Several people have disappeared in the mountains. Everyone says they were eaten by the monster."

Lin Yu comforted her, "We will find the truth and bring peace to everyone."

That night, Lin Yu and his companions stayed at a villager's house. In the dead of night, the sound of wind could be heard from outside the window from time to time, as if it was the breathing of an unknown creature, making it difficult to fall asleep.

The next morning, before daybreak, Lin Yu and his companions packed their gear and prepared to head deeper into Changbai Mountain. Villagers came to see them off, their eyes filled with anticipation and blessings.

They walked along a winding mountain road. The road was rugged and difficult to walk on, and the snow was deep. Every step was very difficult. Lin Yu walked in front, using his trekking pole to test the depth of the snow, and Suna and Lao Chen followed closely behind.

Suddenly, Suna stopped and pointed at the snow in front of her and said, "Look, what is that?"

Lin Yu and Lao Chen followed her finger and saw a row of huge footprints on the snow. These footprints were of strange shapes, each nearly a meter long, deeply imprinted in the snow, and could not be left by humans or ordinary animals.

"This could be the footprint of the unknown creature we're looking for," Old Chen said, frowning. He squatted down and carefully observed the shape and direction of the footprint. "Judging from the size and depth of the footprint, this creature must have been incredibly heavy."

Lin Yu took out his camera and took pictures of the footprints. "No matter what it is, we must find it."

They followed the footprints and gradually went deeper into the heart of Changbai Mountain. Here the trees were denser and the fog was thicker, which greatly restricted their vision.

"Be careful, something doesn't feel right here," Lin Yu warned. His voice was particularly clear in the silent forest.

Before he finished speaking, a low roar echoed from the valley. The sound reverberated in the valley like thunder, shaking the snow on the trees and making people shudder.

"Get ready for battle!" Suna quickly pulled out the pistol from her waist and looked around vigilantly.

Lin Yu and Lao Chen were also ready for battle. They stood back to back, forming a defensive circle.

The roar echoed again, this time closer, as if right beside them. Suddenly, a massive figure emerged from the mist. It resembled a giant bear, yet possessed strange features. It stood over three meters tall, its hair standing up like steel needles, gleaming with a black sheen. Its eyes flashed an eerie red light, and a stream of cold white air emanated from its mouth.

Lin Yu and others quickly raised their weapons, but the creature was extremely fast and disappeared in the mist in an instant.

"Chase!" Lin Yu shouted.

They chased the mysterious creature through the valley, however, the terrain was complex and foggy, and they soon lost their way.

"It seems like there's some mysterious force interfering with us here," Lao Chen gasped. His glasses were fogged up, and he couldn't see the road ahead clearly.

Lin Yu stopped and observed the surrounding environment. "We can't walk around randomly. Let's look for any clues first."
