Chapter 109 Frost Pine Bracelet Can I leave some space in your life...

Chapter 109 Frost Pine Bracelet Can I leave some space in your life...

Wen Yi's eyes trembled slightly, and she looked up at Gu Yifeng, her voice still a little hoarse: "How do you know... that the superpower was activated by itself? Instead of... them monitoring... and then saving me?" Her breathing was stagnant and her speech was a little intermittent.

Gu Yifeng sat by the bed. After she finished asking, he reached out and placed a pillow behind her, helping her lean against the headboard. Then he slowly spoke, "I wasn't sure at first."

He looked at her and recalled, "When I carried you out of the house, you were already unconscious, but the energy fluctuations continued. The distorted air field hadn't dissipated, protecting you like a barrier."

"If they intervene, it should be to eliminate the threat—for example, by remotely shutting off the source of the poison gas."

"But that energy fluctuation..." He paused, as if weighing his words, "is more like an autonomous defense mechanism—continuous, unconscious, and at all costs, preventing the threat from approaching. It's not like 'surveillance,' but more like... a genetic stress response, a bit like the immune system fighting a virus."

Wen Yi was startled, her fingertips pinching into her palm unconsciously. Something seemed to flash through her mind, but she couldn't catch it.

Gu Yifeng continued, "I had suspicions and guesses about this, so I immediately had the emergency team collect an additional DNA blood sample from when you were unconscious, at the peak of your poisoning."

He pulled out an encrypted folder from his tablet, opened it, and handed it to her. It was a report marked as expedited for the "Preliminary Screening of Gene Expression."

"I sent the samples to Chris's lab overnight for genome-wide dynamic expression comparison."

Wen Yi felt dizzy after hearing this. The English text was densely packed in front of her eyes. She raised her hand and gently pushed the tablet back: "...What's the result?"

He put the tablet away and looked at her pale face. "Preliminary results show that multiple silent psychiatric gene loci, such as LX-7 and NRX-3, were significantly activated during your coma."

"So, yesterday's energy fluctuations were not the result of their remote intervention, but... the activation of the superpower gene."

Wen Yi's breathing hitched, and her eyes widened slightly. She vaguely remembered that in her dream, the ball of light had said that her physiological signals were abnormal—she had thought it was nonsense at the time, but it turned out... it was true!

But since they noticed the abnormality, why didn't they intervene?

"My guess is—" Gu Yifeng leaned closer, her blank eyes reflected in his pupils, "the so-called 'surveillance' doesn't mean staring at you all the time."

"It will only be triggered when your consciousness actively calls upon your supernatural power."

Wen Yi was stunned, her heart beating like a drum. It was as if a ray of light had split the long-standing fog.

Gu Yifeng leaned in close, his breath mingling with hers. She vaguely caught a whiff of tobacco. While she was lost in thought, he had quietly grasped her hand, the one not receiving the IV drip.

Seeing that she didn't struggle, he calmly unfolded her curled fingers and held theirs.

Their palms touched, and warmth slowly seeped into her cold fingertips.

His fingertips gently rubbed the veins on the back of her hand: "After you lost consciousness yesterday, your body was on the verge of death and instinctively issued a command for survival."

He lowered his eyes, ignoring her surprise, and continued, "The superpower gene responded to the instructions and was activated without 'them' knowing."

"But I didn't feel anything at the time."

Gu Yifeng nodded: "Genetic self-rescue may be beyond conscious control."

Wen Yi blinked, looking at him but also looking into nothingness. Unknowingly, she woke up and found herself on the verge of life and death.

Her cold and numb knuckles gradually warmed up and revived under his repeated massage. She wanted to withdraw her hand, but he held it tightly in his palm and refused to let go.

She stared down at their clasped hands. Though she was still furious with him, her body clung to the warmth of his palm. Perhaps it was the fragility of her illness that made her crave even more. If he held her tightly now, she wouldn't refuse.

His conflicting thoughts turned into completely irrelevant words: "So... we can fool them?"

Gu Yifeng stretched out his hand, but did not hug her as she wished. Instead, he gently stroked the hair on her forehead.

"Maybe."

Gu Yifeng's words didn't actually provide any conclusion, but Wen Yi felt strangely at ease, as if his words were the only correct answer. She thought for a moment and asked, "Then what should we do?"

"Now that we have a hypothesis," he returned to his usual rational style, "the next step is to design an experiment to verify it."

Then he changed the subject, "But——"

She asked curiously, "But what?"

"The most important thing now," he stared at her pale face, "is that you take care of your body."

Wen Yi: “…”

The room became quiet.

She glanced at Gu Yifeng's injured hand and asked casually, "What happened to your hand? Did you hurt it when you saved me?"

Gu Yifeng looked down at the scar and shook his head nonchalantly: "It's okay—"

There was a knock on the door, and Chris walked in wearing a camel coat and holding a bouquet of flowers. He smiled and greeted, "Hey, are you feeling better?"

Gu Yifeng put the flowers in the vase and took the genetic report handed to him by Chris.

"What's the result?" Her voice trembled.

Chris plopped down on the sofa. "Thanks to this accident and Gu's prompt response, although the captured gene fragment is not complete, we have made a breakthrough."

Wen Yi subconsciously looked at Gu Yifeng, who was reading a report with a serious expression.

Chris continued, "This time we only have 'fragments'. To truly understand it, dynamic whole-genome monitoring is necessary."

"How?" she asked.

