749 The Old Corpse in the Desolate Mountain (Part 2)
In the deepening twilight, Lin Yu and the others followed the faint, mournful cries, moving cautiously and slowly along the winding, gravelly mountain path. The surrounding trees seemed to be influenced by an evil, twisted force, taking on a terrifying form. Strange vines clung to the thick trunks, like countless serpentine snakes, while the branches stretched out, claws and teeth, as if manipulated by invisible hands, casting strange, eerie shadows on the ground. Moonlight struggled to filter through the gaps between the branches, but only formed patches of eerie light and shadow, as if countless pairs of luminous eyes were watching their every move in the darkness, sending a chill down everyone's spine.
The miserable cries, like sharp hooks, tugged at everyone's nerves, becoming increasingly clear, as if an invisible, sinister hand were pulling them towards an unknown abyss of fear. Suddenly, not far ahead, a cave of moderate size suddenly appeared before everyone's eyes. A faint mist filled the cave entrance, a strange grayish-white color, like a thin veil, yet exuding an indescribable eeriness. A sickening, putrid odor emanated from the mist, like the stench of countless corpses rotting and fermenting in a dark, damp environment. It was so pungent that everyone could barely breathe, and they instinctively covered their mouths and noses.
Ouyang Zhenghao's brows were furrowed, his features twisted together, his eyes filled with vigilance and fear. He spoke in a low, trembling voice, "Lin Yu, this cave looks eerie. The screams seemed to be coming from inside. This smell... I feel like there must be a huge danger hidden inside. Maybe the 'Old Corpse in the Desolate Mountain' is waiting for us inside."
Lin Yu's face was solemn, his eyes were as sharp as an eagle. He stared at the cave entrance, nodded, and said, "Everyone must be careful. This cave is very likely to hide dangers beyond our imagination. Follow me closely, stay highly vigilant, and don't slack off. Once there is any abnormal situation, take care of each other immediately." After that, he took a deep breath, endured the pungent smell, and stepped into the cave first.
The cave was dark and damp, a world of darkness cut off from the outside world. The walls were covered in wet moss, which shimmered eerily in the dim light, as if countless tiny eyes were watching. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, strewn with rocks of varying sizes and pits of varying depths, making it easy to trip. They advanced cautiously, their lighting devices powerless in the profound darkness, illuminating only a small area ahead. The boundless darkness around them seemed poised to surge in like a tide, completely engulfing them.
As they deepened into the cave, the miserable cries grew more shrill, like sharp knives piercing everyone's eardrums. They echoed wildly in the narrow, enclosed cave, making their heads buzz and their hair stand on end. Suddenly, Lin Yu, who was walking in the front, stopped abruptly. His keen eyes spotted some strange marks on the ground ahead. They looked like the remains of some gigantic, strange-looking creature. The marks were still fresh, with the soil and gravel clearly squeezed and turned, forming deep gullies.
"Everyone, look, what is this?" Lin Yu pointed at the traces on the ground and said in a low voice, with a hint of solemnity in his tone.
Everyone quickly gathered around, staring at the startling marks on the ground, a chill running through their hearts. These marks resembled the claw marks of a demon, foreshadowing a thrilling and perilous encounter that lay ahead. Just then, from deep within the cave, a heavy, slow sound of footsteps echoed. "Dong, dong, dong," each step struck like a hammer against everyone's heart, their heartbeats accelerating involuntarily. The footsteps drew closer, as if an incredibly heavy and sinister presence were slowly approaching them.
"Prepare for battle!" Lin Yu shouted in a low but powerful voice. Though his voice was low, it resounded like a bell in everyone's ears, revealing an unquestionable determination and courage. Everyone quickly assumed combat stances, gripping their weapons tightly, their knuckles turning white from the exertion, their eyes fixed intently on the depths of the cave. The tense atmosphere enveloped them like an invisible net, and everyone could clearly hear their own violent heartbeats, as if they were about to burst through their chests.
A figure slowly emerged from the darkness. As it drew closer, the crowd finally got a clear look at its form. It was a hunched, old corpse, its skin a sickly, frightening grayish-white, as if drained of all life by age and evil. Its skin clung to its bones, wrinkled and tattered like a piece of worn parchment. Its eyes, hollow and lifeless, shone with a strange, eerie green light, like two will-o'-the-wisp flickering in the darkness, exuding an endless eeriness and terror. Its mouth was filled with sharp, yellowing fangs, dripping with a sickening green slime that sizzled as it fell to the ground, a highly corrosive sound.
"This... is this the old corpse in the desolate mountain?" a team member said in horror, with an unconcealable tremor in his voice, almost collapsing to the ground in fear of this horrific scene.
The old corpse in the desolate mountain let out a deafening roar, a sound like rolling thunder, shaking the rocks on the cave walls and causing dust to fly. It waved its skinny yet unusually slender arms and pounced on the crowd with such speed that it caught everyone off guard. Lin Yu shouted, "Fire!" The weapons in the hands of the crowd instantly burst into flames, and dazzling rays of light shot towards the old corpse in the desolate mountain, forming a network of fire in the dark cave. However, the bullets hit the old corpse, but it was like hitting extremely hard steel, leaving only shallow dents, and it seemed to cause no substantial damage to it. The old corpse seemed to feel no pain and continued to pounce on the crowd frantically, and the evil and powerful aura became stronger and stronger.
