Chapter 396: Traveling Through the Ancient Mirror (Part 1)

Traveling Through the Ancient Mirror (Part 1)

Beneath the bustling city, hidden in a corner forgotten by time, lies a high-end auction in full swing. Crystal chandeliers cast a soft, dazzling light, illuminating the exquisite attire of the bidders. Men in exquisitely tailored suits, women adorned with dazzling jewelry, their eyes revealing an eager desire for the rare items. Hushed conversations fill the spacious auction room, creating a humming sound.

Among the many eye-catching lots, an ancient mansion caused quite a stir. The announcement of its auction sparked a flurry of whispers among bidders. Lin Yu, Lao Chen, Professor Li, and Xiao Zhao, a special team from Bureau 749 specializing in paranormal investigations, also attended the auction. Having heard of recent strange occurrences at the mansion, suggesting possible supernatural interference, they decided to investigate.

When the auctioneer announced the start of the auction for the historic house with a passionate voice, the atmosphere instantly heated up. Bidders raised their paddles, and the price soared. Finally, the house was purchased by a mysterious wealthy businessman. Tall and handsome, dressed in a tailored black suit, he exuded a confident and arrogant expression. He seemed unconcerned with the mysterious rumors surrounding the house, solely focused on transforming it into a luxurious villa to embody his status.

After the auction, Lin Yu and his team managed to contact the wealthy businessman through various channels. They explained their identities as Bureau 749 and their purpose for investigating the strange happenings at the ancient house. The businessman was initially skeptical of their arrival, but faced with the authority and regulations of Bureau 749, he reluctantly agreed to allow them to enter the house for investigation.

When Lin Yu and his companions arrived at the ancient house, a gloomy and dilapidated structure came into view. The exterior walls of the house were constructed of blue bricks, eroded by time, leaving them mottled and stained. In many places, the bricks were loose, as if they would fall with the slightest push. Withered yellow weeds grew in the cracks of the wall, shivering in the breeze, creating a sense of desolation and decay. The house's main entrance consisted of two heavy wooden doors, the red paint long peeling off, revealing the decayed wood grain, resembling twisted, grimacing faces. The door knockers were shaped like two ferocious animal heads, their eyes hollow and lifeless, as if coldly gazing down upon anyone who approached.

Old Chen looked at the ancient house in front of him, frowning tightly, and whispered, "This place looks like it exudes an evil aura. No wonder so many strange things have been reported."

Xiao Zhao swallowed hard, a hint of fear in his eyes. "Captain, this old house feels even more eerie and terrifying than I imagined. Is there really some evil spirit there?"

Lin Yu patted Xiao Zhao on the shoulder and comforted him, "Don't be afraid, we are here to find out what happened here. Everyone be careful and be vigilant."

Professor Li pulled a small detector from his backpack and scanned the area around the ancient house. He said, "Based on the preliminary data, the magnetic field here is somewhat abnormal. This may be related to those strange phenomena."

Everyone slowly pushed open the door. With a creaking sound, the hinges made a harsh noise, which was particularly eerie in the silent atmosphere, like a sigh from the old house. Entering the old house, a stale and decaying smell hit me, making me cover my mouth and nose. The house was dimly lit, and the sunlight filtered through the dusty windows, casting only a few faint and blurry shadows on the ground. The furniture was covered in thick dust, like silent guards, quietly guarding this house full of secrets. A few paintings hung on the walls, the pictures were blurred, and only some distorted human figures could be vaguely seen, as if telling unknown stories.

They walked along the long corridor, their footsteps echoing in the empty house, as if countless pairs of eyes were watching them from the darkness. Oil lamps lit at intervals on the walls on both sides of the corridor, but the wicks had long been extinguished, leaving only the black lamp holders, like empty eyes.

Arriving at the entrance, a massive ancient mirror appeared before everyone. Its frame was intricately carved with delicate patterns, as if crafted by a master. However, a closer look revealed these patterns were no ordinary decorative motifs, but rather strange symbols. These twisted and sinuous symbols seemed to possess life, their shapes seemingly shifting under the light and shadow. The mirror surface was slightly mottled, as if weathered by countless years, yet it still faintly reflected the tense faces of the crowd.

Professor Li stepped forward, put on gloves, and carefully touched the mirror, examining the symbols. He said, "This ancient mirror is made of a unique material; it's definitely not ordinary. Judging by the carved symbols, they appear to contain some mysterious power, possibly related to the supernatural. The arrangement of these symbols bears resemblance to ancient mystical patterns I'm familiar with, but with some unique variations. They may hold the key to unlocking the mystery of the ancient house."

Old Chen frowned, examining the ancient mirror. A sense of foreboding welled up in his heart. He said, "This mirror looks eerie. The symbols on it exude an indescribable strangeness. I have a feeling the strange happenings in this old house are connected to this mirror."

Xiao Zhao curiously leaned closer to the mirror, trying to make out the symbols. He muttered, "What on earth is engraved on this? It looks so strange. The more I look at it, the creepier it gets."

Lin Yu looked around warily and said, "Everyone, be careful. Since there are strange rumors about this ancient house, this mirror must be something special. Let's check around first to see if there are any other anomalies. Maybe we can find some clues to figure out what secrets this mirror holds."