Gu Yifeng took over the conversation: "When your body recovers, we will design another experiment. When your consciousness is silent, we will induce your body's survival instinct and activate your superpower gene again."

Chris nodded: "That's it, so get well soon!"

After being discharged from the hospital, Wen Yi was forbidden by Gu Yifeng to approach any source of fire because of a mistake in operating the fireplace.

"Not even the stove." His tone left no room for doubt.

From then on, Wen Yi began to live a life of "clothes to wear and food to eat" in the true sense of the word.

She wasn't used to the local cuisine of Fairfugos, so Gu Yifeng took care of all her meals. She'd expected some awful cuisine, but surprisingly, his cooking was quite impressive. He cooked both northern and southern cuisines perfectly, and even she couldn't find fault with them.

Under Gu Yifeng's scientific care, Wen Yi's complexion gradually regained its rosy complexion. He, on the other hand, had become noticeably thinner over the past few days—taking care of her daily life during the day, video-chatting with domestic projects at night, and even reviewing student papers.

What puzzled her even more was that he often went to the basement alone, tinkering with something and staying there for hours.

That night, she couldn't help but frown and asked, "Gu Yifeng, don't you need to sleep?"

Unexpectedly, there was a rare smile in his eyes: "No need to sleep, let's go, I'll take you to see the stars."

The night is as dark as ink and the starry sky is boundless.

They walked up a gentle slope, and the wind blew from the wilderness, carrying the scent of frosted pine.

"Wen Yi, don't miss the polar night in Fairfugos," he whispered in her ear. "Here, you can see the truest form of the universe."

The moment she looked up, she almost forgot to breathe. The entire starry sky suddenly spread out before her eyes. The Milky Way stretched across the sky, slowly flowing through the folds of time and space, connecting the past and the present.

The stars remained silent, as if holding their breath waiting for an answer.

Gu Yifeng took out a box from the inner pocket of his coat and slowly opened it - the faint fragrance of frosted pine drifted quietly in the night breeze.

In the box, there lies a wooden bracelet with a lace hollow pattern. The edges are polished to be round and flawless, and the hollow part is extremely intricate.

Wen Yi was stunned - how much effort would it take to carve such hard wood into something as soft as lace wrapped around the wrist?

"You did this?" She suddenly understood something and looked up. "So the wound on your hand... was caused by this?"

He didn't deny it, but gently held her hand and slowly put the bracelet on. It was the perfect size, tailor-made just for her.

"It's a local custom," he explained in a low voice. "Wearing it brings good luck."

"Look." He held her hand and held it up to the night sky. "It glows."

Starlight penetrated through the hollow space, and tiny points of light fell on her wrist, as if the entire galaxy was flowing in her hands.

"I'm sorry." He suddenly apologized to her, "In the lab... I shouldn't have yelled at you like that." He paused and asked, "Do you still blame me?"

Her eyes were slightly hot and she shook her head gently.

"I can't accept it..." His fingertips unconsciously stroked the palm of her right hand, "You are hurt because of me, and I can't do anything."

He looked up at the starry sky and sighed softly: "Yiyi, can I ask you for a favor?"

"Um?"

"In this future interdimensional battle...we might die."

"But I'm not afraid."

He looked down at the bracelet on her wrist, his Adam's apple rolling, "Wealth, status, everything I have, even my life... I can give you anything."

"I only ask you—" He closed his eyes, his eyelashes trembled, and when he opened them again, there was a glimmer in his eyes.

"If... there's a next time. Don't do it again. Leave me alone." He turned his head and stared at her, his voice hoarse as if something was blocking his throat. "Don't die in front of me, okay?"

He leaned forward slightly and held her wrist with his backhand: "Can I leave something in your life?"

"Gu Yifeng..." Wen Yi's heart couldn't help but beat faster and faster, and the word "OK" almost came out of her mouth.

She gazed into his eyes, then gazed at the vast, starry sky, and saw uncertainty about the future. Time and space were endless, but what she could achieve was truly limited. Even possessing each other became a luxury. In this life-and-death battle with an unknown outcome, could she survive? How long could she live? She couldn't be sure, but even if she couldn't win, there was one last thing she wanted to do—keep Gu Yifeng alive.

Besides, she wasn't alone. The Wen family had given birth to her and raised her. She wanted to live and die with them. It was impossible for her to easily promise a future with him like she had done before.

Finally, she just shook her head gently: "I can't promise you."

She lowered her eyes, her fingertips stroking the frosted pine bracelet on her wrist. If possible, she would always be with him. But she never easily promised things she couldn't keep, and she didn't want to lie to him.

Gu Yifeng's body stiffened and the light in his eyes suddenly went out.

Wen Yi walked past him, and just as she passed by him, he pulled her into his arms.

She was startled, and before she could react, his lips pressed down heavily on hers, as if in a desperate demand.

He kissed her deeply under the starry sky. The starlight shone down, illuminating his trembling eyelashes and reflecting the wetness in the corners of her eyes.

Wen Yi struggled instinctively, but he took away all her breath, crushing her remaining strength bit by bit, and swallowing up the words in the desperate kiss.

We are closely connected, yet we are as far apart as the sky.

She had promised him that even if fate were to reverse itself and time were to turn back, she would choose him in every future. But the truth was, fate never asked her whether she wanted to or not. In this world of mortals, her choices were completely insignificant. Time and again, just before happiness was within reach, they were forced to rewrite their fate.

My soul seemed to be split in two, one half wanted to push him away, while the other half couldn't help but want to hug him.

After a long time, he slowly let her go.

"Go back."
