Chapter 7

Chapter 7

"You want to help out in the cafeteria?" The cafeteria auntie looked embarrassed. "That's a huge waste of your talent."

Jiang Fei choked on her sandwich. At this moment, someone patted her on the back, followed by a bold male voice, "Hey, are you coming to the cafeteria for a snack too?"

Whose voice could that be if not Gru?

Jiang Fei turned around and saw Gru sweating profusely, as if he had just finished exercising. She said, "I wanted to come to the cafeteria to help out." And to boost her reputation at the same time.

Gru asked in confusion: "Then you should go to the research institute to help, right? Otherwise, wouldn't your smart brain be wasted?"

She had also considered going directly to the research institute, but she was worried that it would be too conspicuous. After all, the person in charge of the base did not trust her 100% yet. "But..."

"Oh, Leon, are you here for a snack too?" Gru saw another acquaintance and greeted him warmly, but unfortunately the other party responded coldly, just nodded slightly. Gru said to Jiang Fei: "That's a teacher from the research institute, specializing in high tower research. You can chat with him. What's his name..."

He thought about it and said, "Oh yes, it's called exchanging experiences!"

The cafeteria auntie also said: "Yes, the work in the kitchen is not suitable for you."

Since Gru said so, even if Coin asks about it, he can say it was Gru's suggestion. Jiang Fei walked towards the man named Leon with a cup of water.

He sat in a secluded corner of the cafeteria, his thick glasses resting beside him. He was slowly eating his sandwich, and Jiang Fei's arrival broke this leisurely moment. She put down her water cup and sat across from him. "Gru asked me to chat with you. I heard him say you work at the research institute?"

It is called a research institute, but it is actually a very small office with a few computers and a printer. They find some second-hand information from the forum and print it out.

Hearing this, Leon put on his glasses again. His myopia was very severe. Even if Jiang Fei was sitting opposite him, he had to wear glasses to see her face clearly. He said, "Are you the new one?"

"Yes, I'm the new one who came yesterday. Can I visit the research institute later?" It was too inefficient for her to obtain materials by answering questions alone. She was thinking of teaching all her high school knowledge to others, but she was not sure about the scope of the questions in the tower yet, so visiting the research institute was just to be on the safe side.

Leon swallowed the sandwich and said, "It's possible, but don't have too high expectations. It can't be considered a research institute at all."

Jiang Fei had already prepared herself mentally. She nodded, lowered her head to eat the rest of the sandwich, and then followed Leon to the research institute. Along the way, the people who met Jiang Fei had different expressions on their faces, some were full of surprise, and some were alert and cautious.

The research institute is on the second floor of the office building, and the security is not that tight. Unlike yesterday when she went to the person in charge's office and had to swipe her card at every level, here, after reaching the second floor and turning left, she is at the research institute. It still uses a combination lock. Leon unlocked the door and pushed it open.

Behind the door is the entire view of the research institute. There are several tables in the not-so-big room with printed papers piled messily on them. The computers are in sleep mode, and the printer next to the computers is stuck with a half-printed paper.

"Ah... the printer seems to have problems again." Leon muttered softly. He opened the printer to see what was wrong.

On the other side of the room were several movable whiteboards with guesses about the tower's theme written on them. If she hadn't known that it was the end of the world, she would have thought she had mistakenly walked into a liberal arts office, and the guesses on the whiteboards looked more like predictions about the topic.

All this was both familiar and unfamiliar to Jiang Fei.

"This is totally different from what you imagined, isn't it?" Leon was tall, but he always hunched over out of habit. "How could I possibly guess the tower's questions in a place like this..."

Jiang Fei sorted out the printed materials and smelled a familiar scent of ink. When she was a class representative, she often helped the teacher to get papers from the printing room. She looked through these materials and found that they were all incomplete and there were many typos. It would be really impossible to guess the questions correctly based on such materials.

Yesterday when she was on the transport vehicle, she discovered that the universal writing system in this world is similar to English but not quite the same, both of which are phonetic. The amazing thing is that she knew the meaning of this novel writing system at the first sight.

This is probably the cheat given to her by the system, which means that she can understand both the common language and Chinese.

But for the indigenous people of this world, Chinese is a language that is difficult to imagine, let alone read and understand. It is not their fault. After all, there is a big difference between phonetic characters and ideographic characters.

Therefore, the work of the research institute is not only to collect information, but the collected information also needs to be studied before the specific meaning can be understood.

