Chapter 270: Choices and Crisis, Survival through Secret Passages

Choices and crises, survival in secret passages

Lin Yu and Su Na stood before the three forked roads, feeling as if they were on the brink of an abyss. The roar emanating from the secret passage grew increasingly deafening, like the frantic tolling of a doomsday knell. The entire passageway shook violently as if struck by an earthquake. Lin Yu knew that time was running out for them to make a decision; every second of delay could lead them to irretrievable doom. His gaze darted across the patterns at the entrances of the three forked roads, trying to discern a single clue from these enigmatic symbols that might guide them.

"Suna, we're out of time." Lin Yu's voice trembled slightly with anxiety, yet it carried a desperate determination. "I've thought over this over and over again. While the Path of the Sword seems to offer a powerful way to overcome difficulties, it's too straightforward and explicit. Often, such obvious choices conceal traps. The Path of Flowers, while symbolizing vitality, seems too illusory and unreliable in this eerie, perilous secret passage. Eyes represent insight, perhaps meaning that only with keen observation can we find the gem amidst the thick fog. I think we should choose the path engraved with the eye," Lin Yu said quickly, pointing to the corresponding fork in the road, his eyes revealing determination and resolve.

Suna gripped her weapon tightly, its trembling hand. As she listened to Lin Yu's analysis, her heart pounding with unease, the trust she'd built up over the years fighting alongside Lin Yu forced her to nod without hesitation. "Okay, I'll choose the Eye path with you. I hope our choice is the right one, leading us to the gem and solving all these mysteries." There was a subtle tremor in Suna's voice, but more of a firmness. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself.

Without a moment's hesitation, the two men walked with determined, hurried steps toward the fork in the path etched with an eye. As they continued deeper, flickering lights and shadows began to appear on the walls of the secret passage. These shadows seemed like dreamlike illusions, yet they appeared before their eyes in all reality. Faint and blurry images emerged from the shadows, seemingly depicting an ancient and mysterious sacrificial ceremony. A group of people dressed in strange attire, embroidered with mysterious symbols and patterns, shimmered eerily in the dim light. They danced slowly around a massive stone platform, crafted from an unknown black stone. Its surface was as smooth as a mirror, yet it exuded an ancient and heavy aura. Atop the platform sat a softly luminous gem, its light flickering in the shadows, as if beckoning them.

"These images might be hinting at something." Lin Yu observed the light and shadow intently, while vigilantly scanning the surroundings for any movement, not daring to let his guard down. His heart was filled with anticipation for clues about the gems from these images, yet he was also overwhelmed by an inexplicable fear, worried that behind these seemingly peaceful scenes, deadly danger might suddenly emerge at any time.

At this moment, without warning, the ground ahead began to shake violently, as if the earth were being violently shaken by an invisible giant hand. Cracks spread rapidly like a ferocious spider web, shattering the ground wherever they passed. "No, be careful!" Lin Yu shouted subconsciously, reflexively reaching out to tightly grasp Suna's hand, and quickly retreating with all his strength. However, the cracks spread at an astonishing speed, like a surging tide, and in the blink of an eye, they spread mercilessly beneath their feet. Lin Yu gritted his teeth, pushed the ground hard with both feet, and used this force to leap with Suna to a relatively intact piece of ground nearby.

Before they could even find their balance, a swarm of spider-like monsters suddenly emerged from the cracks. These monsters were incredibly massive, more than a man tall, like moving hills. They were covered in a black carapace that gleamed with a cold, eerie sheen in the dim light, like armor from hell. Their eyes, like pairs of green will-o'-the-wisp fire, gleamed with a cruel, bloodthirsty light, revealing an endless ferocity. A sticky liquid flowed from their mouths, dripping onto the ground with a sizzling sound, as if it were highly corrosive, instantly corroding the ground into black pits.

"How could these monsters suddenly appear!" Suna couldn't help but exclaim, a flicker of barely concealed fear in her eyes. But she had experienced countless adventures, so the fear was fleeting, and she quickly calmed down. She quickly focused her mind, chanting a mantra, and summoned the Gu insects. Like warriors at the clarion call, the Gu insects swarmed from her sleeves, quickly gathering in the air, forming a colorful cloud that flew fiercely towards the monsters.

Lin Yu, without hesitation, brandished his sword, charging at the monsters like a flash of black lightning. His powerful swings shone a cold light, like a blade slicing through the darkness. A monster, claws and fangs bared, lunged at him, swift as the wind. Lin Yu's eyes were sharp, and as he saw the right moment, he concentrated all his strength into his arm and stabbed the monster's head with his sword. However, the monster's carapace was as hard as steel, and the sword's thrust left only a shallow mark, like a light scratch on solid rock. The monster, struck, let out a sharp, furious roar, like the cry of a night owl, chilling to the bone. It swung its massive, powerful forelimbs like giant iron rods, sweeping fiercely towards Lin Yu. Lin Yu reacted quickly, dodging to the side, but the forelimb still grazed his arm, leaving a deep, bloody mark on his arm. Blood flowed out, staining his sleeve red.
