Chapter 375: Exploring the Underground Humans in Bureau 749

749 Bureau: Exploring the Underground Humans

Lin Yu and his team had just returned to Bureau 749 after resolving the crisis of the mountain calamity, and before they had time to rest, a new mystery unfolded. The bureau received numerous reports from remote areas of strange noises and flashes of unidentified light near ancient mines and caves. Others claimed to have seen a small, nimble "strange figure" passing by. These reports caught Bureau 749's attention, and Lin Yu was once again entrusted with the important task of leading Lao Chen, Professor Li, and Xiao Zhao to investigate.

The group arrived at one of the most frequent reports, an abandoned mining area surrounded by overgrown weeds. The dilapidated mine entrance resembled a black hole in the earth, emitting an eerie atmosphere. The area surrounding the mine entrance was riddled with spiderweb-like cracks, as if it could collapse at any moment. In the distance, several abandoned mine buildings swayed precariously in the wind, their windows shattered and creaking, as if telling the story of a former prosperity and present desolation.

Lin Yu looked at the scene before him and couldn't help feeling a chill in his heart. "This time, the situation feels even stranger than before. What exactly are these so-called 'weirdos'? And how are they connected to this abandoned mining area?" Old Chen, checking the detection equipment on the side, said, "From the information we have so far, there's no clue at all. But my intuition tells me that there's a huge secret hidden behind this." Professor Li looked at the mine entrance, pushed his glasses, and said, "In any case, let's go in and take a look. Maybe we'll find the answers we're looking for down there. But everyone must be careful, as unknown dangers may be everywhere." Xiao Zhao tightly gripped the modified weapon in his hand, his eyes revealing excitement and anticipation. "Whatever it is, we'll know when we encounter it. I can't wait to uncover this mystery."

The group slowly descended the narrow, ramshackle mine shaft, a nauseating stench of dampness and decay permeating the air. Tiny flickers of light shone on the walls, like the eyes of unknown creatures, or the faint glow of ancient, mystical runes. Occasionally, pieces of rubble fell from overhead, creating a crisp sound in the silent passage, adding to the tense atmosphere.

After descending for a distance, they arrived at a spacious underground cavern. From the ceiling dangled massive stalactites like sharp fangs, while the jagged stalagmites on the floor threatened to pierce a foot at any moment. The walls were covered in strange carvings. Some resembled ancient rituals, with people worshipping around a giant, glowing sphere; others resembled the forms of bizarre creatures, small in stature, with large heads and spindly limbs.

Professor Li leaned in to examine the patterns carefully, his eyes filled with confusion. "The style and techniques of these patterns are extremely ancient, and they don't seem to be recent creations. Furthermore, these patterns seem to suggest that a unique civilization once existed here. But why do we never have any relevant records?" Lin Yu looked at the patterns and had a vague sense of foreboding. "Could those 'weird people' be related to this unknown civilization?"

Just then, a faint commotion emanated from the depths of the cave, like whispers, or the humming of machinery. Everyone immediately became alert, cautiously moving in the direction of the sound. After turning around a large stalagmite, they encountered a startling scene: a group of diminutive "humans" bustling about. These "humans" stood less than a meter tall, their skin a pale blue, their eyes large and round, gleaming with a strange light. They wore tight, metallic-textured clothing and held glimmering tools, seemingly engaged in some mysterious task.

The appearance of Lin Yu and his companions caught the attention of these "underground humans." One of them, seemingly their leader, approached and spoke in a strange language, his tone tinged with a hint of caution. Lin Yu attempted to communicate with them using simple body language and gestures, while signaling Professor Li to try communicating with them in the ancient language the bureau had in reserve.

Professor Li cleared his throat and spoke in an ancient dialect, "We have no ill intentions. We simply stumbled upon this place and wish to understand why you live underground." Unexpectedly, the leader of the "underground humans" looked surprised, then responded in a fairly fluent ancient dialect, "Are you humans from the surface? Our ancestors fled a devastating disaster and journeyed deep underground. For years, we have been guarding a secret that concerns the survival of both the surface world and our underground world."

Lin Yu's heart tightened, and he asked, "What secret? Can you tell us? Maybe we can deal with it together." The underground human leader hesitated for a moment, and slowly said, "A long time ago, a terrible energy storm swept the entire world. Our ancestors felt that the ground was no longer safe, so they led their people here. At the same time, we shouldered the mission of guarding an ancient device. This device can balance the energy above and below the ground. If it is destroyed, both worlds will be doomed. But recently, this device seems to have an abnormality. We have been working hard to repair it, but we have never found the root of the problem."

At that moment, a sudden, violent tremor erupted from deep within the cave, accompanied by a shrill alarm. The underground human leader's expression changed drastically: "Oh no! The device seems to be in a worsening condition! We need to check it out!" Everyone followed the underground humans and quickly ran deeper into the cave.

Arriving at the device, they saw a massive circular structure, its surface gleaming with chaotic light, the air around it seemingly distorted. Sparks flew from the structure, emitting a crackling sound. The underground humans gathered around it, attempting to stabilize it, but their efforts proved ineffective.
