Chapter 2

Wan Qiu sat quietly in the car, unusually well-behaved.

He had never ridden in a car like this before. The car was clean and beautiful. It didn't smell of gasoline as he remembered; instead, it had a faint smell of smoke, which was much better than the smell of smoke on his father.

Wan Qiu glanced at the man in the driver's seat. The man, though not looking at him, seemed to sense his gaze and lowered his voice to comfort him gently: "Don't worry, the hospital isn't far, we'll be there soon."

Wanqiu unconsciously reached out to cover his wound again to prevent the blood from flowing down and staining the car seat.

"Don't touch it," the man stopped him. "Your hands are dirty."

Wanqiu looked at his palms, which were covered in blood and dust, and was at a loss.

Wan Qiu was taken to the hospital. The bright and beautiful hospital lobby was even brighter than the most beautiful building he had ever seen, the school. Wan Qiu was pulled by the man and followed obediently until he saw the middle-aged doctor in the white coat.

When the doctor examined Wanqiu's wound, he planned to cut off his clothes, but Wanqiu said, "Can I not cut them? I can roll up my sleeves."

"You'll touch the wound," the doctor warned.

"It's alright." Wan Qiu was about to roll up her sleeves.

"It's just a piece of clothing, it's gone if it's gone," the man said, stopping Wan Qiu's actions.

Wan Qiu pursed his lips, not wanting this durable garment to be cut up. It was a precious piece of clothing his mother had bought for him. He looked up at the man.

When Wan Qiu glanced at the man, he suddenly felt a strange sense of being closely observed. The child's gaze inexplicably made him feel uneasy.

"I understand." Wan Qiu agreed, but this reluctant compromise made the man very uncomfortable.

The man frowned, then for some reason gave in: "I understand, I'll help you, just bear with the pain."

The man stood helplessly in front of Wan Qiu, bent down, and carefully rolled up his sleeves. As he did so, the fabric seemed to stick to the wound, and he felt a slight tearing sensation.

The man observed Wan Qiu's expression and found that he showed no signs of endurance, seemingly unaffected by the pain of the clothes rubbing against his wounds.

However, the fully exposed arm shocked the men and doctors present. On the thin and delicate arm, there were several bruises and swellings, and even many wounds that had already scabbed over.

"You were beaten?" The doctor, who was very clear about all kinds of injuries, suddenly glared fiercely at the man behind Wan Qiu, wondering whether he should call the police.

“No, I wasn’t hit,” Wan Qiu suddenly said.

"You weren't beaten..."

"I wasn't hit." Wan Qiu stated her position very firmly, and the doctor hesitated for a moment.

"Excuse me, doctor, please treat the wound first." The man looked at the marks on Wan Qiu's arm with a very complicated expression, then suddenly turned and left.

After the man left, the doctor earnestly asked Wan Qiu, "Don't be afraid. If you were hit, just tell me and I'll call the police for you."

Wan Qiu simply shook his head.

The doctor frowned, somewhat helpless.

When the man who left returned, he brought someone with him.

Wan Qiu glanced back at the other person, but his attention was inexplicably drawn to the people the man had brought with him.

The man was slightly shorter than the man, but his presence was far superior. He was a middle-aged man dressed in simple summer clothes, with his hair neatly styled. He was extremely handsome, tall and slender, and had a refined air about him.

After the middle-aged man entered, he kept looking at Wan Qiu. Wan Qiu looked up to observe the middle-aged man's expression. The man's eyes were complicated, mixed with many emotions that Wan Qiu could not understand.

"You are..." The doctor hesitated for a moment, then looked surprised, upon seeing the middle-aged man. "Mr. Chu? You?"

"Take good care of your wound." Chu Jianshu's expression darkened slightly when he saw the wound on Wan Qiu's arm, but he remained silent.

"Ah, yes." The doctor was puzzled, but vaguely sensed that the child in front of him might have some connection with Mr. Chu. Therefore, he was gentler when facing Wan Qiu than before. "Don't be afraid. Although it will hurt a little, this is how sterilization and disinfection work. Just bear with it."

Wan Qiu nodded; the doctor's movements were very gentle.

Chu Jianshu stared at Wan Qiu's profile. Wan Qiu looked at the wound, which was slightly gruesome, but Wan Qiu seemed to have little feeling of pain. His expression was calm, and his body did not have any reaction to pain. His eyes were peaceful.

