Chapter 10: Loss of Control Distance Supervision Agreement has always been my blatant...
Night fell outside the window, and Gu Yifeng had been standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window in the hotel lobby for twenty minutes.
The phone screen remained stubbornly dark.
He called again—still no answer.
He won't be stood up, right?
Thinking of this, his brows furrowed tighter and tighter, and he turned and walked towards the front desk.
"What did you say? When did it happen?" Gu Yifeng's cold gaze made the hotel receptionist tremble subconsciously.
"The guest at 0926...left this morning." The receptionist stammered.
"Did you leave on your own or with someone?" Gu Yifeng's tone carried the oppressive feeling of interrogation.
"We don't know about this either." The manager explained cautiously.
"If you're not sure, check the surveillance!" Gu Yifeng's tone left no room for doubt.
The receptionist and the manager looked at each other in confusion but didn't dare to ask any more questions.
"I'll transfer you if I tell you to. The formalities will be completed later."
Hearing this, the hotel manager nodded helplessly.
Gu Yifeng stared at the screen seriously until Wen Yi appeared in the center of the screen.
She pushed her luggage and followed a strange man in a hurried pace.
His face darkened instantly.
"Stop, replay the last ten seconds."
The man in the picture is tall and wears sunglasses and a hat.
When passing by the camera, he skillfully turned his head away, so that no clear facial image could be captured.
Where did this man come from? She just ran away with him?
He was still thinking about how to write the report and how to leave her a way out, but she turned around and ran away with someone?
But...will she really leave on her own initiative?
He frowned slightly, and a name emerged in his mind - Guo Qingyu.
If he was the one who did it... then that makes sense. She didn't just leave without saying goodbye, someone coaxed her away.
He immediately made a phone call: "Gao Yiyuan, activate the A3 tracking protocol. Also, help me track down Guo Qingyu's whereabouts."
After hanging up the phone, Gu Yifeng sat in the car waiting for the location information. The engine made a low roar, just like his mood at the moment.
His taut jawline was reflected in the rearview mirror. He hadn't been this angry in a long time.
He still overestimated his importance in her heart.
If he hadn't been so obsessed with getting her to trust him rather than "obey," he should have given her a tracking chip from the start. If he hadn't been so wishful thinking that she would stay, he wouldn't be so passive now, not even knowing where she was going.
The funny thing is, he once thought that there was some special bond between him and Wen Yi, but what happened? It was just his wishful thinking.
The phone vibrated, and the A3 tracking protocol was activated.
On the car's display screen, a red dot representing Wen Yi was flashing somewhere in the city center.
He gritted his teeth and stepped on the accelerator to the bottom.
He ran three red lights and changed lanes twice illegally - this was the first time he violated traffic rules for personal matters.
I followed the flashing red dot until it stopped in front of an apartment building.
*
“Dongdongdong——”
Wen Yi's fingertips were still hanging on the zipper of the suitcase, and the rapid knock on the door startled her whole body.
Who can find her new address?
Wen Yi saw Gu Yifeng's cold face through the cat's eye and her heart skipped a beat.
Oops! It seems she forgot to answer the phone!
Before Wen Yi could completely open the door, a slender hand had already got stuck in the gap.
Gu Yifeng strode in directly, his black clothes and black pants were not as dark as his face at the moment.
"Is your cell phone just for show?" Gu Yifeng asked in a cold tone, as if he was collecting a debt. "Or has Miss Wen been in the mountains for so long that she's used to sending messages by carrier pigeon or smoke signals?"
Wen Yi glanced at the red-feathered bird standing on the table eating melon seeds. You know what, my guess was almost right.
She had just finished moving and only found a bottle of water for him. She explained, "I was so busy moving today that I didn't pay attention to my phone. I'll be more careful next time."
She noticed that Gu Yifeng's eyes swept around the room, finally landing on her half-unpacked suitcase, and suddenly said, "Are you living here now?"
"yes."
He was silent for a moment, then asked, "Who is the man who left the hotel with you?"
"...You're investigating me?" Wen Yi suddenly looked up, eyes full of shock, "Why?"
"It's my responsibility as a supervisor." Gu Yifeng said as a matter of course.
"Don't worry about it, that's my brother." She hugged her chest and turned her head away from him.
"Brother?"
“…I guess so, right?”
"Then it's not." Gu Yifeng said firmly.
"Does this have anything to do with the supervisor?" Wen Yi's voice was filled with dissatisfaction. "Can't the suspect contact his family?"
Gu Yifeng took a step closer: "According to the supervision agreement, as a supervisor, I have the right to know everyone you come into contact with."
Wen Yi frowned: "Is this included in the supervision agreement?"
"Supplementary terms: You need to report your itinerary in advance every day, including where you're going, who you're traveling with, and your expected return time." Gu Yifeng said calmly, "Effective from now on."
"Why?!" Wen Yi's voice suddenly rose. "You're checking my whereabouts and even asking who I meet. What do you think of me? Your prisoner?"
"You've violated the supervision agreement." His voice was cold and hard. "You've betrayed my trust in you."
"You're talking to me about trust?" Wen Yi was shaking with anger. "I clearly didn't do anything, but I was inexplicably treated as a suspect. I chose to stay and help you solve the case because I trust you, but have you ever trusted me?"
She suddenly stood on tiptoe and approached him, "Why don't you just lock me in a cage? Who do you think you are to me? If I had known this would happen, I might as well have gone with my brother..."
"Wen Yi!" Gu Yifeng suddenly grabbed her wrist, "You want to go with him? You want to break the contract?"
Her pulse was pounding wildly in her palm, and she couldn't tell whose heartbeat was more chaotic. Wen Yi wanted to pull her hand back, but he held it firmly.
