Chapter 29 Don't Bite
Fireworks outside the window continued to rise tirelessly in clusters, a sea of bright red and purple flowers cycling through the air, falling and blooming, reflecting the entire river water in a shimmering light, like a handful of broken diamonds scattered on the river surface.
Shen Mengqing could no longer see the surging crowd; all he could see were Yu Xin's bright and dim eyes. His breath came in rhythm with the kiss, and when he touched the smooth skin of her neck, she trembled slightly like a blooming firework.
Shen Mengqing reached up and climbed up Yu Xin's back, stroking his taut back muscles through the shirt fabric.
Her fingertips rose and fell, like a fluttering butterfly exploring among the mountains.
Just as her fingers slid across a certain part of his spine, Yu Xin seemed to involuntarily flinch, followed by a faint gasp that was almost drowned out by the sound of fireworks.
Shen Mengqing noticed his movement, a sly glint in her eyes, and chuckled, saying, "So you're ticklish too."
Yu Xin stopped what she was doing, propped herself up and looked down at her. Seeing that her tail was practically wagging in the air with pride, she raised her hand to reach for the ticklish spot on her waist, but was restrained by both of her hands.
Shen Mengqing glared at Yu Xin, but her eyes were not dangerous; they were watery, like a pool of shimmering spring water.
"Don't scratch me," she warned, as if her fur had been pricked.
Yu Xin loosened her grip, grabbed Shen Mengqing with one arm, and rolled to the side. The two switched positions, and she instantly became the one in control.
Shen Mengqing's cunning gleamed even brighter. He grabbed Yu Xin's wrist with one hand and pinched his cheek hard with the other, teasing him, "Have you barely eaten anything this past month? You look thinner."
She examined Yu Xin closely in the light of the fireworks. She noticed that Yu Xin had indeed lost some weight, and her eyes looked deeper. Looking at her for a while, it seemed as if those eyes were about to engulf her.
She chuckled and sneakily slipped her hand inside his clothes to touch his abs.
Thankfully, the muscles are still there; not a single muscle is missing.
Yu Xin was not satisfied with her statement, feeling that it sounded like a provocation. However, since she was currently straddling him, he dared not make any rash moves, but instead placed his hand on her delicate waist and gently tickled her.
Shen Mengqing shuddered from the tickling sensation, her domineering aura instantly crumbling as she slid off his lap and collapsed onto the bed.
Yu Xin seized the opportunity, grabbed her hand, and pulled her close. In a dizzying moment, he easily regained the upper hand.
He wanted her to realize that no matter how thin he was, he still possessed the absolute power of a man.
Yu Xin held Shen Mengqing firmly, propped one hand on her ear, and said in a low, husky voice, "If you keep talking nonsense, I'll scratch you all night."
Shen Mengqing laughed until her stomach hurt from his childish words. She playfully hooked Yu Xin's chin and said, "Yu Xin, I've discovered that you really are like a puppy, scratching and biting."
Upon hearing her words, Yu Xin lowered his head, leaned down, and almost pressed his lips against hers, as if to bite.
The memory of being kissed and bitten by him last time was still vivid in Shen Mengqing's mind. She quickly turned her head to the side and patted his shoulder with both hands, saying, "Don't bite me."
Yu Xin paused, then changed his approach, capturing her lips in his mouth and kissing her deeply. Shen Mengqing placed her hands on his shoulders, their lips entwined in a passionate kiss.
The curtains were half-drawn; the fireworks display was nearing its end. The explosions were increasing in frequency, the sounds booming and lively, announcing its final dance as the star of the show. The fireworks' color changed from light pink to blue, like the breaking of dawn, a breathtaking spectacle.
The last few clusters of fireworks soared into the sky, each bursting into countless smaller bursts, with dazzling sparks cascading down like a man-made meteor shower, giving everyone a chance to make a wish.
Once all the twinkling lights disappeared, only wisps of gray smoke remained in the sky. In a short while, the crowd dispersed, and the river rippled slightly.
...
Shen Mengqing hadn't closed her eyes for long when the sound of running water in the bathroom woke her up. She picked up her phone and checked the time; it was almost ten o'clock. If she didn't go back soon, she would be interrogated by Ms. Hao Meng again.
She got up, put on her clothes and shoes, tidied her hair and makeup in front of the mirror, and then knocked on the bathroom door.
As soon as the sound of water stopped, Yu Xin's cold voice drifted through the mist.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Shen Mengqing said through the door, "I have to go back."
Yu Xin didn't answer. There was a rustling sound inside for a while, and soon he came out wearing a bath towel, with a simple knotted ribbon hanging down his waist. He was broad-shouldered and narrow-waisted. His hair was still wet and hung down, with a few small water droplets rolling down the ends, gathering into larger drops, landing on his collarbone, and then sliding into the dark collar of his clothes.
He walked to the table, picked up his phone, frowned, and said, "It's too late, I'll call you a taxi."
Shen Mengqing then sat down on the bed again, her skirt drooping softly onto the carpet.
She gazed at his tall, imposing figure under the overhead light and thought to herself, "No wonder the ancients said that one should admire a beautiful woman under a dark room with a solitary lamp, for her superior appearance and physique will be fully revealed and captivating."
She braced herself on the bed with both hands and asked him, "When are you leaving this time?"
"Tomorrow," Yu Xin said in a deep voice, "I have some business to attend to in Beicheng tomorrow afternoon."
