Chapter 38 Is it fun to lie to me?
Shen Mengqing was acting impulsively, feeling a sense of reckless courage, like someone leaving without a second thought. If this new chairman really rejected her approval process without any reason, she would definitely have a serious talk with him and give him a lecture on the law.
She pressed the elevator button with a snap and strode in with an air of authority.
Not long after, the elevator stopped again, the doors slowly opened, and Liang Ruwei walked in.
Shen Mengqing calmed down, smiled and nodded at her. She genuinely liked Liang Ruwei, for no particular reason, just because they were pleasing to the eye.
Liang Ruwei stopped beside her and said, "I heard you're resigning?"
There are no secrets in the company, as expected. What she mentioned yesterday has already spread to the public today.
"Yes, it's a pity that I didn't make it into the media department in the end," Shen Mengqing said.
Liang Ruwei sighed softly and said, "I'm the one who should feel sorry for you. I really appreciate your work ability. In my opinion, it's better for you to leave here, so you won't be suppressed by Liang Jun and can make good use of your abilities outside."
"Thank you, Sister Wei." Shen Mengqing smiled sincerely. Seeing that Liang Ruwei hadn't pressed a floor button, she guessed they were going to the same place and asked, "Are you also going to see the chairman?"
Liang Ruwei nodded and said softly, "I need to talk to him about something."
The elevator reached the top floor, and Shen Mengqing pressed the open button. She waited for Liang Ruwei to exit the elevator before following her out.
This was her first time on the floor where the chairman's office was located. This floor looked much more spacious and impressive than theirs. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, there was a very long reception desk, and the green plants on both sides were much greener and more lush than those in their office.
The colleague at the front desk was from the service department and clearly knew Liang Ruwei. After bowing to them, he led them to the office.
The office door was closed, so there must be someone inside. The receptionist led them to sit on the sofa by the door for a while and brought them two glasses of warm water.
Next to the chairman's office was a small office, probably for the special assistant and the board secretary. It was empty. Shen Mengqing thought that the new chairman had just taken office and hadn't had time to hire anyone yet.
Liang Ruwei took a sip of water before remembering to ask her, "What brings you here?"
"My resignation process has been stalled by the chairman. He said he wants to talk to me in person," Shen Mengqing said awkwardly.
Liang Ruwei paused, a dark glint flashing in her eyes, and cleared her throat, saying, "So that's how it is."
She put the cup back on the table and, seeing that Shen Mengqing seemed a little uneasy, smiled and said, "Don't be nervous. You're leaving anyway. Just answer his questions truthfully. He... isn't hard to get along with."
"You'll see when you meet her," Liang Ruwei said.
Hearing Liang Ruwei's words, it seemed that she was very familiar with this chairman. Shen Mengqing trusted her and felt a little more at ease.
About ten minutes later, the door suddenly opened, and Shen Mengqing's heart skipped a beat. A man and a woman walked out.
The woman was Li Fan, the HR manager, whom Shen Mengqing recognized. The man looked unfamiliar. She listened quietly to their conversation for a while and deduced that the man was the chairman's special assistant.
Liang Ruwei loosened her trouser legs, stood up, and said, "Assistant Chen, may I go in?"
"That's fine, Manager Liang. Chairman Yu is waiting for you inside," Assistant Chen replied.
Before leaving, Liang Ruwei patted Shen Mengqing on the shoulder.
Shen Mengqing looked at Li Fan with a blank expression. Only then did Li Fan notice her sitting there. She walked over and sat down next to her, saying, "Wait a little longer. After Manager Liang finishes his report, it will be your turn for a meeting."
"good."
She pressed her slightly aching temples, wishing she hadn't come so soon.
The door slammed shut again, sending up a gust of wind. The ground was spotless, without a speck of dust.
Li Fan waited with Shen Mengqing outside, occasionally bringing up topics to chat with her, all revolving around the daily work of the sales department. Shen Mengqing was exhausted from dealing with them; these questions were difficult enough to answer now, and she might be left speechless when facing the chairman later.
After a while, Li Fan's series of questions was finally interrupted by the door opening again.
Shen Mengqing made a mental effort to prepare herself and followed closely behind Li Fan toward the chairman's office.
Li Fan knocked lightly on the door and said, "Chairman Yu, Shen Mengqing from the sales department is here."
Then she led the people inside.
