Chapter 5

Wanqiu is doing her homework.

He has difficulty concentrating and does his homework very slowly. It takes him several times longer than other students to complete the same amount of homework.

They spend their days collecting trash outside and their evenings focusing on their summer homework.

Even with the bedroom door closed, the noise still emanated from the cramped bedroom, disrupting Wanqiu's already difficult-to-concentrate thoughts.

Ning Hai came back today because Ning Qiaozhen told him that he had suddenly received 5,000 yuan. Ning Hai, who had been missing for a long time, immediately brought a group of friends home to spend this unexpected money.

My parents don't like to save money. Once they have money, they quickly spend it all. They live frugally the rest of the time, which is why Wanqiu developed the habit of scavenging.

Ning Qiaozhen bought a lot of takeout, while Ning Hai and the others brought a lot of alcohol. They were already quite drunk, and the noise was deafening.

Wanqiu couldn't concentrate, staring unconsciously at the snow-white bandage on her wrist.

The bandages are very clean; after washing them, they should be usable again.

"Wanqiu!!!" Ning Qiaozhen's sharp female voice was extremely jarring among the group of men's voices.

Wan Qiu immediately put down his pen, stood up, opened the bedroom door, and stood in front of a group of men who were red-faced and shirtless, drinking heavily in the sweltering summer night.

"Hey, Wan Qiu's here! I didn't see him when I came in, I thought he wasn't here." Ninghai's friend laughed as soon as he saw Wan Qiu, and put his arm around Wan Qiu's neck to pull him down. "Come on, sit down, have you eaten yet?"

Wan Qiu didn't adjust his posture to sit properly. The thin Wan Qiu seemed to be only a third the size of the man, and the man's huge arms were like a mountain pressing down hard on his neck.

On the table in front of Wan Qiu, there were takeout orders scattered haphazardly in plastic bags and boxes, a messy pile, along with spilled beer, greasy soup, and the smells of food, alcohol, smoke, and sweat permeated the narrow, old rented living room.

"Come on, let Wanqiu have a taste of the wine too." The man directly pointed the wine bottle in his hand at Wanqiu's mouth.

"Hahahaha, what kind of pervert are you! How could you give a child alcohol?" A man beside him slapped the man on the back, causing the bottle in his hand to sway and spill a lot of alcohol.

"Men should drink, and Wanqiu is a man too, isn't he?" The man wasn't angry, and joked, "From now on, men who can drink will be more popular with girls!"

Several people burst into laughter.

"Wanqiu, go out and buy some barbecue, and bring back two cases of beer, no, three cases." Ning Qiaozhen took out a wad of cash from her pocket and put it in Wanqiu's hand. "If there's any left, buy yourself some snacks."

Wanqiu counted the money; Ning Qiaozhen had given him enough, and indeed, there was more than he had.

As Wan Qiu stood up, the man who was holding him patted his waist hard: "Go quickly, Uncle is thirsty."

Wan Qiu nodded, took the money and left, followed by a chaotic commotion.

Wanqiu couldn't carry three cases of beer, but he was very skilled at it. He found a wooden plank with wheels in a storage area downstairs in the dilapidated neighborhood. Originally a pushcart, Wanqiu asked the garbage collector to repair it, turning it into a small cart that could be used to transport things.

As Wan Qiu emerged from the old residential area, he immediately attracted the attention of two people who were resting in their car.

"What's he doing out so late at night?" The blond man frowned.

"They must have been sent out to buy alcohol." The man noticed the small trailer being towed behind Wan Qiu; they had seen it several times during their time following them.

Ninghai is back today, so he should be ordering Wanqiu around.

The man rubbed his temples. They had just received information that Wan Qiu was the boss's youngest son, and that they were to take care of and protect Wan Qiu.

The boss made it very clear that if anything really happens, they can step in.

"Come on," the man patted his companion on the shoulder, "follow along and see if there's anything we can do to help."

"Okay." The blond man also got out of the car, and the two tall men walked side by side behind Wan Qiu.

The small cart in Wanqiu was not tied with soft hemp rope, but with plastic rope used to tie up boxes. If it was loaded with heavy beer, it would be very difficult to pull.

Because it's an old neighborhood, and the area is remote with ongoing road repairs, people have to go even further to shop, making the rent here exceptionally cheap.

Under the pitch-black sky, there were few pedestrians on the road. Two tall men followed a child at a distance that made people turn their heads, but they immediately looked away because the men looked menacing.

"This kid is so careless," the blond man said in a low voice.

"There's really nothing to be wary of." He looks like a penniless wretch.

The blond man asked, "Wasn't he injured today? How can he still bring in alcohol like that?"

The man didn't speak, but suddenly remembered what the boy had said when he took him to the hospital earlier that day.

— "Minor injury" or "this level of injury".

Wanqiu first went to the store and picked up three cases of beer, placing them on his small cart.

"You're here to buy beer for your dad again?" The shop owner kindly found a rope and secured the beer to the cart. "Be careful on your way back, don't break it like last time, or your dad will beat you again."

Wan Qiu nodded.

"Have you eaten yet?" the shop owner asked.

Wan Qiu blinked but didn't say anything.

The shop owner grumbled, "Wait here for a minute. What kind of father is he? All he cares about is eating all day long."

The shop owner took out a bag of bread that had clearly been opened and half-eaten, and gave it to Wan Qiu: "Eat it."

Wanqiu, holding the bread, looked up and smiled at the shop owner: "Thank you, Auntie."

"Oh my, this child has such a beautiful smile." The shop owner couldn't help but smile too.

Goodbye, Auntie.

The blond man standing nearby gritted his teeth: "Damn it, I can't stand it anymore. The boss's son is eating other people's leftovers here..."

"Hey." The man pulled his companion back. When Wan Qiu turned around, he was facing them directly, and the two of them saw Wan Qiu's expression.

Wan Qiu smiled, her delicate and beautiful eyebrows relaxing as she looked at the bread in her hand. She was very happy and even took a big bite without waiting.

The blond man was speechless for a moment: "fuck..."

Wan Qiu seemed completely oblivious to the two people blocking his way. Without even looking up, he focused on eating his bread, his thin body leaning forward as he forcefully pulled his beer bottle behind them, brushing past them.

The blond man was furious: "Don't ever take this kind of job again! I'd rather deal with someone cheating or get into a fight than see this...this...this is infuriating..."

The man said nothing, but his fingers tapped rapidly on his phone, constantly reporting messages, and he also took a picture of Wan Qiu's back and sent it to her.

He soon received a reply from his boss: Help him, I'm coming over now.

The man replied: "Boss, you don't need to come over. He's already gone upstairs. We'll keep a close eye on things."

The boss hesitated for a moment before replying: "I understand, thank you."

The man put his phone away and sighed, "This job is really tough."

The man suddenly realized that his companion was gone.
