Chapter 104: Noodles with Soybean Sauce
Li Yu was woken up by the alarm clock before dawn in the morning. Wen Xi set a time with him and they had to get up early to do their styling.
The unreality of yesterday made him toss and turn in bed until the early morning, when he forced himself to fall asleep. So when the barber was blowing his hair, he fell asleep leaning back in the chair.
When I was woken up, I was still a little confused: "Sister Wenxi?"
The makeup artist was packing up her tools, and the barber crossed his arms and teased Wenxi, "Where did you go with your brother last night? Look how tired you made him. He fell asleep as soon as he sat down, and even the makeup couldn't wake him up."
The makeup artist was laughing on the side, and Wenxi clapped her hands and scolded her with a smile: "Stop talking nonsense. If you think you have made enough money, I will help you blow the wind."
The makeup artist and the hairdresser ran away with their things: "Thank you!"
Wenxi turned around and saw Li Yu staring at the mirror in a daze. She gently patted his shoulder: "Xiaoyu?"
Li Yu looked incredulous, pointed at herself in the mirror, and asked Wen Xi: "Sister Wen Xi, is this really me?"
Xiaoyun covered her mouth and laughed.
Wenxi pulled Li Yu up and walked out: "It's you, it's you, it's you, let's go, we have to hurry to the airport."
Xiaoyun bought hot milk and sandwiches at a convenience store, and the few of them ate them together in the car to fill their stomachs.
The three of them waited at the airport for nearly an hour before they saw a noble blond man come out, followed by an assistant pushing luggage.
Wenxi walked up to Joshua and hugged him, then shook hands with the assistant.
They were already familiar with each other, so they just introduced Li Yu: "Joshua, this is Li Yu. He will be our tour guide during this week's trip. You can consult him if you have any questions about the gardens."
"Xiaoyu, this is Joshua, and this is his assistant, Garrett."
Li Yu was so nervous that his back was sweating. From the beginning till now, he had only one thought in his mind: "A living foreigner!"
Li Yu extended his hand under Wen Xi's encouraging eyes and said hello: "Nice to meet you, Mr. Abbott."
Joshua glanced at Li Yu from head to toe, and was quite satisfied with his taste. He shook hands with him and said, "Just call me Joshua."
After the two sides greeted each other, Wenxi led Joshua out and told him about the schedule for today and tomorrow, and then asked him, "Why didn't Zerlina come?"
Joshua shrugged and said, "She's been obsessed with an ancient notebook and is concentrating on translating it. She asked me not to disturb her."
Li Yu walked behind, side by side with Xiaoyun. He looked at Wenxi who was chatting and laughing with the "living foreigner" in front of him, and unconsciously clenched his hands. He thought thankfully that he didn't have the problem of sweating in his hands when he was nervous.
Xiaoyun quietly gestured to Li Yu, asking him to relax and not be nervous. Thinking back to when Sister Wenxi took her to see Joshua, she was so nervous that she almost couldn't breathe.
Xiaoyun said, "It's okay, we'll be fine after seeing each other a few more times." She was still very excited today, but she was able to completely control her emotions.
Although Garrett, who was pushing the luggage nearby, did not understand Chinese, he could understand the gestures and gave the two people a kind smile.
Joshua didn't want to waste time and even rejected Wenxi's suggestion to adjust to the jet lag, so they didn't go back to the hotel first, but went straight to have lunch and went directly to the first stop of the trip in the afternoon.
Joshua rejected the restaurant Wenxi had initially arranged. He sent a photo and said, "This is a restaurant that Zerlina highly recommended. She said this was her favorite place to go when she was studying abroad. She asked me to try it as soon as I got there."
Wenxi showed the photo to the driver, who immediately recognized it: "Hey, isn't this the one near Beijing University? It's not big, but it's quite old. Apart from the students and residents there, only people who have lived in Beijing for a long time know about it."
The driver checked the time and stepped on the accelerator: "We have to hurry, it's almost time for dinner."
Wenxi quickly said, "Master, then you have to choose an easy path."
The driver assured: "Don't worry, I know everything. I will definitely take you there before the queue."
He was very talkative, and then asked Joshua: "Where did you hear about this company?"
Wenxi acted as their translator and chatted with them all the way.
When they arrived, the restaurant had just been occupied. The driver said to Wenxi, "Send me a message in advance after you finish your meal, and I will come to pick you up."
A few of them found a seat by the window and sat down. Joshua had been looking around since he entered the store. The aroma wafting from the store seemed to arouse the gluttony in his stomach.
It wasn't busy yet, so the waiter came over with a small notebook and asked them what they ordered.
Garrett asked for Joshua, "No menu?"
The waiter pointed to the wall.
The two foreigners turned their attention to Wenxi. Joshua asked Garrett, "What is the Chinese name for the dish that Zerlina recommended?"
Garrett uttered three syllables with difficulty, which had almost nothing to do with the words "noodles with soybean paste".
Wenxi and the other two didn't understand at all.
The waiter who came to take the order miraculously understood what was said. He looked at the menu on the wall and read the section about noodles with soybean paste in English, then asked them which one they wanted.
Li Yu immediately looked at the waiter with admiration.
Joshua had never eaten it before, so Zerlina told him that all the flavors in this restaurant were worth trying, so he randomly picked a dish of deep-fried diced mushrooms and eggplant.
When Wenxi ordered her own portion, she asked him how he understood it. He wrote it down in his notebook and said with a smile, "I heard it a lot. I deal with them every day. Even the weirdest pronunciations become normal."
After they ordered, many people came into the store one after another. Most of them were students. Soon, a line formed at the door.
This experience was extremely new to Joshua, because he had never eaten in such a noisy restaurant. He asked Wenxi: "Is this lively environment and atmosphere what Zerlina said is the 'fireworks'?"
"I guess so," Wenxi said, "'The smell of fireworks' is mainly a scene full of the breath of life, like the life in the market."
She recalled her hometown and Qiushui Town: "For example, when I go home, my parents cook a table of dishes that I like, greet neighbors warmly when they meet, and there are people bargaining with buyers and sellers at the snack shops and roadside stalls in the market, and people playing chess, drinking tea and chatting at the intersection. These are all the 'smoke and firework'."
Wenxi's words were like a beginning, and also opened up Garrett's mouth. He talked about his childhood spent in the countryside of Country Y, his grandfather's farm, and the days of planting crops and herding sheep.
Joshua was surprised when he heard this: "So you used to live in a fairy tale!"
As they were chatting, someone called their table's number at the window and they needed to go and get their food.