It is impossible for one person to complete such a huge workload. Thinking of this, Jiang Fei asked, "Are you the only one working here?"

"There were a few colleagues before." Leon leaned against his desk. "One of them accepted an invitation from another base because he saw that the base was not doing well. Two others unfortunately died during previous field activities."

"Do you mind if I use your office?"

"I don't mind." He shook his head and even took the initiative to push an office chair towards Jiang Fei for her to sit on.

She pulled a few sheets of printer paper from a stack, grabbed a marker, and two ballpoint pens of different colors.

First, write on the paper with a marker: Four compulsory examination syllabus for politics.

She closed her eyes and recalled the table of contents for the compulsory course four. The philosophy section consisted of two units. The first unit was about exploring the world and grasping its laws, and the second unit was about understanding society and value choices.

It was not difficult for Jiang Fei to memorize the knowledge points. She wrote quickly, writing down the knowledge points of each lesson in each unit.

Leon was so surprised that he was stunned for a few seconds, "You know this kind of writing?"

Jiang Fei didn't even raise his head, and said vaguely: "I just have a little understanding."

If this is just a rough understanding, then he and his former colleagues know almost nothing about this kind of writing.

After finishing the abbreviated version of the exam outline, Jiang Fei breathed a sigh of relief. She picked up the paper and read it several times. She asked Leon, "How much of the text can you understand?"

Leon leaned in to look, his glasses almost sticking to the paper. He said, "I can only understand a small part of it."

That's it, she rubbed her temples. People in the research institute could only understand a little bit, not to mention others. She now felt powerless as if she was trying to teach an illiterate person to take the college entrance examination.

"Forget it, let's take it slowly..." She didn't intend to finish it all at once. She used the printer to print out several copies of her exam outline, and the extra copies were for the members of the exploration team.

Jiang Fei's optical computer is still under application, so for now she can only use Leon's optical computer to contact the members of the exploration team. "Send a message and ask them to come here to get the information."

Leon did as he was told, but his expression changed when he received the reply. "Lucian said he's busy right now, and he told you to stay in the institute and not wander around."

"Did something happen?" Jiang Fei stood up and walked to the window. She opened the curtains a little and looked out. She saw a group of people in black uniforms outside the office building. Their leader was Bill, who had suspected her yesterday. "Why are they here?"

Bill's five senses were very sharp, and Jiang Fei was almost caught. She dodged and hid behind the curtains. Leon said, "Lucian said that the captain of the Sky City Guard came to our base."

"I've seen it. Wait - don't come over. He might find out that we are peeping." Jiang Fei made a stop gesture.

Leon was puzzled, "The captain of the guard came to us... Is it Sky City's intention?"

Regardless of whether it was Sky City's intention or not, Jiang Fei only knew that they had ill intentions.

"Captain Bill, what brings you to our base so suddenly?" Anna hurried over from the training ground. "We're such a small place, we probably don't have what you're looking for."

Bill withdrew his gaze from the office building window. "Really? That's not necessarily the case. Sky City sent me to eliminate the pollutants. In addition to Sky City's efforts, we also need your contributions. After all, you are still alive today because of Sky City's protection."

Anna understood what he said. Wasn't that just conscription in disguise? And the kind that would lead them to their deaths? The people of Sky City considered themselves superior to those in the Underground City, and they didn't even care about the lives of the Underground City people.

"Excuse me for refusing, but my team just came back from outside yesterday and haven't even had a few days' rest yet. I'm afraid I can't satisfy you."

Bill raised an eyebrow. "That's fine, let's just replace him with someone else." He looked at the little boy not far away and smiled. "Son, do you want to see the outside world? Judging from your age, you probably haven't seen what the outside world looks like. What a shame."

Seeing that he was directly targeting underage children, Anna couldn't stand it anymore. She gritted her teeth and said, "You are sending him to his death!"

"It is the highest honor to die for Sky City." Bill looked down at Anna with an indifferent expression.

"What kind of honor is this—"

"Anna, don't get too excited. Captain Bill is a guest after all." Coyne's old voice came from behind. She maneuvered the wheelchair into everyone's sight, with her young assistant following beside her.

The wheelchair stopped in front of Bill, and Coyne said, "Long time no see, Bill. The last time I saw you, you were still a child, just like him." Coyne looked at the little boy who had just been called by Bill.

Bill sneered, "Yeah, it's been a while, Ms. Coyne. The last time I saw you you weren't in a wheelchair."

Not only is he not in a wheelchair, he is even a member of Sky City.