It's a bit strange.

Wanqiu's wounds had been bandaged with snow-white gauze, and the wounds on his hands had been re-treated with medicine.

"Although there doesn't seem to be a problem right now, we should still take an X-ray just in case to see if it's affecting the bones," the doctor said, operating the computer.

"Doctor, please order a blood test for this child," Chu Jianshu said.

"A blood test?" The doctor was a little puzzled, but Mr. Chu said he would do whatever he wanted, so the doctor replied, "Okay, I understand."

Wanqiu watched the doctor operate the computer and print out a form for the man.

The man took the form, and Wan Qiu couldn't even see the contents of it.

Wan Qiu walked with the man the whole time, taking pictures, drawing blood, doing whatever he asked without any resistance, only occasionally glancing back at 'Mr. Chu'.

Mr. Chu's gaze was strange; it didn't seem like he was asking him for anything, nor did it seem like he had something to say.

Wan Qiu didn't know how to judge, so he remained silent and didn't speak.

While sitting side by side with Mr. Chu waiting for the film, Wan Qiu kept her head down, staring intently at her legs, as quiet as if they didn't exist.

Unexpectedly, it was Mr. Chu, who had been by his side the whole time, who broke the silence first: "Does it hurt?"

Wan Qiu glanced around and, seeing that it was just the two of them, confirmed that they were talking to him before replying, "It doesn't hurt."

"Were you scared during the car accident?" Chu Jianshu asked again.

"I'm a little surprised." It was surprise, not fear, Wan Qiu replied.

Silence descended once again.

Wan Qiu wasn't curious about the man beside her, but she was puzzled by his deliberate act of talking to her.

Why should I talk to him?

Wan Qiu couldn't understand it.

When Wan Qiu followed Mr. Chu, he saw a long queue in the doctor's office, but they went straight to the front.

"Fortunately, no bones were broken." The doctor greeted them first and said after looking at the X-rays, "This child is quite resilient, but the flesh and skin injuries are still quite severe."

"Thank you, doctor," Mr. Chu said.

"Oh, no, no." The doctor was clearly flattered.

Can we go now?

Wan Qiu was puzzled. He looked up at Mr. Chu's expression and realized that the person who was truly useful at the moment was Mr. Chu. However, unfortunately, he did not receive any of Mr. Chu's requests.

Wanqiu saw the driver who caused the accident again in the hospital lobby.

The driver was ashen-faced, and standing beside him was a tall, blond man who cowered like a chick being led around by a thug.

"Let's discuss this and settle this privately," the driver said anxiously as soon as he saw Wan Qiu. "Call your parents over, and I'll pay some money."

The two tall men exchanged a glance, and Mr. Chu bent down slightly to accommodate Wan Qiu's shorter stature, handing him his phone: "Call your parents and have them come over."

Wan Qiu held up his phone and saw that Mr. Chu's phone wallpaper was a photo of a family of five, all of whom were very good-looking, with the lady of the house being as beautiful as a celebrity.

It looks like a photo from when she was young. The woman doesn't look well, and none of the family members seem to be smiling.

Without looking closely, Wan Qiu dialed the phone number.

Chu Jianshu reached out and helped Wan Qiu press the dial button, even pressing the speakerphone button as he did so.

"Who is it?" came a woman's hazy, sleepy voice, clearly annoyed at being woken up.

Wan Qiu hesitated for a moment, then, holding her phone, said, "Mom, it's me."

"Are you crazy? Where did you call me from?" The woman became impatient and sharp the moment she heard Wan Qiu's voice, her attitude obviously hostile.

"I'm in the hospital. I was in a car accident, and some kind people are helping me," Wan Qiu briefly described her current situation.

"What do you mean? You want me to pay?" The woman's voice instantly rose. "You good-for-nothing, you unlucky bastard..."

The string of curses made Chu Jianshu's face look rather unpleasant, and a layer of gloom settled on his usually refined and handsome face.

Wan Qiu ignored the harsh words and showed no change in expression, simply saying, "It wasn't Mom, it was the driver who asked me to find you. He said, settle it privately, pay him."

"Give me money?" The woman's voice became more alert as if she had heard about money, and she was clearly interested. "Sure, which hospital are you at? I'll come over right away."

The stark contrast caused the two tall men who had been listening nearby to glance nervously at Chu Jianshu's expression.
