Chapter 390: The Mystery of Peng Jiamu's Disappearance in Lop Nur (Part 2)

749 Bureau: The Mystery of Peng Jiamu's Disappearance in Lop Nur (Part 2)

On the night in Lop Nur, the cold wind roared like a roaring beast, sweeping across the deadly desert. The wind blades, like knives, sliced through the tent with a sharp, piercing whistle, as if ripping the flimsy shelter apart. Lin Yu was awakened from his sleep by an eerie sound. It seemed to come from a distant abyss, like someone sobbing softly, or some unknown creature screaming in pain. In the nearly frozen silence of the desert night, it seemed particularly abrupt and terrifying.

Lin Yu's heart suddenly tightened, and a chill ran up his spine. He subconsciously held his breath and listened attentively to the strange sound. His brain was working rapidly, thinking about the possible dangers. In this mysterious and dangerous Lop Nur, any abnormality could mean a fatal threat. He gently woke up Lao Chen who was sleeping next to him, and said in a low voice that was almost inaudible: "Lao Chen, listen, there is a strange sound."

Old Chen, a light sleeper to begin with, was jolted awake by Lin Yu's push. His hand, like lightning, reached for the weapon beside his pillow, his weapon of choice in the face of unknown danger. His eyes instantly grew sharp and alert, fixed on the darkness outside the tent. He whispered, "That sound isn't right! Is something approaching?" Old Chen's voice was steady, but Lin Yu could sense the underlying nervousness.

The two men cautiously emerged from the tent, a piercing chill hitting them, making them shiver uncontrollably. Moonlight streamed down the desert, casting a chilling light across the dunes, as if covered in a layer of silvery frost. The shadows of the dunes stretched infinitely in the moonlight, their shapes distorted and bizarre, like a demon with bared fangs, ready to pounce and devour them at any moment.

Professor Li and Xiao Zhao were also awakened by the eerie sound. They hurried out of the tent and reunited with Lin Yu and Lao Chen. Xiao Zhao's face was pale. He gripped the tools tightly, his knuckles turning white from the strain. His eyes revealed a hint of nervousness and uneasiness. "Where is this sound coming from? It feels so eerie."

Professor Li frowned, closed his eyes slightly, and listened carefully: "It sounds like the east. Let's go over and take a look, but everyone must be careful. In Lop Nur, any negligence may put us in an irretrievable situation." Professor Li's voice was low and serious. He was well aware of the dangers of this trip, but as the wise man in the team, he had to remain calm and guide everyone.

Everyone walked cautiously in the direction of the sound, each step proving exceedingly difficult. The sand was soft, and their feet sank into it, making a slight rustling sound. A chill wind howled past them, as if countless invisible hands were pulling at them, trying to stop them from moving forward. The surrounding darkness, like a living thing, pressed in, causing their breathing to quicken.

As they drew closer, the sound grew clearer, a groan of pain interspersed with eerie whispers, as if someone in the darkness, enduring endless torture, was sending out a desperate cry for help. The sound was like an invisible hand, gripping their hearts tightly and causing them to beat faster.

Behind a sand dune, they spotted a figure. The figure was blurry in the moonlight, barely discernible as a human form, yet emanating a strange, hazy glow, as if it didn't belong to this world. Lin Yu and the others were startled, a sense of inexplicable fear welling up in their hearts. They slowly approached, their steps unconsciously lighter, their grip on their weapons tightening, ready to respond to any emergency.

As they approached, they discovered a man in a worn scientific expedition uniform. His face was gaunt, his skin chapped, his lips peeling, and his eyes hollow, as if he had lost his soul. His body trembled slightly, perhaps from the cold or fear. Lin Yu's heart trembled. Could this be related to Peng Jiamu's disappearance? He tentatively asked, "Who are you? Why are you here?" Lin Yu tried to keep his voice steady, but his heart was filled with doubt and anticipation.

The man slowly raised his head, staring at them with a dull gaze. His lips trembled, but he could only utter some indistinct sounds. His eyes revealed a hint of confusion and fear, as if he was not looking at a human, but some terrifying being. Professor Li walked forward, squatted down, and tried to communicate with him. Professor Li comforted him softly, trying to make his voice sound gentle and friendly: "Don't be afraid, we are here to help you. Can you tell us what happened?"

After some effort, Professor Li finally managed to understand him. It turned out this man was a member of the scientific expedition team. After Peng Jiamu's disappearance, he and the other team members became lost in the desert and encountered a series of bizarre events. They witnessed phenomena that could not be explained by science, such as strange lights that suddenly appeared in the sky, colorful yet inexplicably eerie, as if from another dimension; and a huge vortex that appeared out of nowhere in the desert, so deep that it seemed to swallow everything. In the chaos, he became separated from the team and has been wandering the desert ever since, his mental state gradually breaking down.

Lin Yu and the others listened to his story, their hearts filled with shock. Xiao Zhao's mouth dropped open in surprise, and after a moment, he said, "So, there really is a supernatural phenomenon behind the disappearances back then? Could those rumors be true?" Xiao Zhao's eyes were filled with confusion and fear. He had originally been skeptical of supernatural phenomena, but now, what he saw forced him to re-evaluate everything.

Old Chen frowned, and the wrinkles on his face deepened: "It seems that our guess is correct, there is a lot of water behind this. But what do these phenomena he mentioned mean? Is it a warning from some unknown force, or does it have other purposes?" Old Chen's heart was full of doubts. Years of experience told him that this missing case was far from as simple as it seemed.