“…This is none of your business!”
The air suddenly condensed.
An invisible energy wave spread from her body, and the air suddenly turned cold.
She saw Gu Yifeng's breathing become rapid, his face changed, and his body trembled. He held her hand tightly and managed to stand steady.
The watch began to vibrate, flashing a glaring warning: [Grade 0.3 Gravitational Distortion]
The ceiling lights began to flicker, making a slight hissing sound of electricity, and the surrounding air distorted and swayed like a mirror in flames.
They both looked up at the same time, and the chandelier light bulb exploded with a "pop", and glass fragments fell everywhere. Before Wen Yi could react, he pulled her into his arms and used his arms to block the flying debris for her.
Wen Yi was stunned. What did she do?
The power was still trembling faintly, as if realizing something, she pushed him away suddenly: "Go! Get out of here!"
She watched him stagger back, his face instantly turning pale.
The next second, he collapsed to the ground, a layer of cold sweat oozing from his forehead.
"Wen Yi... stop..."
Stop? Wen Yi smiled bitterly. She didn't know how to stop.
Wen Yi's face was pale, and her lips trembled slightly. She was angry with him, but she never wanted him to get hurt.
"Then I'll leave." She had a blank look in her eyes and rushed out of the door in a daze.
“Don’t go!”
His voice was hoarse and filled with suppressed pain.
As soon as she took a step, he hugged her tightly from behind, "I won't leave your side." A trace of surprise flashed in her eyes. Isn't he... afraid of her?
The room fell silent, and the terrifying energy fluctuations stopped instantly.
Wen Yi's head began to ache again, her body was shaking with cold, and even her breath seemed to be frosted.
The warmth coming from her waist could not be ignored. She finally stopped feeling cold and her heart warmed up.
"It's okay," he whispered, his arm still around her waist, his warm breath brushing against her ear. "Are you okay?"
Wen Yi was stunned.
Did he even know what he was talking about? He was injured himself, yet he only cared about asking if she was okay.
She bit her lip and asked softly, "...What about you? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Gu Yifeng let her go, a faint smile on his face, "Be careful of broken glass."
He began to pick up the broken glass on the ground, his movements still neat, but she noticed that he was a little unsteady when he walked.
Wen Yi stood there, staring blankly at him busying around. She was still angry with him, but the sight of his swaying figure made her heart clench.
Gu Yifeng finished cleaning up quickly, turned around and looked at her as if nothing had happened, his eyes gentle: "You must be hungry. Come on, I'll take you to eat something." As if the loss of control just now was just an illusion.
*
On the way back from the hotel, it was raining heavily and the black SUV stalled in front of Wen Yi's house.
The car was silent, and the rain was hitting the window glass, blurring the vision.
"What happened today..." Gu Yifeng's voice was very light, "I ignored your feelings."
Wen Yi was startled and turned to look at him.
"The agreement will never be mentioned again. As long as you don't disappear at will again, I won't interfere with your freedom." His tone was light but with a hint of restraint.
She should have breathed a sigh of relief, but now she felt a tightness in her chest.
Wen Yi looked away, gazing out the window at the rain. Before today, she'd thought her ability was just a memory recall, but now she wasn't so sure. If her ability could hurt people, if it could become a threat, then she shouldn't be here.
She placed her hand lightly on the car door handle, her voice so soft it was almost drowned out by the sound of the rain: "I will return to the mountains. I will not re-enter the world until your case is solved."
A hand suddenly came over her with such force that she frowned.
"What did you say?" He said in a low voice, almost questioning.
She had never seen him so out of control.
"Give me a reason?"
"I don't want to hurt... you."
"You didn't hurt me, so you can't leave!"
"But……"
"No buts." His voice was low and tight. "This is not something you can decide. Don't mention it again."
Wen Yi lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze and asked, "What if I really hurt you? What if I really made a mistake? How are you going to deal with me?"
He was silent for a moment, and his voice was soft, unlike him: "I never care whether you are wrong or not."
"But am I not a suspect in the case?" She raised her head, a hint of doubt in her eyes.
"You're more than just a suspect to me." He spoke slowly, his eyes becoming deeper. "You once asked me if I had found that person yet?"
His thumb brushed against her slender wrist bone, sending a burning sensation through her skin.
"It took me fifteen years to get to the point where I could protect her." His voice was hoarse, as if he was gritting his teeth.
Silence is noisy in the sound of rain.
Wen Yi's breath stagnated in her chest, and her hand, which was covered by Gu Yifeng, clenched slightly.
He suddenly smiled: "The person I've been waiting for has finally grown up."
The voice was so low that it was almost drowned out by the sound of the rain, but it reached her ears clearly.
His fingertips slid into her palm, and the moment their fingers were clasped together, he suddenly tightened his grip and held her in his arms.
The rain poured down suddenly, like a belated catharsis.
He leaned forward, his thin lips almost touching hers, their breaths entwined, and every word he spoke crushed all of Wen Yi's retreats:
"Wen Yi, the supervision agreement was never a matter of official business. It was my blatant selfishness." His calloused palm rested on the back of her neck, pressing her towards him irresistibly. "It's my obsession to protect you for the past fifteen years."
Wen Yi's heart was beating like thunder and she forgot to breathe.
The raindrops condensed into a still galaxy the moment they touched the car window.
Billions of water droplets broke free from gravity, and the entire rain curtain began to flow backwards.
The watch screen flashed a red warning: [Grade 0.1 Gravitational Distortion]
Gu Yifeng's lips were only millimeters away from her, and his hot breath burned the tips of Wen Yi's ears red.
The raindrops suspended around her trembled slightly with her accelerated heartbeat.
Her eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings, and she closed her eyes unconsciously.
