Chapter 24: Strange Sounds

Strange Sounds

The strange sound continued to echo outside the window, sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes sharp, sometimes dull, like someone whispering in the darkness, or something rubbing slowly against a rough surface. The sound seemed to possess an invisible magic, gripping Lin Yu and the others' hearts and making them tense. Their eyes turned toward the window, filled with fear and vigilance.

"What's that sound?" Su Na's voice was filled with fear. Her body trembled uncontrollably, and she unconsciously leaned closer to Lin Yu. Her heartbeat accelerated rapidly, as if it was about to jump out of her chest. Countless terrifying images flashed through her mind, each one making her feel terrified. "Are those mysterious people chasing us? Or are there some terrifying monsters in this town?" Her breathing became rapid, and her hands tightly grasped the corner of Lin Yu's clothes, as if it was her only lifeline.

The old man's expression grew solemn, his brow furrowed, his eyes revealing deep worry. "I don't know, but strange things happen all the time in this town." His voice was low and hoarse, as if corroded by time and vicissitudes. His gaze held a hint of helplessness and fear, as if the voice had brought back memories he didn't want to recall. "Over the years, I thought I'd grown accustomed to everything here, but this voice..." He was filled with unease, wondering what danger this time would bring.

Lin Yu approached the window cautiously, taking each step with extreme caution, as if he were walking on a minefield. His heartbeat was remarkably clear in the quiet room, and his breathing became slow and careful. Through the hazy glass, the fog outside the window was like thick milk, shrouding everything in a hazy haze, making it impossible to see anything clearly. "I can't see anything. The fog is too thick." His voice was filled with frustration and anxiety, and beads of sweat unknowingly seeped onto his forehead. His hand unconsciously rested on the window, and he felt a chill from his fingertips, as if the window was a portal to another cold world.

Old Chen clenched his weapon, his knuckles turning white from the strain. "Whatever it is, we must handle it with caution." His voice was firm and powerful, trying to bring a sense of security to everyone. But inside, he was also filled with fear and anxiety, but he knew that at this moment, he could not show any weakness. "We've been through so much, we can't fall here." He silently encouraged himself, his eyes fixed on the door, ready to fight at any moment.

At this moment, the sound suddenly stopped, and the surroundings fell into a dead silence. This sudden silence was even more terrifying than the previous sound, as if the whole world had been muted.

"This...this sudden silence is even more terrifying." Suna's voice trembled, her eyes wide with fear. Every breath in the room seemed to freeze, making it hard to breathe. "Does this mean something even more terrifying is about to happen?" Various terrifying scenarios kept surfacing in her mind, making it almost impossible to think.

"Everyone, don't panic. Let's search the house for another exit first," Lin Yu said, trying to remain calm, trying to find a glimmer of hope in this chaotic situation. His eyes quickly scanned every corner of the room, his mind racing. "We can't just sit there and wait for death. We must proactively find a way out." His voice was firm, but his heart was filled with anxiety and unease.

They began searching the house. A stale, decaying smell permeated the air, the scent of time and oblivion. With every step, they could feel dust rising from their feet, forming tiny clouds of dust. The room was dimly lit, with only a few faint rays filtering through the cracks in the windows, creating hazy beams. The furniture was coated in thick dust, as if it hadn't been touched in ages.

Suddenly, Lin Yu found a yellowed diary in a corner. The cover was worn, and the pages were brittle, as if they would crumble to pieces at the slightest touch. "This might give us some clues," Lin Yu said, gently flipping open the diary. He moved with extreme caution, fearing to damage this precious diary.

The diary's paper was already fragile, and the handwriting was a little blurry, but they still tried to decipher it. The handwriting was like an ancient code, hiding unknown secrets.

"It seems to record some of the past events of this town," Lin Yu said, his voice tinged with excitement and anticipation. But as he read deeper, his expression grew more and more solemn.

Just as they were about to study the diary more carefully, heavy footsteps were heard outside the door. The footsteps were slow and powerful, and each step seemed to knock on their hearts. "Dong... Dong... Dong..." The sound echoed in the silent corridor, making people shudder.

"Oh no, something is coming!" Old Chen whispered, his body tense, ready to deal with any emergency at any time.

Lin Yu quickly put the diary away and said, "Everyone get ready!" His voice was low and decisive.

Suna's heart beat faster, and she clasped her hands together tightly, praying silently.

The footsteps got closer and closer, and finally stopped at the door...
