Episode 23: The Mysterious Rider

The Mysterious Rider

Lin Yu and the others followed the mysterious rider, trudging along the mountain path. The clatter of horse hooves echoed along the narrow path, and the dust kicked up formed hazy clouds under the sunlight. The path was rugged and uneven, and the intertwined branches of the trees on either side created an eerie scene. Occasionally, a few crows would take off from the branches, emitting a chilling cry.

Suna couldn't help but ask, "Excuse me, how did you end up here?" Her voice trembled, her eyes fixed on the rider's back. She was filled with confusion and unease. This mysterious rider, like the eerie mountain road, filled her with an inexplicable fear.

The rider replied coldly, "Don't ask any more questions. You'll know when we get there." His voice seemed to come from far away, emotionless and cold, chilling. His body swayed slightly with the rise and fall of his horse, and his black cape rustled in the wind.

Lao Chen whispered to Lin Yu, "This guy looks very mysterious. I wonder if he's reliable." His brows were furrowed, and his eyes were full of vigilance. Lao Chen's heart was beating fast. He remembered all the dangerous experiences he had before, and he was full of suspicion about this strange rider.

Lin Yu lowered his voice and responded, "Let's see what's going on first. There's no other way right now." His eyes were firm and calm. Although he shared the same concerns, he knew they had no choice in this situation. Lin Yu's hands unconsciously tightened around his weapon, ready to respond to any possible danger.

As they drew closer to the town, they noticed a thin layer of fog surrounding it. The mist swirled like a veil, making the town's outline appear and disappear within the mist, creating a mysterious and unpredictable feeling. The distant town seemed shrouded in a mysterious veil, making its true appearance unclear.

Finally, they reached the entrance to the town. The rider stopped, his hooves scraping up a cloud of dust. "Go inside. There are people here to help you," his voice echoed through the silence. Without waiting for a response, he turned his horse and sped off.

Lin Yu and the others walked into the town, filled with doubt. Empty streets appeared before them. The cobblestones looked damp in the mist, and the houses on either side had their doors and windows tightly shut, as if deliberately hiding something. There was no sound on the street, only the sound of their footsteps, echoing clearly in the silence.

"Why is it so quiet here? It feels weird." There was uneasiness in Suna's voice. She held Lin Yu's arm tightly, looking around, as if she was afraid that something scary would suddenly jump out from a corner.

At this time, an old man walked out of a nearby room. His figure was a little blurry in the mist, his steps were slow and steady, and he was leaning on a cane.

"Welcome here, children." The old man's voice was gentle and kind, as if carrying a soothing power. His face was covered with wrinkles, but his eyes were deep and bright, revealing a wisdom that came from having experienced many vicissitudes of life.

"Old man, what on earth is this place?" Lin Yu asked. There was a hint of urgency in his voice, and his eyes were fixed on the old man, hoping to get an answer from him.

The old man smiled, a smile that spread across the wrinkles on his face like the lines on ancient tree bark. "This is a forgotten corner, but it's also your safe haven." His voice drifted through the mist, carrying a mysterious charm.

Just then, a chilly wind blew, picking up fallen leaves. The leaves danced in the wind, making a rustling sound that sounded like the whispers of countless souls. The mist surged in the wind, growing thicker, gradually engulfing their figures.

Suna couldn't help but shudder, "The wind is so cold, it feels like something bad is going to happen."

Old Chen also looked around nervously, "This place is so weird, can we really get help?"

Lin Yu took a deep breath and tried to keep himself calm. "Don't panic, let's see what this old man has to say."

The old man raised his head and looked at the sky. "This place hides many unknown secrets, but it is also a place where you can temporarily avoid danger."

Lin Yu frowned. "Secret? Old man, can you tell us in detail?"

The old man was silent for a moment, "This is not something that can be explained in a short time. Come with me."

They followed the old man into the house, which was filled with an old-fashioned atmosphere. Under the dim light, there were some ancient furniture and some strange portraits hanging on the walls.

"This town once suffered a disaster, and since then it has become so deserted." The old man said slowly.

"What kind of disaster?" Suna couldn't help but ask.

The old man's eyes grew distant, as if lost in memories. "It was a terrible plague that claimed many lives. Since then, this place has been forgotten by the outside world."

Lin Yu and others listened to the old man's story with sympathy and shock in their hearts.

"But why are you still staying here?" asked Lao Chen.

The old man smiled slightly and said, "I am the guardian of this place. I am waiting for the day when the town can be revitalized."

Lin Yu looked at the old man and asked, "Will our arrival bring any changes to this place?"

The old man was silent for a while, "Perhaps, this is fate."

At this moment, a strange sound suddenly came from outside the window, as if something was approaching...