Shen Mengqing was taken aback. It would take almost a whole day to travel from Chucheng to the provincial capital by high-speed rail, and then from the provincial capital to Beicheng by plane. His schedule was too rushed.
The thought that Yu Xin had traveled so far just to see her stirred a slight ripple in the calm lake of Shen Mengqing's heart.
"Will we make it in time?" she asked worriedly.
After Yu Xin called a car, he put down his phone, turned around to face Shen Mengqing, leaned against the edge of the table, and said, "I've found someone to drive me to the airport in the provincial capital."
"oh oh."
Shen Mengqing understood; the time should be about right.
The two chatted casually, and when the screen showed that the ride-hailing car would arrive in two minutes, Shen Mengqing said "See you in Beicheng" to Yu Xin and went out.
Even on holiday nights, the place is still crowded with people and filled with laughter. The night market stalls downstairs are packed with people, and the aroma of barbecue fills the air.
After getting into the car, Shen Mengqing rolled down the window, letting the cool river breeze blow into the car. In this season, natural wind is much more comfortable than air conditioning.
She rested her chin on her hand, leaning against the window, gazing absently at the wide river. It seemed that ever since she met Yu Xin, he would come to see her every holiday without exception.
Once National Day is over, the next holiday will be New Year's Day. Does that mean she'll be spending New Year's Eve with Yu Xin this year?
The driver suddenly stepped on the gas, and the sudden gust of wind swept away her thoughts. Shen Mengqing silently complained about her inexplicable expectation.
Why would anyone come looking for you at such an important time as New Year's Eve?
When she got home, as expected, Hao Meng asked her why she was only coming back now. Her third aunt said that Hao Qisi had arrived home more than an hour earlier.
This Hao Qisi is so unreliable. He only cares about deceiving her and doesn't even remember to help her cover up her lie.
"After watching the fireworks, I ran into a high school classmate, and we went out for a late-night snack and chatted for a while," Shen Mengqing said.
Hao Meng found it strange: "I've never seen you go out with your high school classmates when you come home these past few years. How come so many classmates have suddenly appeared these past few days?"
"It was all by chance." Shen Mengqing rubbed his sore back and said with all his acting skills, "Mom, I'm too tired from watching the fireworks. I'm going to take a shower first. You should go to bed early."
Hao Meng glanced at her and went back to his room.
After taking a shower, Shen Mengqing lay down on the bed and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
When she opened her eyes again, she picked up her phone. The time had jumped to 9:30 in the morning, and there was an unread message on the screen.
Shen Mengqing clicked on it casually; it was a message from Yu Xin.
He said, "I left something in my hotel room, could you please get it for me?"
He also sent over his room number and a photo of his ID card, which Shen Mengqing guessed was quite important to him, since he gave the impression of being someone who was not short of money and would not go out of his way to retrieve lost items.
Shen Mengqing zoomed in on the buzz cut photo on his ID card, poked at his feignedly cool face a few times, and then clicked save with a smile.
After finishing breakfast under Hao Meng's supervision, Shen Mengqing went out under the pretext of going for a jog along the river and took a taxi to the Chucheng M Hotel.
The hotel reception was very cautious about this kind of thing. After Shen Mengqing gave all the information of the guests, he was asked to call Yu Xin on the spot to confirm. Fortunately, he hadn't taken off yet. He answered the phone and briefly explained the situation to the receptionist.
Having successfully obtained the room key, Shen Mengqing easily found her room.
She swiped her card to go in, and immediately noticed a small box on the table. Yu Xin had forgotten to put it in her luggage, even though it was in such an obvious place.
She took a few steps closer and was taken aback when she saw the brand logo on the box.
It was as if Yu Xin had installed surveillance equipment next to her; a message popped up instantly.
Yu Xin: "Open it and take a look."
"?"
Shen Mengqing glanced at the box a few times, but still cautiously refrained from touching it. She sent a message to Yu Xin saying, "Can I open it? This is such an expensive item, you're not trying to scam me, are you?"
Yu Xin: "..."
Yu Xin: "It's yours, I can't extort money from you."
Shen Mengqing: "?"
She put down her phone and opened the box, puzzled.
Inside the box, on a dark blue grid, lay a necklace. The necklace featured a sunflower in the center, studded with diamonds. The largest diamond in the center was particularly dazzling, shimmering with countless tiny golden sparkles in the sunlight streaming through the window, a thousand times more brilliant than the fireworks of the previous night.
It's a beautiful necklace.
Shen Mengqing immediately searched for the price of the necklace based on the brand.
It's HW's sunflower, worth six figures.
Upon seeing the hefty price, she felt a mix of emotions.
Come to think of it, she was the one who initiated the flirting with Yu Xin, but the way he gave her the gifts made it seem like she was being kept.
She sat down in the chair, feeling the box in her hands was unusually hot.
After pondering for a while, Shen Mengqing picked up her phone and replied to Yu Xin's message.
She typed and deleted text in the input box, biting her lower lip lightly, before finally sending it:
"This is too valuable, can I refuse it?"
Yu Xin replied almost instantly: "No."
He added, "I'm taking off now, that's all."
"..."
Shen Mengqing put down his phone and stared at the box, gradually becoming lost in thought.
Forget it, if Yu Xin is adamant about giving this gift away, there's nothing she can do about it no matter how she tries to reason with him. She might as well just give it back to him the next time they meet.
With that thought, she put the necklace in her bag and left the room.