As soon as Shen Mengqing entered the office, a huge floor-to-ceiling window came into view. The high ceilings offered an unobstructed view of the city's landscape and layout. Every staggered road, the intersecting overpasses, the modern buildings of varying heights, and the greenery interspersed throughout created a breathtaking cityscape mosaic.
"Is this the standard layout for the chairman's office?" Shen Mengqing wondered inwardly.
She looked away and followed the direction of the sail.
Behind the large marble desk, a man in a suit sat in a chair, facing the view outside the window, with his back to them.
His back view looked very young, with neat, short hair at the back of his head, a fair neck, straight shoulders, a narrow waist, and a well-fitting suit that highlighted his slightly toned physique. He exuded a cool and noble air.
He was holding a piece of paper in his hand, his head bowed, it was unclear whether he was looking at the endless stream of cars below or carefully reading the words on the paper.
"You can go out now."
The man's voice was deep and even sounded somewhat familiar to Shen Mengqing.
Strange, why does she feel such a strong sense of familiarity?
Shen Mengqing blinked as she watched Li Fan walk out and close the door, and she began to feel nervous again.
She swallowed to moisten her throat and said, "Hello, Chairman Yu, I am Shen Mengqing from the sales department."
"Um."
No, that short "hmm" sound made her feel like she'd heard it countless times before.
The person in the chair turned around, and a pair of indifferent eyes looked at her through silver-rimmed glasses.
Shen Mengqing couldn't quite describe what she felt the moment she made eye contact with Yu Xin.
She felt her mind go blank for a long time, her ears were ringing as if she had tinnitus, and the parts that kept her body running seemed to have rusted and crashed.
Suddenly, it was as if someone had unexpectedly poured a bucket of cold water over her head, soaking her completely and causing her to shiver uncontrollably.
She instinctively took a half step back, her high heels clicking crisply on the ground, shattering all her understanding from the past six months.
It turns out that Yu Xin is the son of the former chairman.
No wonder I've run into him so many times in this office building; no wonder his father got sick recently; no wonder he said he was hiding something from me.
Countless fragments of her past life flashed through her mind, and she sifted through them to find a whole basketful of overlooked details, only then realizing how long she had been deceived.
Looking around, Yu Xin, sitting in the chair, seemed unfamiliar and distant. Standing in front of this high-ranking and powerful young master, she looked like a fooled clown.
Before coming in, she had spent a long time rehearsing her answers, imagining what questions the newly appointed chairman would ask her. Even her self-introduction just now seemed utterly ridiculous.
Shen Mengqing felt a chill run through her body. Before Yu Xin could speak, she said in a very soft voice, "Is it fun to lie to me?"
She told Yu Xin from the beginning that she worked at Yusheng, while Yu Xin had kept his identity a secret for so long. Did he feel like a fool when they were together before?
The two stood a distance apart, the air seemed to freeze, and the atmosphere was so tense that even the flying insects in the corner clung tightly to the ground, afraid of being caught in the crossfire.
Yu Xin placed the resignation letter printed by HR on the table and said in a deep voice, "Whether you believe it or not, I have wanted to be honest with you many times, including last night."
Shen Mengqing chuckled: "But you still didn't say it, did you? I remember saying that I don't like being lied to."
"So, what did you call me here for? To show off your chairmanship?" She was filled with disappointment and anger, her words sharp and barbed, her chest heaving and her breathing rapid.
Yu Xin placed his hand on the table, his gaze fixed on her: "I've come to persuade you to stay."
Shen Mengqing laughed in exasperation: "Trying to keep me here?"
Her blood boiled, she took a few steps forward, placed her hand on the desk, looked down at Yu Xin and said, "On what grounds are you trying to keep me here, as a former casual sex partner, or as the chairman of Yu Sheng?"
Yu Xin remained silent for a moment, then tapped her resignation letter with his fingertip. Ignoring her anger, he said calmly, "Of course we're discussing business here. Please have a seat."
He wanted to talk things out calmly.
But Shen Mengqing clearly didn't want to listen to him. She stared at him sharply and leaned over the table.
Yu Xin could only look at her and say, "I know what you went through in the sales department. Your plan was stolen by a colleague and won an award. Liang Jun deliberately sabotaged your performance, found reasons to transfer your clients to other people with connections, and blocked your transfer process without reason. There were other things, but I won't go into details."
