Chapter 397: Traveling Through the Ancient Mirror (Part 2)

Through the Ancient Mirror (Part 2)

The figure slowly emerged from the ancient mirror, and the surrounding air seemed to be instantly drained of all warmth. A chill like countless tiny ice needles penetrated the bones of everyone, causing them to shiver violently. Only when the figure fully emerged did they see clearly that it was a woman dressed in ancient clothing. Her face was as pale as the lingering winter snow, devoid of any color. Her eyes were hollow and lifeless, like two bottomless black holes, revealing an endless eerie and dead silence. Her lips were purple, almost black, as if tainted by a deadly poison. Every time they opened and closed, they exuded a sickening stench of decay, like a corpse buried for years and suddenly unearthed.

The woman's body swayed, as if a gentle breeze could knock her over. Yet, in an extremely strange posture, like a puppet controlled by strings, she slowly approached the crowd. Her long hair fell like a black waterfall, the ends almost dragging on the ground. With every step she took, her hair rustled against the ground, like countless insects eagerly crawling in the darkness, making everyone's heart tremble.

Xiao Zhao's eyes widened in terror, nearly popping out of their sockets. His voice trembled like a leaf in the autumn wind, "Is this...is this a human or a ghost?" His legs felt as though their bones had been drained away, limp enough to barely support him. The weapon in his hand trembled violently like a candle in the wind. He felt as if his heart were being gripped by an invisible hand, its every beat sending a jolt of fear through his body.

Lin Yu quickly positioned himself before his teammates like a black barrier, gripping his long sword tightly, his knuckles white from the strain. Though equally gripped by fear, his captain's intense sense of responsibility compelled him to maintain composure and channel his strength. Summoning his courage, he shouted, "Whatever you are, don't act rashly!" However, the woman seemed to ignore his warnings, continuing her eerie pace as she slowly approached. Her hollow eyes stared intently at Lin Yu, as if to see into his very soul.

Old Chen reacted quickly. His hand, like lightning, reached into his pocket and pulled out several talismans. The talismans flickered faintly in his trembling hands, as if sensing the overwhelming power of the evil before him. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself, chanting, "Righteousness of Heaven and Earth, slay the evil and banish the evil spirits! Hurry and obey the command!" The talismans instantly ignited, transforming into a dazzling golden light that shot towards the woman like an arrow from a bow. However, the woman did not dodge. The golden light struck her body, causing only a slight pause, like a stone dropped into a deep pool, creating only a ripple. Then, as if nothing had happened, she continued walking towards the crowd.

"Ordinary spells won't work on her!" Old Chen shouted, beads of sweat instantly forming on his forehead and trickling down his cheeks like beads from a broken string. He was secretly surprised. Having worked in Bureau 749 for many years, he had witnessed many evil creatures, but the power emanating from this woman was far beyond his imagination. It seemed that this time they were truly in trouble, unprecedented in their history.

Professor Li nervously observed the woman's every move, his mind racing like a machine, formulating a response. He keenly observed that, despite her slow movements, each step created distorted ripples in the air around her, like the surface of water, as if her presence were disrupting the spatial order. "Lin Yu, this woman may be closely connected to the ancient mirror's mysterious power. To defeat her, we must first uncover its secrets," Professor Li exclaimed, his voice tinged with anxiety. He knew time was running out; he had to find a solution quickly, or they would all be doomed.

Lin Yu nodded slightly, watching the advancing woman warily while his mind raced through countermeasures. The woman was already getting closer and closer. She stretched out her dry, sticky hand, her fingers long and curved, her nails pitch-black like ink, like sharp claws, and fiercely clawed at Lin Yu. Lin Yu felt a piercing chill wash over him, as if the Grim Reaper's scythe was already at his neck. He dodged to the side, his movements as nimble as a leopard, and the woman's hand brushed past his clothes, bringing with it a gust of icy wind. In that instant, Lin Yu felt a chill that penetrated his bones, as if his very soul were frozen by it.

"This is not a solution. We have to distract her attention and then find an opportunity to crack the secret of the ancient mirror." Lin Yu shouted anxiously, with an unquestionable decisiveness in his voice.

Old Chen and Xiao Zhao, understanding their intentions, quickly drew the woman's attention from both sides. Old Chen shouted and waved his weapon, attempting to provoke her; Xiao Zhao circled behind her, occasionally stabbing her with his weapon, hoping to disrupt her movements. As expected, the woman, drawn in by their actions, slowly turned, cast a blank gaze at Old Chen and Xiao Zhao, and then walked towards them with a strange gait.

Lin Yu and Professor Li took the opportunity to cautiously approach the ancient mirror. Lin Yu's eyes widened as he carefully examined the symbols on the mirror, trying to find clues to the woman's appearance from these mysterious symbols. The symbols were strangely shaped, twisting and winding, like some ancient and mysterious text, or like dormant monsters, emitting an eerie aura. Lin Yu's mind continuously recalled various ancient texts and records of mysterious formations, trying to match the symbols before him with the knowledge he remembered.

Professor Li quickly pulled out various detection instruments from his backpack, their dim glows flickering. His expression was focused, his eyes fixed on the constantly fluctuating data on the instruments, the wrinkles on his forehead deepening with nervousness. "This ancient mirror exudes a strange energy, unlike any we've encountered before. Perhaps solving the mystery of this energy can prevent this," Professor Li said, his voice low, but every word radiating with determination.
