749 Bureau Zhangjiajie Giant Salamander Incident (Part 2)
Lin Yu and Ouyang Zhenghao, filled with doubt and reluctance, walked heavily back to their temporary base. The lights inside were dim, and in this atmosphere filled with uncertainty and fear, they seemed particularly weak, as if they would be swallowed by darkness at any moment.
Lin Yu slumped down at his desk, his eyes fixed on the crudely sketched map of the forest, his brow furrowed as if he were trapped in a complex maze, unable to find the way out. His heart was churning, a tangle of thoughts. This 900-year-old giant salamander, capable of transforming into a human form, was like a vast mystery, each clue a fork in the maze, elusive.
Ouyang Zhenghao paced the room relentlessly, the wooden floor creaking under his feet, as if sighing helplessly at their current predicament. His face was filled with resentment and anger, and he muttered, "That guy was so cunning. He actually let him slip away like that. If I run into him again, I'll make sure he knows how powerful I, Ouyang Zhenghao, am!" His anger burned fiercely, and he wanted to rush out immediately, find that mysterious figure, and give him a good beating.
Lin Yu raised his head, his eyes a little tired, but still looked at Ouyang Zhenghao firmly: "Don't be discouraged, Ouyang. This is just the beginning. His appearance has confirmed our guess that the 900-year-old giant salamander transformed into a human form is most likely true. What we have to do now is to calm down, carefully sort out the clues, and find flaws from his words and deeds." Lin Yu knew very well that anger could not solve any problems. What was needed at this moment was calmness and rationality.
Ouyang Zhenghao stopped, nodded slightly, took a deep breath, and tried to calm himself: "You are right, Lin Yu. I just can't swallow this. The look in that guy's eyes and the tone of his voice are really too arrogant." He thought of the appearance of the mysterious figure, and the disgust and vigilance in his heart deepened a bit.
The two began to carefully recall every detail of their encounter with the mysterious figure. Lin Yu picked up a pen and wrote down the figure's characteristics on paper: tall stature, sickly pale skin, dark green eyes, sharp, yellow teeth... With each feature he wrote, his brow furrowed a little deeper, as if these words were not written on paper, but engraved in his heart.
"How did he know our intentions? Did our actions get leaked? Or...does he really have some supernatural sense?" Ouyang Zhenghao looked at Lin Yu with a puzzled expression, his heart filled with worry. If their whereabouts were leaked, their subsequent investigation would be even more difficult.
Lin Yu pondered for a moment and said slowly: "Both possibilities exist. But he warned us not to meddle in other people's business, which means he has something to hide and is afraid that we will continue to investigate. This also means that he must be planning something ulterior motive." Lin Yu's eyes became sharp. He firmly believed that as long as he followed this clue, he would be able to uncover the true face of the giant salamander.
After some discussion, they decided to delve deeper into the forest, searching for clues based on the giant salamander's habits. Giant salamanders prefer shade to light, often inhabiting caves and rocky grottoes within deep pools of streams and rivers. They followed the winding stream, the water gurgling among the rocks, creating a clear, ethereal sound that seemed to reveal a hidden secret in the stillness of the forest.
The forest was exceptionally quiet in the afternoon. Sunlight filtered through the dense foliage, creating dappled shadows that danced like ghostly figures through the trees. Lin Yu and Ouyang Zhenghao walked cautiously, each step light and light, fearful of disturbing the danger lurking in the shadows. The surrounding trees, tall and dense, formed a green barrier, isolating them from the outside world and creating an oppressive and eerie atmosphere.
Suddenly, Lin Yu discovered a hidden cave entrance beneath a large rock by the stream. The entrance was obscured by weeds and vines, making it difficult to spot without careful observation. The soil around the entrance showed signs of being disturbed, as if something was frequently moving in and out. Lin Yu's heart tightened. He signaled Ouyang Zhenghao to keep his voice down, and the two of them slowly approached the cave entrance.
The cave was filled with a pungent, putrid odor, like the odor of countless rotting corpses piled together, making one want to vomit. Lin Yu turned on his flashlight and shone it into the cave. He saw that the cave was deep and the walls were covered with wet moss. The moss shimmered eerily in the flashlight, as if countless eyes were watching them from the darkness. The ground was littered with animal remains: fish bones, bird bones, and some unknown animal bones. It looked very scary, as if this was a terrifying slaughterhouse.
Just as they were about to enter the cave, they heard light footsteps behind them. Startled, they turned quickly to see a white-haired old man standing behind them. He was dressed in a tattered black robe, his figure hunched, his face covered in wrinkles, like deep ravines carved by time. His eyes were kind, yet shrouded in mystery, leaving them elusive.
"Two young men, this is not the place for you. Leave now." The old man's voice was low and gentle, but with an unquestionable majesty.
Lin Yu looked at the old man in confusion, with countless questions in his mind: "Old man, who are you? Why did you ask us to leave? What kind of danger is there?"
The old man sighed, his eyes revealing a hint of worry and helplessness. "I am the guardian of this forest. I have protected this forest for most of my life. A terrifying creature lives within. It possesses powerful and evil forces and will bring disaster upon you."