Shen Mengqing looked at him with a gaze as sharp as a knife, and said with even more anger, "So, from the time I met you until now, you have known all about what I have been through, yet you have always watched my professional setbacks and embarrassments as an outsider, right?"
Yu Xin frowned: "Shen Mengqing, I really couldn't do anything before."
"Then at least you can tell me your identity, instead of knowing everything but saying nothing. That makes me look stupid." Shen Mengqing gritted her teeth.
Yu Xin pulled a stack of documents from the folder beside him, handed it to Shen Mengqing, and said:
"So, I want to compensate you if you're willing to stay. Although I'm currently under close scrutiny by the shareholders and can't make any sweeping changes to the company, what you've experienced isn't an isolated case in the company. I want those people to receive the punishment they deserve, and I need your help."
Shen Mengqing didn't want to engage with him and remained silent.
"Take a look first, okay?"
Yu Xin softened her tone a bit.
Shen Mengqing remained unmoved, so Yu Xin explained directly to her: "I want to hire you as the chairman's secretary."
"Secretary?" Shen Mengqing asked, frowning.
“Yes, you applied for the position of assistant to the chairman at Santong, and I can also give you the position of secretary, and the salary will be at least twice that of Santong,” Yu Xin said.
Shen Mengqing calmly asked him, "Why me?"
Yu Xin countered with, "How many years have you been with the company?"
Shen Mengqing said, "It's been almost five years."
What is the most core department in the company?
"Sale."
Yu Xin met her gaze directly and silently said that this was the reason.
He added, "Besides, you should know that I have just taken office and many shareholders are dissatisfied. They have put in countless people, and I don't trust anyone else."
“At least, I’m the one who knows you best,” Yu Xin said.
His words sounded utterly sarcastic. Shen Mengqing released his hand, stood up straight with a sense of distance, and said, "I don't think so. In my eyes, you are a complete stranger now."
Yu Xin spread out the printed agreement, placed a black pen next to it, and said, "I'm not in a hurry. You can take a closer look at this agreement."
Shen Mengqing didn't even glance at the things on the table: "I don't want to."
“Yu Xin, I don’t need your compensation. I just want you to approve the process right now. Besides, what you owe me isn’t the extra money from my secretary’s salary, but an apology.”
Shen Mengqing's gaze was piercing, and a raging fire was burning in his chest.
Yu Xin lowered her eyes and said earnestly, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have kept it from you. I should have told you the truth sooner."
Upon receiving the apology, Shen Mengqing showed no intention of forgiving him and left the office without looking back.
She was seething with anger, her eyebrows raised in a haughty manner. Li Fan and his assistant Chen were waiting at the door. When she came out with a brisk pace, Li Fan opened his mouth as if he wanted to ask her something, but Shen Mengqing's strides were too big, and before he could ask, she was already far away.
Li Fan shook his head, thinking to himself that it seemed like every departing colleague had such an arrogant phase before leaving.
...
When Chen Mo saw that Shen Mengqing looked extremely pale when she left, he knew that Yu Xin had not reached an agreement at all.
He walked into the office, where Yu Xin sat in a chair, his brows furrowed, staring at the agreement on the table in deep thought.
"The person didn't agree?" Chen Mo stopped in front of Yu Xin and asked.
Yu Xin didn't even look up, and coldly hummed in agreement.
Chen Mo observed Yu Xin's expression and said, puzzled, "Why does it have to be her? I can screen another batch of people for you."
Why must it be her?
Yu Xin repeated the sentence in his mind.
He was very agitated. He loosened his tie, stood up from his chair, and turned to look at the view outside the glass, which was shimmering in the sunlight.
After meeting Shen Mengqing yesterday, it felt like a hole had been ripped out of his heart, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't fill it. The wind was blowing in from all directions, making him ache.
She's quite carefree; she can come and go as she pleases.
Yu Xin's hands, which were resting on the back of the chair, gradually tightened, as if he wanted to grip something tightly.
He asked Chen Mo, "What time does the drinking party end tonight?"
Chen Mo said, "Around nine o'clock."
"Okay." Yu Xin picked up her coat. "You can go back after the party. I need to go somewhere."

Author's note: It's about to drop!
He appears glamorous and successful on the surface, but he can't handle his wife. [Very incompetent]
Xinzi won't really obstruct Aqing's process! That will be covered in the next chapter.
When I left my job, I also had exit interviews with HR and the regional manager, so I guess you could say I drew inspiration from a real-life experience, haha.
